CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Barack Obama and John McCain traded old-school political jabs Thursday, with McCain contending that he had been wrongly accused of planning a racial attack and Obama countering that his opponent was inventing a controversy to avoid talking about the issues.

After months of contending that their campaigns would eschew personal attacks as part of a new kind of politics, the presumptive presidential nominees of the major parties turned nasty over what Obama meant when he said McCain and other Republicans would try to scare voters by pointing out that the Democratic candidate "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

McCain took on the role of aggrieved victim, his campaign waiting almost a day after Obama's remarks to charge that he had injected race into the presidential campaign. "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. Its divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said.

Obama, smarting from McCain's constant thumping about a first-term senator's thin resume wrapped inside a charismatic speaking style, countered that being black had nothing to do with his prediction of the nature of attacks yet to come. However, comparing his looks to those of presidents on U.S. currency _ all white men _ gave his opponents a chance to say the man who would be the first black president was subtly charging racism.

Not so, Obama's campaign said, explaining that Obama was referring only to being new to Washington politics.

"Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue, but he does believe they're using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues in this campaign, and those are the issues he'll continue to talk about," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama on Wednesday told a gymnasium full of people in Springfield, Mo., that McCain and President Bush will resort to scare tactics to maintain their hold on the White House because they have little else to offer voters.

"Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," Obama said. "You know, 'He's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name,' you know, 'He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.'"

While calling to mind the images of presidents on the nation's paper money _ George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant are on the bills most commonly used _ Obama didn't make clear what distinctions he thinks McCain is likely to raise. Besides being white, they were for the most part much older than Obama when elected.

McCain has not raised Obama's race as an issue in the campaign; he has said that Obama lacks experience.

When asked by The Associated Press what Obama meant by the comparison, Obama strategist Robert Gibbs said Thursday morning that the senator was not referring to race.

"What Barack Obama was talking about was that he didn't get here after spending decades in Washington," Gibbs said. "There is nothing more to this than the fact that he was describing that he was new to the political scene. He was referring to the fact that he didn't come into the race with the history of others. It is not about race."

Obama often makes references to his distinctions as a candidate, such as saying there are doubts among some voters because he has "a funny name." At times he refers to his race as well, saying he looks different from any previous candidate but then adding that the differences are not just about race. Addressing supporters Tuesday night at a fundraiser in Springfield, he said, "It's a leap, electing a 46-year-old black guy named Barack Obama."

Obama: "be prepared, McCain is going to play really, really, dirty."

McCain: "How dare Obama accuse me of playing dirty! I am outraged and incensed that he would say such a dirty, rotten thing about me! This proves that you should vote for me, and not him!"

Hey, McCain, we've had 8 years of dirty tricks from your side of the political spectrum. We are tired of it. If you can't say something constructive, why don't you just be quiet? Come to think of it, silence from you, Bush, and Cheney would be a real improvement!

The Rethuglican base hates McBush so he is trying to use everything negative to make them hate Obama more. The press loves the narrative that this is an election that is a referendum on Obama. But in reality this election is a referendum on the American people.

-Are the American people going to fall for negative campaigning over an issues based campaign?
-Are the American people going to reward the Republicans for 8 years of disastrous economic and foreign policies?
-Are the American people going to vote against their self interests once again? When the majority of Americans agree with Democrats on 90% of the issues.
-Have the American people bridged the ethnic divide like they say they have which had held us back for so many decades?
-Do the American people really want an administration that does not want to increase executive power and uphold the constitution?
-Do the American people want competent government or do they want cronies and lobbyists to run government?

If America votes for McBush this year we failed as a society just as badly as the Republicans have for 8 years.

exactly, and the whole world will be watching. I for one, don't want another "How Could x number of Americans Be So Stupid" headline.

To me, if we re-elect the GOP, it will mark the beginning of our decline. And I don't want to be the generation that presides over a decline. You people had better get your $hlt and vote on the issues.

I wonder what JM's excuse would be if Obama was a white blond-haired guy named ... Tom Smith perhaps then he'd focus on the real issues!

I still believe however, that McCain should bring it all on; this battle is between old and new and old is not going down without a fight. So Barack, dust your heels, ready yourself, and put us out of our misery. America awaits.

God's Speed!

All Political Parties have vested interests; Politicians have to work with those vested interests if they want to get ahead in their parties. I'm not surprised by Mc's behavior, it's expected of him by his masters.
The Repugs HAVE to resort to negative tactics if they are to salvage something out of the coming election, they know this is not their year. Negative tactics work with the bigotted and uninformed.
Race WILL be an issue, Barack is half Black.
This election will be a test of the American Electorate, they have a pretty good idea of how bad things are; we'll find out if they're up to the challenge in November.
If they pass the test, we'll all celebrate; if not, the Country's decline will be unstopable.

Will the dim-witted gullible people who voted for Bush in '00 and '04 fall for McCain's lies and red-herrings and re-elect Bush for a third term? I fear it will come to pass. The media is still supinely stenographic, and of course controlled by self-interested corporate America, the electorate is still over-worked and under-discerning and the swift-boating, amoral, unethical sociopathic neocons are going full bore.

Obama needs to scream his message out loud and clear while he's being pummeled and ignored but it feels like his voice is too weak and his argument too nuanced to reach the masses. But maybe it's just me, I'm scared of a President Bush McCain, really scared.

Another freaking hissy fit from excitable conservatives. He says the dollar bill line all the time.

Enough already. We're all sick of your faux outrage.

Maybe they'll perp walk another weeping GOP Senator tomorrow, and the Right can give us another lecture on "honor".

What you call the race card, I call the dismiss card. White middle class people, of whom I am one of, who do not want to deal with the "issues" that people of color have, tritely state, "they are playing the race card!" Call it what it is--the dismiss card. It is very much like white folks, of which I am one, stating that, "I don't see color!" What they do not realize is that, IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO NOT SEE COLOR!! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WHEN YOU ARE WHITE. If you think that the media is treating Obama the same way they are treating McCain, just ask yourself how the msm would have reacted if Obama would have mixed up the Sunni and Shia of Iraq. America, you are in denial. Yeah, it is a pain in the arse to accept the fact that there are uneducated, racist, and utterly unfair individuals in our country. Just because YOU ARE NOT A TARGET OF THEIR HATRED DOES NOT MEAN IT DOES NOT EXIST!!

John McCain came home from his POW years in N. Vietnam, only to find that his lovely first wife had been crippled in a car accident. He soon found a replacement, second wife, Cindy, a Budweiser beer heiress who just happened to be worth over a $100 million dollars.

Coincidence? I think not.

As if John McCain hasn't played the "prisoner of war" card ad nauseam. We are supposed to respect his war service and let him get away with murder because of it. The MSM has sheltered him a lot, but when they have had enough, and some of the tapes of his liaisons with lobbyists--especially those who work for law firms who aren't lobbyists--surface, his reputation as maverick may take on a new light. But then, there are those who watch Fixed News who wouldn't believe McCain's relationships if you showed them footage.
