CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Barack Obama and John McCain traded old-school political jabs Thursday, with McCain contending that he had been wrongly accused of planning a racial attack and Obama countering that his opponent was inventing a controversy to avoid talking about the issues.

After months of contending that their campaigns would eschew personal attacks as part of a new kind of politics, the presumptive presidential nominees of the major parties turned nasty over what Obama meant when he said McCain and other Republicans would try to scare voters by pointing out that the Democratic candidate "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

McCain took on the role of aggrieved victim, his campaign waiting almost a day after Obama's remarks to charge that he had injected race into the presidential campaign. "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. Its divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said.

Obama, smarting from McCain's constant thumping about a first-term senator's thin resume wrapped inside a charismatic speaking style, countered that being black had nothing to do with his prediction of the nature of attacks yet to come. However, comparing his looks to those of presidents on U.S. currency _ all white men _ gave his opponents a chance to say the man who would be the first black president was subtly charging racism.

Not so, Obama's campaign said, explaining that Obama was referring only to being new to Washington politics.

"Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue, but he does believe they're using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues in this campaign, and those are the issues he'll continue to talk about," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama on Wednesday told a gymnasium full of people in Springfield, Mo., that McCain and President Bush will resort to scare tactics to maintain their hold on the White House because they have little else to offer voters.

"Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," Obama said. "You know, 'He's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name,' you know, 'He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.'"

Story continues below

While calling to mind the images of presidents on the nation's paper money _ George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant are on the bills most commonly used _ Obama didn't make clear what distinctions he thinks McCain is likely to raise. Besides being white, they were for the most part much older than Obama when elected.

McCain has not raised Obama's race as an issue in the campaign; he has said that Obama lacks experience.

When asked by The Associated Press what Obama meant by the comparison, Obama strategist Robert Gibbs said Thursday morning that the senator was not referring to race.

"What Barack Obama was talking about was that he didn't get here after spending decades in Washington," Gibbs said. "There is nothing more to this than the fact that he was describing that he was new to the political scene. He was referring to the fact that he didn't come into the race with the history of others. It is not about race."

Obama often makes references to his distinctions as a candidate, such as saying there are doubts among some voters because he has "a funny name." At times he refers to his race as well, saying he looks different from any previous candidate but then adding that the differences are not just about race. Addressing supporters Tuesday night at a fundraiser in Springfield, he said, "It's a leap, electing a 46-year-old black guy named Barack Obama."

When you intend to attack or provoke, putting images of 2 young white girls just beside a black in a strategy of battle =race card....
As someone stated earlier here, "risky"="watch out, it would be the first time that the Nation would be "conducted" by a Black...Are you really willing to try that?
Millions of young whites ("represented" by 2 blondes who have nearly lost everything )want this man to lead the country...You,as parents , who already know that rock stars are so dangerous ,you better stop
this madness...We can't afford to let our young white women vote for the Black guy just because they fall in love with him...it's too...risky!!!!"
We ALL know that the Republicans Looooooooooove smear attacks, it's their trademark...All the sudden they are shocked because someone revealed their tactic...

McCain has been making personal attacks for months. Now he cries boo hoo when Obama finally calls him on it?

Don't get any of those salty tears on your shoes, John.

I am glad you are too young to vote. Tell daddy his candidate is a loser. Tell your mom ... about 8 pm.

This is the closest thing to the GOD'S HONEST TRUTH I've seen yet. (from the folks at TPM):

The Sinking of John McCain's Swiftboat

If there had been a tip jar, I would have dropped a twenty in it just for this one clip.

Here's what McCain is trying to distract you from:

and this from August, 2007:

Because McCain cannot offer CHANGE, he wants to take away your HOPE.

Can we HOPE (and vote) for CHANGE anyway? Yes, we can.

Those are the only cards he has to play at this time. If he play his Tony Rezko car, then the O camp plays the Keating 5 card. And so on, and so on. This really could get interesting. I think they feel that this kind of stuff will rattle O, but they will have to rethink their strategy. It will not work with the America I know.

Would we not want our President to be liked and respected abroad, instead of being burned in effigy? Would we want a person that has a swagger because he has something to swag. How about a healthy and athlete president for a change. Could that not encourage the nation to follow his lead? How about an intelligent Pres that encourages and inspires children to stay in school. It could only be something dreams and hard work is made of.

It could also reasure single parents that struggle to encourage their children to be all they can be. Now what's so bad about that? It could happen, in fact a lot of people have changed their eating habits because of him, and more and more students are probably applying to Harvard and other Ivy league schools (Black and White). People influence other people.

