MOSCOW — A rare total solar eclipse will pass just west of Russia's third-largest city Friday, but crowds of tourists in Novosibirsk to witness the event may find their view of the event obscured by clouds and rain.

The eclipse _ the moon passing in front of the sun _ will begin in Arctic Canada around 0945 GMT, sweep across Greenland, pass through western Siberia, Mongolia and end in central China more than an hour and a half later.

Officials in Novosibirsk, Siberia's cultural and scientific capital, have set up 16 viewing sites, including special equipment for safely looking at the sun, for visitors who have come to the city for the astronomical event.

More than 5,000 foreign tourists were expected to show up in the city of 1.5 million for the event, said Olesya Varnavido, manager of the Olympia Reisen-Sibir travel agency.

If skies are clear, witnesses in the Russian city will see the sun vanish for two minutes and 20 seconds at 5:45 p.m. local time (1045 GMT.)

But the weather may not cooperate. Intermittent showers were forecast for the region late Friday afternoon.

"Meteorologists promise rain, and that would be very disappointing," said Tatiana Klyukina, a spokeswoman for the Novosibirsk mayor.

The forecast for northwestern China, meanwhile, called for sunny skies.

People have been recording solar eclipses for perhaps 4,000 years, and they typically inspire a combination of dread, fascination and awe _ especially for those standing the path of the total eclipse, where the sun vanishes, the stars come out in daytime and temperatures briefly drop.

Eclipses have long intrigued astronomers, in part because they allow direct observation of the Sun's corona. One eclipse was used to confirm Einstein's theory of general relativity.

In recent decades they also have become popular events for tourists, inspiring a subculture of what are called "eclipse chasers."

Video of the eclipse will be carried live on a number of Web sites, including one in Novosibirsk: . http://novosibirskguide.com/eclipse-2008/live-broadcasting/

The U.S. space agency NASA will carry a live broadcast of the event from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwestern China: . http://sunearthday.gsfc.nasa.gov/2008eclipse/

According to NASA, the next total eclipse is expected July 22, 2009, starting in India and continuing across Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China and into the Pacific Ocean.

Global warming must have caused it.

It is a sign. The sun will actually be seen above Beijing during the Olympics for 22.7 minutes during the Olympics. Sorry Beijing, but yours is going to be a sad gloomy Olympics even without your restrictions and oppression.

Two monks are arguing whether the flag on the pole is moving by itself or the wind is making it move.
They asked a passing abbot. "You fool$, It's your minds that are moving."

08-01-08. Infinity on both sides with the one who was chosen by God, remember, God speaks directly to Cheney's puppet, directly in the center. A good date and an easy date to remember for a false attack from Iran on American troops. After all, it's getting very close to election time. The new wanna-be president, McSame as bush, wants his own war, not his idols war.

Don't fret if you miss it... the McCain campaign has promised to block all the light, anyway.

FYI, solar eclipses happen only in the daytime, when the sun is out. The moon passes in front of the sun, as seen from Earth.
Lunar eclipses happen only at night, when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow.

For us here on the west coast of the U.S. the eclipse is at its peak at 3:21 am. That's Friday night in Russia . . . .where you can actually see the eclipse.

It's Friday morning for most of us. The Eclipse's peak of totality occurs at 6:21 am EDT and 3:21 am PDT.

She'd probably have to turn around to see it though, what with those bright eyes of hers.

Once we steal their sun-disk, they will beg us to raise the capital gains tax, repair America's bridges, end the War, support alternative energy and dump Kristol and Krauthammer into a live volcano. Throw in a meteor, and I think we can squeeze them for gay marriage, the repeal of telecom immunity and the compulsion of Karl Rove's testimony under oath.

Was it 78 or 79 that there was an eclipse that you could see from the west coast? I went to Fake Stonehenge on the Columbia River Gorge in Washington with a zillion hippees who were p^ss^ng off the druids who were trying to have some kind of ceremony. Anyone else see that one?

Someone make sure to wake John McCain so he can see this. It will be way past his bedtime (7:30PM EST) Shake his bed really, really hard. He has had a hard week.

I've always wanted to see one. I've read that the appearance of the planets during a full solar eclipse gives the observer a mind-bending sense of the scale of the solar system. Apparently there are people who travel the world and trek to some very remote places just for the experience.

the occult likes full moons for their personal darkness. Hope bushco doesn't have something nasty planned for the USA, like 7-7 in london, or 9-11.

I think ghost is referring to the chatter that exists concerning places like the Bohemian Grove. I have seen video footage and read articles on the subject and I remain neutral on validity. I do not rule it our or rule it in. From this vantage point, it is just interesting and that is it. Bush is supposedly a Christian and some might see that as an occultist belief system.

I am just offering reasons why ghost might not be an intellectual "Forest Person", which ghost still could be but the statement is not necessarily indicative of that. It is more humor than serious statement as I read it.

Cheers!
