CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Barack Obama and John McCain traded old-school political jabs Thursday, with McCain contending that he had been wrongly accused of planning a racial attack and Obama countering that his opponent was inventing a controversy to avoid talking about the issues.

After months of contending that their campaigns would eschew personal attacks as part of a new kind of politics, the presumptive presidential nominees of the major parties turned nasty over what Obama meant when he said McCain and other Republicans would try to scare voters by pointing out that the Democratic candidate "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

McCain took on the role of aggrieved victim, his campaign waiting almost a day after Obama's remarks to charge that he had injected race into the presidential campaign. "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. Its divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said.

Obama, smarting from McCain's constant thumping about a first-term senator's thin resume wrapped inside a charismatic speaking style, countered that being black had nothing to do with his prediction of the nature of attacks yet to come. However, comparing his looks to those of presidents on U.S. currency _ all white men _ gave his opponents a chance to say the man who would be the first black president was subtly charging racism.

Not so, Obama's campaign said, explaining that Obama was referring only to being new to Washington politics.

"Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue, but he does believe they're using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues in this campaign, and those are the issues he'll continue to talk about," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama on Wednesday told a gymnasium full of people in Springfield, Mo., that McCain and President Bush will resort to scare tactics to maintain their hold on the White House because they have little else to offer voters.

"Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," Obama said. "You know, 'He's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name,' you know, 'He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.'"

While calling to mind the images of presidents on the nation's paper money _ George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant are on the bills most commonly used _ Obama didn't make clear what distinctions he thinks McCain is likely to raise. Besides being white, they were for the most part much older than Obama when elected.

McCain has not raised Obama's race as an issue in the campaign; he has said that Obama lacks experience.

When asked by The Associated Press what Obama meant by the comparison, Obama strategist Robert Gibbs said Thursday morning that the senator was not referring to race.

"What Barack Obama was talking about was that he didn't get here after spending decades in Washington," Gibbs said. "There is nothing more to this than the fact that he was describing that he was new to the political scene. He was referring to the fact that he didn't come into the race with the history of others. It is not about race."

Obama often makes references to his distinctions as a candidate, such as saying there are doubts among some voters because he has "a funny name." At times he refers to his race as well, saying he looks different from any previous candidate but then adding that the differences are not just about race. Addressing supporters Tuesday night at a fundraiser in Springfield, he said, "It's a leap, electing a 46-year-old black guy named Barack Obama."

How many more elections cycles like this do we have to endure, how many more incompetent persons do we have to elect and how many more years must we watch this country slip deeper and deeper into crises because the media helps the candidates to promote these kind of distractions?

Lastly, when are the American people going to unanimously say.... ENOUGH !

These are Rovian tactics, folks. You can see his hand in this. Making sure Obama doesn't get to address the fears of whites in this country about electing a black man to the office. And we KNOW these fears exist--whether people admit to them or not. McCain's accusation of 'the race card' is just a way to silence Obama on what needs to be done to win. And we all KNOW it. Meanwhile right wing talk radio and Fox News run stories about scary rap music designed to whip up fears of whites. And McCain gets to pretend it's not HIM benefiting from it.

You are being scammed again, folks. Just like the last 2 times.

There is nothing Rovian about any of this. The simple fact is that the more people see of Obama, the less they like him. He's arrogant, condescending and can NEVER admit he is wrong. Period!

I'll try this again because it seems to have gotten lost.

While the MSM was distracting itself as usual by parroting McCain's campaign histrionics, they missed the fact that Big Oil contributed more than a million bucks to Mr. McCain as soon as he flip flopped for off-shore drilling. If I'm not mistaken, it was only mentioned by Jack Cafferty and by Obama himself. Had it been the other way around, that Obama had been given that money, we'd still be hearing it over and over again by the same so called objective media.

You can tell the primaries are over. McCain is a 25 year veteran of the Senate and is an old political dog. But he still has teeth and if BO thinks he will just roll over, I think he will discover the old dog still has some fight. Old Mac may lose, but he will fight.

