Barack Obama's vice presidential vetting process has moved into a new stage in which a larger than previously reported group of candidates is being exposed to a "deeper dig" into their backgrounds -- in the words of a source familiar with the process.

The hard vetting involves follow-ups to lingering questions about candidates' backgrounds and clarifications of their stands on issues. While the process is intensifying, the fact that the number of potential candidates still being considered is larger than generally believed, suggests that no decision is imminent, just 26 days before the opening of the Democratic National Convention.

It also runs counter to much-publicized comments by Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine Tuesday that "there has been a long list. It seems to be getting shorter."

I certainly hope this is true. Kaine would be a disastrous choice, and a slap in the face of all women, particularly those who orignally supported Hillary Clinton. They (and those of us, like me, who supported Obama in the primary) will not be very happy if Obama appoints an anti choice, anti contraception politician like Kaine. The last thing we need is a vice president who will use his tie breaking vote in the Senate to attack women's health and liberty, and who will take his marching orders not from Obama (who has a 10o% approval rating from Planned Parenthood) but from Joseph Ratzinger (and no, "I'm Catholic" is NOT an excuse for voting against women's right to choose. If you don't like abortion don't have one).
If Obama wants to select a Catholic governor as VP, he need look no further than Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who has three times as much experience as Kaine, and has ardently defended women's right to choose against the right wing in Kansas.

Told you. Obama was clear, if you hear anything, it is nothing but rumor, not true. He has kept a super tight lid on the whole thing. So people need to stop getting their underwear all twisted every time some new rumor comes out.

I'm sure the original long list HAS gotten shorter. As I recall, it wasn't Kaine who was saying it was down to three, tho, it was the MSM. Once again, the WP succeeds at being snarky and twisting those pesky little details to suit its agenda.

I sort of figured the Obama campaign was going to take longer to research these running mates. I'll bet he doesn't declare his veep until the convention.
