CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Barack Obama and John McCain traded old-school political jabs Thursday, with McCain contending that he had been wrongly accused of planning a racial attack and Obama countering that his opponent was inventing a controversy to avoid talking about the issues.

After months of contending that their campaigns would eschew personal attacks as part of a new kind of politics, the presumptive presidential nominees of the major parties turned nasty over what Obama meant when he said McCain and other Republicans would try to scare voters by pointing out that the Democratic candidate "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

McCain took on the role of aggrieved victim, his campaign waiting almost a day after Obama's remarks to charge that he had injected race into the presidential campaign. "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. Its divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said.

Obama, smarting from McCain's constant thumping about a first-term senator's thin resume wrapped inside a charismatic speaking style, countered that being black had nothing to do with his prediction of the nature of attacks yet to come. However, comparing his looks to those of presidents on U.S. currency _ all white men _ gave his opponents a chance to say the man who would be the first black president was subtly charging racism.

Not so, Obama's campaign said, explaining that Obama was referring only to being new to Washington politics.

"Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue, but he does believe they're using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues in this campaign, and those are the issues he'll continue to talk about," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama on Wednesday told a gymnasium full of people in Springfield, Mo., that McCain and President Bush will resort to scare tactics to maintain their hold on the White House because they have little else to offer voters.

"Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," Obama said. "You know, 'He's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name,' you know, 'He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.'"

While calling to mind the images of presidents on the nation's paper money _ George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant are on the bills most commonly used _ Obama didn't make clear what distinctions he thinks McCain is likely to raise. Besides being white, they were for the most part much older than Obama when elected.

McCain has not raised Obama's race as an issue in the campaign; he has said that Obama lacks experience.

When asked by The Associated Press what Obama meant by the comparison, Obama strategist Robert Gibbs said Thursday morning that the senator was not referring to race.

"What Barack Obama was talking about was that he didn't get here after spending decades in Washington," Gibbs said. "There is nothing more to this than the fact that he was describing that he was new to the political scene. He was referring to the fact that he didn't come into the race with the history of others. It is not about race."

Obama often makes references to his distinctions as a candidate, such as saying there are doubts among some voters because he has "a funny name." At times he refers to his race as well, saying he looks different from any previous candidate but then adding that the differences are not just about race. Addressing supporters Tuesday night at a fundraiser in Springfield, he said, "It's a leap, electing a 46-year-old black guy named Barack Obama."

Battle of Words?

Well, as long as it's not a Battle of Wits, McCain should be fine.

The One accuses McCain of running a racist campaign, and it`s McCain thats using the low road. Got it. 1984 is truly here.

Barak Obama now falling in the latest polls is once again playing the race card as he did against Senator Clinton . When this Junior Senator from Illinois does not get his way, he resorts to the Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Play Book "CRY RACISM"

Baloney! Obama did no such thing. The black community told Clinton to go home when he decided to shake his finger in our faces and denigrate Obama's campaign by referring to token candidates like Jackson and Sharpton. He was disrespectful so we handed him his hat. We don't need him acting like some"overseer" just because he rents an office in Harlem. You underestimate the political astuteness of the black community and you think our loyalty comes cheap. We know a few things about "plantation" politics and how whites like to "appoint" our "leaders" and define the playground. You are comfortable with black "token" candidates and its evident the only black leaders you know are on the TV where things are made simple and shallow and easy for you to understand. You're the one reading from a "play book" because your comment has nothing to do with reality.

this article and others like it are subliminally about race. The republicans will use many sublimenals so that we can rightfully accuse them of playing the race card. But they'll go around and say that they are not using race and we are the ones bringing it up. THey are trying to make us look like whiny race baiter's when they are the ones doing it, first and more often. But the American electorate will blame it on us (Democrats). A turn of the election on race and race related issues is bad for Barack, and Republicans know it.

Obama tried this race card tactic on the Clintons and it succeeded because they couldn't fight back. Too bad the Republicans don't play that.

If "playing the race card" = winning South Carolina, then yes, I hope he does it again!

generaldelivery: How true. It worked on the Clintons because as fellow Democrats, they had to keep their mouths shut.

But unfortunately for Obama, the nasty Republicans don't and won't.

if anyone thinks that this is NOT about race then they haven't been paying attention. Even ask Harold Ford, the RNC has been playing this game for years. Have we forgotten the New Yorker cover so soon. We have problems with race in this country. We are not so "evolved" as we claim to be. They are trying to portray Obama as different. Except they are focusing on the wrong "different". He his different because of his ideas and his manner in which he has moved millions to participate in elections.

