I Like ItI Don’t Like It

UPDATE: The Obama campaign has reacted to McCain's latest ad starring him and Moses.
This time Obama didn't personalize the response. Much smarter than how he responded yesterday to the Britney-Paris ad.

From the Obama campaign:

"It's downright sad that on a day when we learned that 51,000 Americans lost their jobs, a candidate for the presidency is spending all of his time and the powerful platform he has on these sorts of juvenile antics," said spokesman Hari Sevugan. "Senator McCain can keep telling everyone how 'proud' he is of these political stunts which even his Republican friends and advisors have called 'childish', but Barack Obama will continue talking about his plan to jumpstart our economy by giving working families $1,000 of immediate relief."

The fallout over the Britney Spears-Paris Hilton celebrity ad only appears to have emboldened John McCain's new strategy to paint Barack Obama as a witless fad. McCain's latest ad ratchets up the celebrity comparisons by putting the Senator next to one of the biggest figures in time: Moses.

McCain's strategy doesn't feel too different from a tactic Hillary Clinton used against Barack Obama in February when her campaign started to realize it wasn't going to fulfill its media-anointed mantle of inevitability. Hillary mocked Obama, telling the crowd "the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing, and everyone will know we should do the right thing, and the world will be perfect."

Making fun of Barack Obama as a Jesus figure obviously didn't help Hillary. That doesn't mean it can't help McCain. Unlike Hillary, the GOP candidate isn't the one explicitly making fun of Obama. When Hillary did it, people made fun of her. Yes, McCain's in the commercials, but only to approve them. By creating an ad campaign around mocking Obama, McCain is forcing him to comment and therefore make the ads a bigger deal. That's exactly what happened on Thursday when Obama commented on the Paris-Britney ad. Obama took the bait and did just what the McCain camp wanted him to do when he said McCain was saying he "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills." Obama's comment painted himself as different, a figure of race, a person who rose up by different means, perhaps even through celebrity... Let's see how the Obama campaign reacts to this one. (Update: Obama has responded. See above.)

ABC dissects the ad to show where the McCain camp is spinning "the one" out of context:

"We are the ones we've been waiting for," Obama says, in his Super Duper Tuesday speech in California.

The narrator continues: "And he has anointed himself, ready to carry the burden of The One. To quote Barack, 'I have become a symbol of America returning to our best traditions.'"

As we covered earlier in the week, that quote was actually Obama telling House Democrats that the big crowds and enthusiastic receptions he received in Europe had less to do with him than they had to do with a desire for a new U.S. foreign policy. In a way, it was more a statement of humility than arrogance.

"He can do no wrong," the narrator says.

Cut to an excerpt of CBS's Lara Logan asking Obama, "Do you have any doubts?"

"Never," Obama says, smiling.

"Can you see the light?" asks the narrator.

Dumbest ad yet. How many people will see this and Moses and think, "whoa, that's exactly the kind of guy we need!" Especially if they mute the TV during commercial breaks.

Anti-Christ...? Messiah...? Guy who can deliver three points from "out of town"?

Who can keep up? How about acknowleging Obama is simply a wise, quick and kind human being? He is the "one" person we could really use right now.

Sadly.... The average I.Q. is 100 points. Average means fully one-half of the population fall below that point. I had a German Shepherd once who would not have believed this crap. She would've found it insulting. Only half-kidding here.

The McCain campaign is starting to get a good feel of their core voter base.I think that tactically the ad is a good move since this entire ploy is meant to make low info voters react as well as generate free buzz from the press and on top of that it's cheap!

they understand that in this new 24h information age you can make a great impression without a lot of cash; Again politically I think it's great but of course distorting the truth and being engaged in a dishonest campaign is extremely low and painful to watch but welcome to politics!

The Obama campaign need to understand that this is becoming a real street fight and playing nice will only lead to unfortunate consequences in November. Bottom line they should not fall into the 2000 election trap, where James Baker basically trounced warren Christopher!

On the first day, man created God.

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime; give a man religion and he will die praying for a fish.

A lie is a lie even if everyone believes it. The truth is the truth even if nobody believes it.

Take from the church the miraculous, the supernatural, the incomprehensible, the unreasonable, the impossible, the unknowable, the absurd, and nothing but a vacuum remains.

“There are no atheists in foxholes” isn’t an argument against atheism, it’s an argument against foxholes.

Faith does not give you the answers, it just stops you asking the questions.

When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion.

While it is clear to me that John McCain is absolutely unqualified to be president, I must admit (as an Obama supporter) his campaign has run some pretty funny (if not, stupid) ads recently. This new ad is extremely funny.

Look Barack Obama is going to be president. He may win in a landslide or just by a few percentage points, but he is going to win. The only way he is going to lose is if John McCain and members of his campaign somehow convince the Bush administration to secretly kidnap Barack and hide him overseas. LOL!!!!

Obama 2009 through 2017!

LOL - talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

If O's "The One", then its obvious he's ready to lead?
Why?
Because G*d says so.

Silly MC and his mixing of religious metaphors...

Jmac has lost all class. This is the tackiest strategy I have ever seen on the political scene. The mac is so desperate he has to resort to religious analogies. He has gone off the deep end with this one. Someone please attack Jmac's character. He left his first wife after she had a serious accident for a blonde bimbo heiress. He was a philanderer. What does that say about his character. He has been in bed with lobbyists for the longest time, and he is GWB's twin.

Start rolling out the truth on Jmac.

This may be another ad that McCain airs twice and then allows the cable news shows to repeat over and over again. And, again, he'll be hit immediately for taking the "I am a symbol" statement out of context, and for not getting that Obama's last clip was clearly making fun of himself. And, of course, McCain'll be hit for having nothing in his quiver but sneering attack ads. So much for Steve Schmidt being the guy to tighten up the McCain campaign message.

Stil, it's nothing but Obama doing nothin' but lookin' good. Can I send $$ to the McCain campaign so long as it's only used to air this ad?

What Obama does need to do now -- after his European tour -- is to be a regular guy and talk about the white/Kansas part of his background. I like his speech the other day where he pointed out that he seems to be related to Wild Bill Hickock.