Funny thing is, as an old guy McCain will probably get a pass for being a bit stern. Barack must stay on his script. If he gets outside his comfort zone he will look young and emotional.

McCain is known to all of the american people [with all his flaws and faults] so there isn't much BO can say about him that will be a surprise.

I'm about to scream. Obama is on his way to losing this election. He's doing the same as Kerry and those before him by trying to focus on the positive and not attacking. All his respect and positivity will get him the same result as those before him. Negativity works. He is talking about himself, instead of constantly talking about all the reasons why McCain is wrong with example after example. He should be running ads belittling McCain for playing politics while people can't put food on the table and show all the things he'll do to make Americans' lives better and McCain's proposals are the same as Bush's. He just shrugs off McCain attacks with one joking line, and ignores it. LOOK AT THE POLLS, PEOPLE! NEGATIVE ATTACKS WORK! OBAMA IS GOING TO LOSE THIS SLAM DUNK ELECTION IF HE DOESN'T GO ON ATTACK! Dems need to stop taking the damn high road and get down in the mud and win a freakin campaign for a change!

Obama is a new, different kind of politician. He will unite us. He doesn't want to participate in the divisive politics of the past.

"Obama is a new, different kind of politician. He will unite us. He doesn't want to participate in the divisive politics of the past."

Missy53 is 100% correct. BTW, Obama is not doing anything new. Adlai Stevenson, John Kerry and Dukakis tried the same tactic. Silly liberal Dems are going to give us another Glorious Loser and they will be saying again,"Well, we won a moral victory at least". It's time for Democrats to stop bringing a knife to a gunfight. I'm tired of this idealistic prattle. Take off the rose-colored glasses and start being pragmatic.

Obama will lose if he initiates or responds to race baiting. He spends a lot of time saying we need to talk about the issues instead of x,y,z stupid topic. The Republicans have screwed up so bad, worse then Nixon IMO, this should be a walk in the park. That McCain is still close is a red flag on Obama's campaign. Obama beat Hillary (not easily) by positioning himself as the change candidate. He needs to freshen himself up for the GE and he is struggling to do that. He is coming across as repetitive.

The Obama camp needs to step out of the gutter and deliver a sound blow to McCain.

The Low Road Ad and messaging does not go far enough to slap McCain back and position Barack as the one best ready to lead the country. McCain's behavior has been so erratic that even republicans are questioning his behavior.

However, thus far we are not taking advantage of it. In fact, the Low Road ad sounds like the highbrow approach that Kerry took in 2004. Although it resonates with the base it does not connect with the average American.

My suggestion is an ad that squarely hits McCain on his supposed strength, his readiness to lead.

I envision the ad, 'Who's Ready To Lead' that flows as follows:

While Obama met with world leaders to start rebuilding America’s global partnerships decimated over the last eight years, John McCain spent the week attacking Obama and telling falsehoods.

While Obama met with the country's top economic minds to bring economic relief for Americans, John McCain spent the week working on discredited ads about Paris Hilton and Britney.

While Obama put forward sound energy policies to give working Americans relief from oil prices, McCain was once again promoting Bush's agenda for big oil companies.

McCain has opened the door we fail if we let it close without hitting him hard but while remaining positive. There is just too much material out there even from republicans that worry about his positions.

Now is the time!

1) Most Americans don't relate to Obama's "global citizen" mentality. They don't want a socialist, European government in America.

2)Obama's energy policy is "inflating your tires." Believe me, you will be hearing alot about this going forward.

Race? What's that? Thought Obama was comparing himself to other presidents who's been long in the political field before running and yes, his name is different.
Obama even laughs at himself when he tells jokes about being nominated as a black guy.

Where's Mccain got that racial notion? Isn't he aware that there is only one race on earth and that's the human race- and/or maybe he's talking about the presidential race? Then what's wrong if Obama uses it? Aren't they running a preseidential race?
I don't even want to believe that McCain, whom I greatly respect , an honorable statesman and war hero can think in such low terms and especially as he's a presidential candidate. If he means race as in racial, then I am beyond words.

