CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Barack Obama and John McCain traded old-school political jabs Thursday, with McCain contending that he had been wrongly accused of planning a racial attack and Obama countering that his opponent was inventing a controversy to avoid talking about the issues.

After months of contending that their campaigns would eschew personal attacks as part of a new kind of politics, the presumptive presidential nominees of the major parties turned nasty over what Obama meant when he said McCain and other Republicans would try to scare voters by pointing out that the Democratic candidate "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

McCain took on the role of aggrieved victim, his campaign waiting almost a day after Obama's remarks to charge that he had injected race into the presidential campaign. "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. Its divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said.

Obama, smarting from McCain's constant thumping about a first-term senator's thin resume wrapped inside a charismatic speaking style, countered that being black had nothing to do with his prediction of the nature of attacks yet to come. However, comparing his looks to those of presidents on U.S. currency _ all white men _ gave his opponents a chance to say the man who would be the first black president was subtly charging racism.

Not so, Obama's campaign said, explaining that Obama was referring only to being new to Washington politics.

"Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue, but he does believe they're using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues in this campaign, and those are the issues he'll continue to talk about," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama on Wednesday told a gymnasium full of people in Springfield, Mo., that McCain and President Bush will resort to scare tactics to maintain their hold on the White House because they have little else to offer voters.

"Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," Obama said. "You know, 'He's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name,' you know, 'He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.'"

While calling to mind the images of presidents on the nation's paper money _ George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant are on the bills most commonly used _ Obama didn't make clear what distinctions he thinks McCain is likely to raise. Besides being white, they were for the most part much older than Obama when elected.

McCain has not raised Obama's race as an issue in the campaign; he has said that Obama lacks experience.

When asked by The Associated Press what Obama meant by the comparison, Obama strategist Robert Gibbs said Thursday morning that the senator was not referring to race.

"What Barack Obama was talking about was that he didn't get here after spending decades in Washington," Gibbs said. "There is nothing more to this than the fact that he was describing that he was new to the political scene. He was referring to the fact that he didn't come into the race with the history of others. It is not about race."

Obama often makes references to his distinctions as a candidate, such as saying there are doubts among some voters because he has "a funny name." At times he refers to his race as well, saying he looks different from any previous candidate but then adding that the differences are not just about race. Addressing supporters Tuesday night at a fundraiser in Springfield, he said, "It's a leap, electing a 46-year-old black guy named Barack Obama."

Obama is black - there is nothing he can do about but he can insert references to address the following: http://www.jedreport.com/2008/08/setting-the-rec.html

So there is a difference schoolmaster.

The term "race card" is so offensive. Racism is still alive and well in this country, and to compare the pain this causes to a card game trivializes the harsh realties that shape the lives of millions, thereby sweeping all meaningful discussion under the rug.

VERY WELL SAID!!

and accusing people of playing the "race card" is a classic cover that is employed by racists (aka republicans)

Beware: Ridiculous comment above (appacom)

"get over it"

I've never heard these words uttered by anyone but those lounging in the sunrays of White Privilege.

Smallpox blankets? Get over it.
Slavery and Jim Crow? Get over it.
Internment camps? Get over it.

You them CarolinaObserver! After all, congress has already apologized for slavery and Jim Crow laws. What more do "those people" want? If they only understood what "we" go through for "them"! I guess that's whiteman's burden!

All should check their history books.

- The Republican party was founded in 1851 as the Anti-slavery party, eventually issuing the Emancipation Proclaimation. Abraham Lincoln (R).
- The democratic party was the Pro-slavery party.

This was a race card. How else can it be explained? I wish both of these clowns we have to choose from would stick to issues. We won't see a debate for months and there are only three of them. That's all we get. Until then, garbage like this issue & McCain's stupid commerial is the best we're going to get.

Obama brought it up, Obama accuses anyone of having doubts about his ability of beinf spooked because he does not look like a white guy.

Obama has played the race card loud and clear. I want to vote for this guy but every day, he gives me more reasons to vote for McCain.

The racist buttons sold at the Texas GOP Convention
The t-shirts with a cartoon monkey representing Sen. Obama"
The GOP commercial that says, "He's just to different"
The well coordinated Spam "he's a Muslim" emails
The Michelle Obama is a racist lie
The "He hates his white grandmother" lie

All GOP spin, all using race to attack and all repeated by every redneck with a computer....their YouTube videos would turn the stomachs of any decent American; lies, anger, hate & Union Jacks, but that's ok according to you.

Yet, you really think Sen. Obama is being racist by merely warning people that these types of attacks will continue?

Think about it....pull your thumb out of your rear end for just 2 seconds...
"I don't look like the other Presidents on the dollar bills"
compared to...
"Can we still call it the WHITE House?"

Now look in a mirror and say that it's all Sen Obama's fault....you'll be looking at a fool & liar.

I'm very sick of the GOP right now...even McCain(who I once respected and voted for)....one lie after another. They have no honor.