Continue to play cards JMcShame and O will continue to inspire.

Wouldn't it be great if we could trade politicians like baseball players? Alot of them are in the same salary range.

This is easy. McCain crossed the line with his Britney/Paris add. Juxtaposing those two with Obama is just a subtle appeal to white males. Check this out, this black dude is chasing 'our' women! You can't vote for that! So Obama subtly replies - "I don't look like these guys on our currency... so what are you afraid of?" Now McCain has his opening to accuse the Obama camp of playing the Race Card... but we all know where it started. Republicans are all about fear. I was a Republican before the party decided that ignorance and bigotry were no longer subtle themes to play, but should instead describe the core constituency. Now I'm an Independent. I don't like Democratic party fiscal policy so much, but frankly the Republican fiscal policy has been rather disastrous on it's own, though this is the only area I give some props to McCain. However, the more I see of McCain, the less I think of him. He's flipped on every important issue except campaign finance reform, but he's played that fast and loose also. Now this. Obama has intellect, depth, discipline. Obama 2008!

Hey, speaking of all them dead white guys on our money, Ben Franklin is on the hundred dollar bill, and he wasn't ever a president.

If the feds can find the money to constantly---and I mean CONSTANTLY---change the appearance of our money, they can surely put, say, the images of Martin Luther King, Jr, Cesar Chavez, even the teacher killed in the Challenger space shuttle explosion, Christa McAuliffe, on our money, too.

So much for McCain's promise " to run a clean, respectful campaign, focussed on important issues". When will the Media wake up to the fact that the John McCain of 2000 no longer exists ? This new guy is a Bush Republican. McCain has employed several Karl Rove's acolytes - these are the same scumbags that said that McCain had fathered an illegitimate black child during the 2000 primaries against Bush.
McCain can't win on the issues or by being honest. McCain is the swiftboater-in-chief. The new McCain is a liar, a man who will say or do anything. God help us if this guttersnipe wins in November.

McCain lacks honour or shame. A McCain Presidency would be Bush's third term ( his election bid is becoming a carbon copy of Bush's). McCain himself becomes more like Richard Nixon everyday.
Watch your back Barack.

Obama is absolutely correct.
The only reason Barack Obama could not be the next President of USA is because of his race. People are hiding their racist sentiments within the many adjectives they have given to Mr. Obama: inexperience, we don’t know who this guy is, naive, Muslim, anti-Israel, arrogant, etc, etc.
Conservatives are essentially racist people. Everybody forget that McCain opposed to the Martin Luther King Holiday, and Dick Cheney was against the freedom of Mr. Mandela because he was a terrorist.
If the American people elect another Republican as their next President they will be the most stupid people on earth. They have already demonstrated their stupidity: they re-elected Bush and they invaded Iraq based on lies. An eventual re-election of another Republican would be the mother of all stupidities

We're getting tired of this mudslinging. I think Obama has preached that he will reject how Washington does things and he needs to start now. I get tired of politicians saying one thing and doing another. He is the only one capable of keeping the tone of this campaign up, we sure are not looking at McCain to to that--we know what to expect from him. WE EXPECT BETTER FROM OBAMA, HE PROMISED TO GIVE US BETTER THAN THAT. We believe he is better than this, thats the difference.

This is so funny. The Obama campaign is trying to use the same tactics against McCain that were used against Hillary Clinton and they aren't working. Republican voters are biased against Latinos, Blacks, and Asians and are proud of it so they don't fall prey to David Axelrod's race-baiting tactics. David, you need another strategy to gain Independent votes. Maybe you should try issues for a change and see how that works. I don't agree with McCain's policies but, at least I know what they are and Obama only chants "Change".
Any anti-Obama comment by the opposition is labeled as racist because Obama is "Black" and has used his race to become the "first African-American candidate of a major political party".
By getting 94% of the African-American vote and many of the young voters who have been taught to be colorblind, he has secured the position of presumptive Democratic nominee by being Black.
The Republican ads stating that he is inexperienced are not based on his skin color but is based on his resume. That is not racist so why is Obama trying to make it so. I don't care whose picture is on the one, five, ten, twenty, fifty, or one-hundred dollar bill. I want a government that is efficient and effective and I don't care what color the people who can provide it are. Black or White, I don't think Obama is capable of accomplishing what I want the changes to be.

Not the independments that McCain needs. The Republican party has lost half it's strength, thanks to George W. the Reagan coalition is dead.
