Joe Klein: I Said McCain Was "Honorable," But "I Was Wrong"

A few months ago, I wrote that John McCain was an honorable man and he would run an honorable campaign. I was wrong. I used to think, as David Ignatius does, that McCain's true voice was humble and moderate, but now I'm beginning to think his Senate colleagues may be right about his temperament. From what I can gather, Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran, a Republican, reflected the views of many of his colleagues earlier this year when he said:

"The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine...He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

The erratic nature of McCain's campaign seems to be confirming that judgment.

What's most disappointing about this business is watching McCain employ the same people and tactics that were used against him in South Carolina in 2000....remember the "they have a black child" and "he's mentally unstable" whispering campaigns? I'm afraid the man drew the wrong lessons from that experience and has concluded that "if ' ya can't be 'em, join 'em."

Not that a word of the article is false, but I'm suspicious of the fact that, just yesterday, there was an article where Klein was saying that the Neo-cons were trying to get him fired.

He is starting to speak the truth either out of revenge or to try to get the reality based community to save him from the neo-cons.

We can only hope that those who previously believed in the McCain myth will have a similar 'awakening.' In my mind that's the only good that could come out of his ultra negative campaign. So as much as it's distressing to see these attacks against Obama's character, I'm almost inclined to say bring 'em on Mc.

But then I remember that the silly stuff sticks and I'm sad again.

If it's true the way a candidate runs their campaign will be the way they govern, then I sure don't want McCain.
He doesn't show respect for himself or the voters by his silly ads .
Some will fall for this crap, but the smart ones won't.

You know what impresses me about Obama the people who run his campaign REFLECTS the message that he is sending. If you hear Axelrod and Gibbs talk its almost like exactly what Obama would say. He runs a very tightly disciplined campaign. McCain on the other hand is all over the place I mean his campaign came out and say that he doesnt speak for the campaign if that isnt the most jaw dropping thing I've ever heard. The media spins this to mean that McCain is a maverick and he is being himself. So apparently he is having trouble being himself WITHIN his own campaign. WTH there is something wrong if you cant be yourself in your campaign. This isnt an acting job that you are playing a role. The next president of the US will be YOU not some part thaty you play. And I thought Hilary's campaign was badly run.

Part of the issue is that he simply confused McC 2000 with McC 2008.