Aren't we supposed to be inspired by our leaders? Aren't they supposed to insight hope? That's why they are called leaders. Bush (god only knows how) has inspired many in the country. McCain used to be inspiring... now I am not sure who he is anymore.
Obama is telling it like it is. How many times have you heard that Obama is the riskier choice? How many times have you heard his middle name being used? Do you know McCain's middle name? You would if it was Adolf. I'm sorry but I want to be a "fan" of my President. What's wrong with that? I've held my head in shame over this country's leadership for the past 8 years. I want to hold my head up high when referring to my President. Obama inspires many of us to do so. McCain especially with his recent remarks and campaign ads I am getting a crick in my neck already.

A question I'd like the press to ask is, "For what strategic purpose would Obama even play the race card?" What untapped demographic would he be wooing? His weakest support comes from white males, so what would such a tactic accomplish. It's obvious that the GOP hopes that appealing to fear and frustration will still help them divide our country. What a sick dynamic.

It was a ploy that he used in the primary campaign to not have discuss the issues, to stop the momentum of his opponents in the polls, and to play victim. Clinton went on Meet the Press in Jan during which she spoke about the Obama camp’s attempt to distort her comments i.e. Martin Luther King. Obama camp denied and actually blamed Clinton Supporters for having problems with Clinton's remarks.
http://embeds.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/01/13/obama-calls-clinton-allegations-ludicrous/
But then a 4 page memorandum from an Obama campaign staffer surfaced on the internet, invalidating the denial. It was published right here by Huffington Post on Jan 12, 2008. The memo was written by South Carolina Press Secretary, Amaya Smith. The Obama camp did not return repeated requests for comment on the Huffington Post article. Senator Obama and his campaign are liars and should be treated as such.

Its the old "if you repeat it enough times it becomes true tactic" and it works{for the dummies which are about 50% of the public}.

This is Obama's statement.
"This is a race about big challenges -- a slumping economy, a broken foreign policy, and an energy crisis for everyone but the oil companies. Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue, but he does believe they're using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues in this campaign, and those are the issues he'll continue to talk about."
Did you see the part where it says, Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue?
Tell me again how this issue got started? Does it matter if you don't know why Obama would play the race card? All that matters is if he did. If he did, it needs to stop. I would suggest waiting for the McCain camp to say or do something racist, before you try and label them that way. This takes away from real race issues.

Does Obama really believe that we are that stupid? New to Washington?? How much more insulting & condescending can he get?
I am really starting NOT to like this guy. FISA, faith-based - I am having a big problem with what he is doing.

McCain strategy for reverse "racism" is an acceptable brand of racism frequently used by consevative (neo-fascist) media critics like Pat Buchanan, Tucker Carlson, etc. (I wonders what allows them to be media critics?), and that is the reason why this story has been given such a leg. Why does it matter, and to whom does it matter, what idiotic thing the Republican henchman Rick Davis has to say? Why report such utter travesty? That it is beyond any irony that in a country like America a black man will be charged with playing the race card by those who have consistently supported racists and racism in our society is not a surprise. Give it to the corporate media lackeys like Wolf Blitzer and Fox News to legitimize the attacks on the victim of racism for raising his voice. Obama is racist, according to these racists, because he has the temerity to innoculate himself agaisnt racist attacks. Is the black man a racist; is the jew the antisemite (as in the case of Joe Klein)? This kind of nonsense can only be legitimized by American media whose self interest it serves.

I must admit. the Repubs are good. They are duping the American people in to voting for another one of their candidates using the same tactics they used in the past. The American People have short memories. Here we go again, another 8 years.

The media is pushing this race thing on behalf of the McCain people. Look at the situation, there is a ton of misinformation out there about Barrack Obama. Who is putting out the lies, that would would be who Obama referred to as "THEY". Bush never made a commercial SWIFTBOATING John Kerry, but he didn't dissuade it or ask the media to stop talking about it. So for Bush "THEY" were successful in spreading lies.

Obama said "THEY" would make an issue out of him personally and not about the issues he stands for. McCain's camp is being disingenious they claimed Obama is playing the race card, when they could have just as easily have said. "We don't know what Obama is talking about, but we in this campaign will not be resorting to personal attacks and that includes anything referring to Obama's ethnic background. We can not control what other groups do, that is tne nature of politics and if Obama can't take it maybe he is not ready to lead the country."

The media is not challenging the McCain campaign on this issue, and subtly the are implying that this issue is Obama's fault. There is no false information being spread about John McCain in the media or online, so there are no issues for McCain to refute.

The media is biased against Democrats