I may be wrong . I hope he meant race as in running a race.

This is such a weak argument. Come on, you know what he was saying.

washington was 57 when inaugurated, lincoln was 52. Are these the "old men" barrack and you are referring to?

You know, it's okay to say he just slipped up and went over the line in his rhetoric. You don't need to excuse everything he says. You can still vote for him.

I hadn't heard that. Give source of McCain wanting to dump Affirmative-Action?

BTW, I like Obama's view of Affirmative-Action (see last Monday's Chicago Sun-Times)...Obama does NOT want Affirmative-Action to be according to race and gender. He prefers 'need'. He said, "A wealthier African-American does NOT deserve more opportunities then a poorer white."...He said at the UNITY convention in Chicago over the weekend.

Obama badly deserved to be called out on this. This repeated prediction of a race attack John McCain would never make is clearly calculated to do two things. (1) Obama hopes to silence all criticism of him by equating any criticism with a racial attack. (2) Obama is trying to inflame the black communities in Detroit, Philly, Pittsburgh, Cinci, and Cleveland to turnout i larger numbers in order to put the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, in greater play. But all Obama is going to accomplish with his race card playing will be to inflame and resurrect the affirmative action despising white Reagan Democrats in those states and turn them into McCain Democrats, The chickens are at long last coming home to roost for American's first affirmative action presidential candidate.

I've heard more than a few characterizations recently accusing Obama of being "arrogant". The man impresses me as being respectful and humble, so the arrogance talking point is no more than code for "uppity". Actually, I can't wait for their next outrageous attack ad. They're just burying McCain with this stuff. And not a moment too soon.

When Obama sai "I" instead of 'We" in his speech in Europe where he said "I am the change people are looking for," he cemented the arrogant charge.

How would it possibly help O to play the race card. Is race (AA) suppose to be a positive asset in American society. I am sure that the last thing O would want to bring up is RACE. McCain is grasping for straws and basing his whole campaign on attacking O. Of course the pathetic so called media is willing to aid and abet McCain in his rovian tactics.

I have one thing to say to McCain, the media, and his motly crew, "NOT THIS TIME!"

***"Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," Obama explained. "You know, he's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name, you know, he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."***

Here's a comment from an article at Real Clear Politics:

"We know this is just a prefabricated attack, because last month in Florida, Obama brandished a similar, less opaque, comment, saying, "They're going to try to make you afraid. They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?"

It's true; Obama is black. And the person who keeps mentioning that Barack Obama is black most often is Barack Obama.

In fact, Obama has preemptively accused the entire McCain campaign of racism and the entire electorate of being susceptible to racism." (End of quote)

Here's the link to the article: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/08/negative_ads_and_the_race_card.html

Sorry to all Obama supporters, I am one, but I am starting to wonder if there is not some truth in the above. Hope not.

Why in the hell can't we have an objective discussion about whether McCain is a war hero or not? If your definition of a hero is one who fought, and endured horrific treatment as a POW, then McCain surely fits the bill. But, if you are like me, one who grew up in the shadow of WWII vets in the late 50's and early 60's, ones who won medals for valor, and endured combat operations in Europe and Asia, or one whose boyhood friends fought in Viet Nam, (unlike me) then he fails. In my humble opinion, he was a fighter jock who dropped bombs on people, who then got shot down, and was subject to 'harsh interrogation methods'. And, he had plenty of company. And please, don't give me this tired old bullshit about he could have come home early when the North Vietnamese found out he was the son of an admiral. Yeah right. If he had done that, he would not be a senator now. He could never have taken that offer. On one side, give the guy a break. He is an American, and surely loves his country. On the other, he is a war monger, in bed with lobbyists and corporations, whose election would essentially be four more years of Bush. And, if McCain can attack Obama's patriotism, then Obama can ask for an examination of just what the hell makes McCain a war hero.

This is a losing argument for Democrats. It just amplifies Obama and the left's dislike for the military. Furthermore McCain has never used his military service as a reason to vote for him.

Wesley Clark tried this, and failed miserably.
