Nothing says "I Love You" like blowing up an evil dictator ...

Tom Cruise's World War II movie Valkyrie - about a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler - just bagged a new release date: Feb. 13, 2009.

The pre-Valentine's Day slot follows a series of postponements for the controversial film. But Cruise's costar, Bill Nighy, insists that doesn't mean the movie is a dud.

"One of the reasons that the date was changed was in order to do ... extra scenes," the British actor told MTV News. "Valkyrie is a great story, a true story, and it's a faithful account."

As has been said, Mr. Cruise's acting over the years has been amazing. It is his personal life that worries me, but so far it looks like he has just been obnoxious, not criminal.

Any film that has Bill Nighy in it automatically gets my attention. I will wait for the NYT film review, and if it has any redeeming features at all, will probably see it, if only to tell all my friends and family what they did wrong. :)

If someone feels compelled to announce that a movie doesn't suck...it very likely sucks.

there's a definite problem with eye-patch contexts. it's tough to get the eyepatch away from pirates and nazis. if only the public could accept e-bay ready tasteful 8x10's of popular stars in eyepatches and let it go at that. everybody is interested in anybody with an eyepatch, so going further is a roll of the dice- better pirates than nazis, though.

I'm glad I know how to separate this from that and not toss the baby out with the bath water. Based on the image presented of the man's personality I haven't warmed to him on a level where I think much of the negative is false, but that alone has not in the past, and will not in the future be the deciding factor of how I view his films. I've disliked some, and love some such as the FIRM, JERRY MCQUIRE, and I won't know until I view VALKYRIE what kind of job he's done but I'll keep an open mind about it unlike some who I have a strong feeling are "pre" maligning it just because it's TC.

Maybe the movie doesn't suck.

But, the unspoken issue is that Cruise is playing a Nazi, a supposed good Nazi (was there such a thing?). The timing with the flipping out, the "glib" incident, the Dianetics, Thetan 5, Scientology, etc. are issues that keep him in the public eye. What ever happened to roles like Risky Business and Top Gun? In this movie he plays the role of a Nazi officer, a dissenter in the ranks, who plots Hitler's explosive death. Is there a secret message there? Most of the protagonist he has played are flawed in that they want to do things their way and buck the system or get around a set of established "norms." I guess this movie is a lot of the same old predictable Cruise.

This film received belabored media attention in preproduction.
Then in production. Now in postproduction which seems like
forever. Let's face it.......the story has already been dramatized
well enough.....what furthur can a remake add. NADA. In his last
book the great author and thinker Norman Mailer delt with Hitler
and German history in a more provokative way......Tom should have
this into a movie rather than this well known tragic story.

Tom is a great actor, spectacularly successful, handsome, and rich. Hagrid, do some serious thinking, look in a mirror and answer this question honestly...is it you who really sucks? If you find yourself wanting, like I expect you will, I suggest you delete your HP account and never log on again.
