Late last week, as Barack Obama's trip abroad was dominating national media coverage, John McCain's campaign issued a retort for pundits who wondered if the Arizona Republican was getting lost in all the hoopla.

In an email to reporters, McCain's director of regional media Jeff Sadosky claimed that a majority of Americans actually get their news from "local and regional newspapers and local television news programs" that had been covering McCain all week long.

The purpose of the memo was two-fold: first, to pressure big media to show McCain a little more love, but secondly, to argue that McCain's freeze-out perhaps wasn't such a big deal after all. Featuring numerous clippings from four states the presumptive Republican nominee had visited while Obama was abroad, Sadosky's implicit claim was that the campaign was winning the media war where it really counts, closer to home.

But the local coverage wars are not so clearly tilted toward McCain's advantage. A review of reporting in local papers finds a slew of coverage of Obama's active field operation, mostly hooked on the dozens of Obama campaign offices opened in recent weeks.

This week in Montana, for example, the Helena Independent Record led its story on local organizing with a Obama staffer's line: "Republican presidential candidate John McCain is taking Montana for granted..." The paper noted that the Illinois Democrat currently has six state offices in action to McCain's zero. In a July 31 Bozeman Daily Chronicle story headlined "McCain campaign manager expects big victory," the paper pointed out that a Obama's advantage in paid field staff may be yielding dividends -- citing a Rasumussen poll that showed McCain down five points despite the fact that President George W. Bush carried the state handily over John Kerry in 2004.

Montana isn't the only Republican stronghold where Obama's unprecedented field operation is inspiring positive local coverage. In The Oklahoman, a recent report detailed how a gang of enthusiastic Obama volunteers opened the first office of either campaign in Sooner State. After noting that Obama's national campaign was finalizing plans to open their own official site, the paper reported that "U.S. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has no immediate plans to open an Oklahoma campaign office."

Battleground states are also interested in reporting on Obama's superior ground game. Ohio's local ABC affiliate WTVG reported last week that, even while Obama was abroad, he was also dominating in terms of local outreach.

"And while [Obama] spent more time in Paris today than he has in any part of Toledo this summer, Obama has opened a campaign office in Toledo with dozens of young enthusiastic people pushing his message," the station reported, adding: "McCain does have a headquarters [in Ohio]," the station added. "It's a regional office in Columbus that covers both Ohio and Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Obama has satellite offices open all over both states."

In Michigan, papers in Macomb and St. Clair counties gave prominent coverage to the openings of new Obama offices. And in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, The Daily News reported this week that Obama has 10 to 1 advantage over McCain in terms of state offices.

So while McCain has a valid point that the national media may navel-gaze from time to time, by electing not to match Obama's investment in field offices, his may also be losing the race to inspire the positive local coverage they cite as being important.

I always hated how the dems only tried in the blue states and a few others. Its about time we spread out. There is a whole country out there and everyone needs to hear about jobs and healthcare.

that's Howard Dean's "50 state strategy". The party owes a lot to that man. He helped drag them out of the self-defeating rut they were in, and being a doctor, he has attempted to show them that yes, Dems too have spines!

The campaign has a huge presence even in North Carolina, will soon have an office in every one of its 100 counties. Jesse Helms territory! Imagine that.

They reported that John Kerry lost Iowa and the Presidency by 10 votes per county in Iowa. His campaign did not go there and push for voter turnout. They were in Florida trying to convince the mildly retarded that if they vote for Bush things will get worse.

I'm in GA but would love to see Obama make a big push into TX. Maybe somewhere on BO's site we can set up a "win texas" contribution page and request that the funds be used to support an aggressive attempt at winning that state. Maybe the same for AZ.

This war will be won on the ground. Registering voters and getting them to the polls on Election Day. Period. Let McCain make the same mistake that Hillary made that it is about celebrity.

Make sure voting age person you know gets out to vote. They all need to know when and where and what to do. This is how the White House will be won. The rest is just talk.

Kally, people really need to stop acting like Obama wasn't telling the truth about what the republicans were going to do. They have been doing it for years. Today on sean he had a guy on there that has wrote a book about guess what "Obama being a radical".......we all know that this is what the republicans will do and for people to react as if it's something totally unheard of are just being dishonest about the situation of politics. Remember the Willy Horton ad and the Harold Ford ad?

It's a sad commentary on a man who was once regarded as a war hero. He is destroying his own legacy with his disasterous campaign.

Like the Clintons, time has passed McCain and his handlers by..............you can't run a campaign like that anymore and expect to win.

Conservatives are turning to Bob Barr and moderates to Obama every time McCain opens his mouth.

Why can't the media just report what is said and done by the candidates without putting their own spin on it?
If you want the facts you have to actually watch the speeches because most everything is distorted by the talking heads.
Anyway, why should they have to show love to McCain? WHY? He's been in politics since Adam and Eve, and we want to learn about Senator Obama!
Want better ratings? Start reporting on Senator Obama more so we can actually learn about this man.

Yes, because speeches are filled with facts.

You want to know why the media doesn't just report on what is said and done by the candidates? Try reading something in the newspaper and repeating it to a friend, without adding any commentary of your own. You've already shown this to be impossible by saying that McCain has "been in politics since Adam and Eve..."

Spin is commentary and analysis. If I tell you a fact, say "Gas is $4.50 per gallon in California today", you will probably ask a question like "What was it yesterday?" or "Is that a lot?" or "Do they drive a lot in California?" or something along these lines...why? Because you want context for your fact.

Facts do not exist in a vacuum...they must have context before you can form an opinion of these so-called "truths."

So, you want to know, why can't the media just report it without spin? Well, because people like you demonstrate an inability to reach accurate conclusions based on facts alone. You can't figure it out, so the rest of us have to spend our time explaining it to you.

That's why spin exists...

Spin exist because the media has a bias. The media should hold politicians accountable for their actions and their statements. Bush's and the Republican policies have a net loss in jobs in America. Oil is extremely high, we are involved in conflict in Iraq that may lead to War Crimes charges. Bush and McCain have both said that Tax Cuts were effective, well it is time for them to prove it, and it is the media's job

I don't know about the rest, but CBS wants to explain the news. Otherwise, "people are scratching their heads."

Obama's campaign offices are not only designed to help Obama, but are also focusing and coordinating with officials on US congressional district elections and US senate elections. This is why there is a 50 state strategy. Democrats are going to hammer Republicans down this November while they stand around and count flip flops. They won't know what hit them.

You are right. I would imagine that every dem on the down ticket is happy about Obama being the nominee. When they see volunteers armed with voter registration forms, they know Obama isn't going to be the only one to benefit from that new voter. They know that when the volunteers are working to get out the vote, the vote will also come their way. This is a bad year for Reps from the national level, down to the state and local. Just watch.

A respectable deflection attempt by the McCain camp, but while Obama himself isn't able to talk to every news organization on the local level, but his campaign is. Those skeptical of Obama's 50-state strategy may want to take another look.