Now they've convinced a lot of good people into repeating their lies. Rove's sins have become the sins of others.

Maybe seven years of lies wasn't enough for some of you. You'd rather be lied to & cheated by a white person, than be told the truth from someone with brown skin. Only you know why....spare us the BS excuses.

A black man Makes the statement that he "does not look like the other president"S" on dollar bills. ( there is only one president on our dollar bills. If Mccain made that statement the left would be all over his senility.} However, coming from a black man we are asked to suspend all reality and believe he was referring to his age, his lack of experience, his shoe size, anything but race. I'm not an Obama supporter, but I gave him more credit then to stoop this low, and then play the public for such fools. And some advice for his supporters who still continue to make up cute names for Mccain. You come across as EXTREMELY immature.

It's racist reversalism, the likes that invented the term reverse racism. This tactic was invented by the Ku Klux Klan in the late 60s to counteract the new Civil Rights Acts.

Thank you.

They should be forced to write "Race Card" in quotes if they are going to continue to use it.

After nearly 10 years of George Bush (that includes his campaigns) I am yearning for the day that education and meaningful discourse returns to governance.

If we had assaulted those that actually attacked the US, (including the Oil Co insurgency) in the same manner in which Bush and McCain assault the English language daily - we would have secure borders and 1.25 a gal gasoline.

I am so sick of the way McCain's campaign in playing to the negativity on people. Obama is just trying to make it about him and his policies. I believe in that and thiink that in the end - if negativity works then just like the last four years - we get what we deserve. I try to push back on the negativity I see in the media by sending notes and e-mailing the MSM . I don't watch network tv anymore because I can't stomach the attacks!
We need to stand against this stuff so the campaigns don't even go there - they must be unsuccessful - we should force them to really just discuss the policies!
It's up to us - the American people voted Bush in the second time and we were buried for it!
Let's stand up and make this country better a president won't do it!

AMEN! Left, Right, Blue State, Red State, Toss-up State! The MSM has no end of "labels" they attach to all of us. When asked for my party affiliation, I told a pollster I was a member of the "Free Thinkers!" He was shocked! (btw: Whatever happened to free-thinking in this country?) This voter is white and pro-Obama! Let's get on with it!

McCain is probably doing well because 1) People know and trust him from 25 years in the Senate and 2) Most of America still believes in conservative values and Obama is far left

this duplicitous old fool is not the mccain i so admired a few years ago. i don't know if it's his age, i don't know if the deal he made with the devil is beginning to wear him out. but one thing i do know, and that is that he does NOT speak for his campaign. so who does?
who exactly would we be electing? arianna was right, he is a trojan horse. God help us if the repugs regain power.

LOL the same conservative values that gave us the worse president in history.

Americans agree with Democrats on 90% of the issues. Rethuglicans have thrown most of their "conservative" values under the bus fiscal responsibility, small government and humble foreign policy.

Didn't read the recent NYT article, MPCarr, about where America stands ideologically, did you? They called it America's move to the middle, but when you read America's opinions on issues, its stances were left of middle.

But why ruin a good story with the facts?

Mccain is losing, no matter what the polls say. Therefore, his camp must play the race card, to distract voters from the real issues. His plans are equal to Bush plans. Today G M loss 15 billion, Big oil profit 12 billion, enough said. Mccain is about the same old politics. It is time for a change. Obama birthday aug 4, donate, donate, donate. I love how if you don't come right out and call someone a slur, then you can't POSSIBLY be playing on racial subtleties.

I know what "presumptuous" means. I know what justaposing 2 white girls against Obama means, rather than Will Smith and Kanye West.

Stop. Seriously.

McCain did not play the race card--Obama did. And CLinton did too in the primary.

The presidential race is really tied, as expected. Nobody knows who will win.

I heard an interesting statistic that historically a candidate who is ahead in the Gallup poll at this point in time does not go on to win the election

John McCain’s campaign has descended to the ninth level negative attack-ad purgatory because he abandoned principled positions on issues that made him unique and appealing. And now he has nothing positive to say. He can’t tout actions he took during his senate career on campaign finance reform, torture, or religious intolerance because he sold out to far-right fundamentalists and big business. When he woke up to the fact that he couldn’t remain a true maverick and command enough support from his party to be elected, he dumped his principles and went shopping for endorsements.

But he was not a careful shopper. In his haste to garner approval from right wing, mega-church religious leaders, people he used to call the “agents of intolerance” he ignored the repugnant preaching’s of wing-nut reverends including John Hagee and Ron Parsley who advocates the destruction of Islam.

Had he not turned his back on the principled positions he took on campaign finance reform, offshore drilling, protecting the environment and tragically torture, he would have material for many positive campaign ads. John McCain is a desperate candidate so immersed in failed ideology it’s no wonder he can’t think. But maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that a man so addicted to war would think he can bomb his way to the presidency with attack ads.
