WASHINGTON — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens pleaded not guilty to corruption charges Thursday and received an unusually speedy trial date, which he hopes will clear his name before voters consider re-electing him in November.

Stevens said the tentative Sept. 24 trial date set by U.S. District Judge Emmt G. Sullivan "should allow ample time for a decision before the general election" in November.

"I am looking forward to this trial as a way of finally showing the truth _ that I'm innocent," the 40-year Senate veteran said in a written statement Thursday evening.

Stevens, a Capitol Hill bulldozer accustomed to winning political battles, wrangled control of the normally sluggish judicial process. The Senate's longest-serving Republican faces a tough re-election fight and made it clear Thursday that he does not want his seven-count indictment getting in the way.

"He'd like to clear his name before the election," Stevens' attorney, Brendan Sullivan, told the judge. "This is not a complex case. It should be one that moves quickly."

The Justice Department accuses Stevens of lying on congressional disclosure documents about more than $250,000 in gifts and home renovations he received over seven years from a powerful oil field services contractor.

Prosecutors said they had no problem going t trial swiftly.

"That is absolutely fine," prosecutor Brenda K. Morris said.

Judge Sullivan said he understood "why the senator would like to have this matter commenced and concluded before the elections, and by all indications, that is possible."

Stevens, 84, also asked that the trial be moved from Washington to Alaska, where he has been a political figure since before statehood. He was named "Alaskan of the Century" in 1999 after unabashedly sending billions of dollars in federal money to the frontier state. The judge said he was not likely to send the case to Alaska.

Stevens wore a cream colored suit and a U.S. flag pin. In place of his trademark Incredible Hulk necktie _ symbolizing his temper and reputation in the Senate _ he wore a conservative blue and white tie. In court, he sat impassively and let his attorney do all the talking. He left without speaking to reporters.

Trials, especially public corruption trials, can take years to play out and seldom move this quickly. Sullivan, a $1,000-an-hour member of Washington's legal elite, said he has never asked for such a fast track.

"But I've never had a situation with a general election coming 98 days after an indictment," he said.

Some Republican lawmakers _ most notably presidential candidate Sen. John McCain _ have distanced themselves from Stevens as the GOP gears up for November. Senate Democrats, who enjoy a 51-49 majority, want to capture a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.

In Alaska, Stevens faces both Democratic and Republican challengers who are trying to capitalize on his legal woes. Democrats are counting on Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a popular figure in Alaska and a member of a well-known political family to keep Stevens from winning his seventh full term.

Stevens is accused of concealing his gifts from executives of VECO Corp., a once powerful contracting firm that used bribery and back room dealing to push favorable legislation and kill laws that were bad for the oil industry. Two executives have pleaded guilty, admitting they lavished money, gifts and campaign contributions on favored politicians and worked to keep their enemies at bay.

The former executives are cooperating with the FBI. One of them, Bill Allen, let agents tape his phone calls with the senator. The Justice Department said Thursday it has 500 gigabytes of evidence in the case, including wiretap conversations and hidden video. That's enough to fill the most powerful consumer computers on the market.

The department stopped short, however, of charging Stevens with bribery or other traditional corruption charges. Despite winning cooperation from the VECO executives and searching the senator's home, prosecutors said they could not prove a this-for-that corruption case.

Stevens was booked by U.S. marshals during a break in court. He was released on bail and is free to travel inside the U.S. He was ordered to surrender his passport. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison on each of seven counts.

His indictment is the culmination of an FBI investigation that for years has sent tremors through Alaska's political system. Several state lawmakers have been charged and others, including Stevens' son, Ben, remain under scrutiny.

If he committed a crime why aren't they charging him? They're only charging him with lying about the non crime.

Isn't it a crime for a Senator to receive merchandise or services in exchange for favors?

If they have evidence he was illegally accepting gifts why don't they charge him with illegally accepting gifts instead of lying to investigators? Seems as though if they had the goods on him they'd charge him with the actual crime and not a process crime. If not, why not?

Lets see, Brad...an oil Senator from Alaska gets $250,000 in housing upgrades from an oil contractor getting millions of dollars in business on that senator's recommendation ...and while that senator says he personally PAID for those upgrades...there is NO RECORD OF ANY PAYMENT BY HIM FOR THAT WORK!!! ...and , I guess that $200,000,000 BRIDGE TO NOWHERE that Senator Stevens tried to get through as an "earmark" makes him look like a good guy-an upstanding senator??? This freak is GUILTY!!! He'll get that pardon on Jan 19th!!!

YOU hate our freedom of speech? Hey pal, deal with this. TS is as sleazy as they come. Takes $10K from the NAB to stop the Sirius XM merger. Takes $250K for his house. They have tape of him with the VESCO CEO asking for bribes for influence.
If he were a Democrat, I would still feel the same way. Hence, the MAJOR difference between us. I do not wear rose colored glasses when it comes to either party.
The issue is that the system is corrupt and changes have to be made to begin to deal with lobbyists on K street.

No, we liberals believe in innocent until proved guilty. It's just that republicanderthals are always guilty and liberals get railroaded and have to fight corrupt republicanderthal judges to prove their innocence. Bassackwards way of doing things.

Why do these old guys keep running and why wouldn't a state prefer someone younger for gawd sakes? He's friggin 84 years old. Their age should be capped at 70 period - in the Senate and in Congress, especially the clearly corrupt ones need to goooo. That is what is wrong with this country. Narrow-minded old geezers looking out for themselves.

Imagine just how many qualified people men & women were denied that job!! Had he done more than act as a republican obstructionist for all these years denying so, so many innovative ideas to pass legislatons for the good of America and not just a few ... the country would have been better served ... and better served by a good thinking man or woman qualified.

He wants the judge to change venue from DC to Alaska ... defense witnesses are all from Alaska! Imagine the intimidation that would be at home! The judge so far seems not inclined to agree to a change of venue! Hopefully, that judge won't.

This guy has been doing business the dirty way for so long he doesn't see that it's wrong. Delusional, like most other republicons.
