There is no doubt: in the past few weeks John McCain has made a conscious decision to run a negative, personalized campaign against Barack Obama. A campaign that was once focused on pushing the biographic attributes of its own candidate has now become almost uniquely intent on tearing down the opponent.

This reading is objective. In the past month, the McCain campaign has launched ten web and television advertisements. The first two spots were almost entirely devoted to McCain. The last eight contained only three brief mentions of the Arizona Republican. Indeed, of the 16 minutes and 35 seconds of space that these eight ads filled, 14 minutes and three seconds were spent focused on or discussing Barack Obama. The Illinois Democrat was criticized on everything from high gas prices and snubbing the troops, to egomania. There was, of course, an eight-minute web ad debunking Obama's consistency on the Iraq War. But even if that spot is removed from the equation, the Obama-to-McCain ratio of ad focus is still almost two-to-one.

On Friday morning, Obama surrogate Sen. Claire McCaskill, bemoaned that McCain had become "obsessed" with Obama. The proof is in the pudding.

On July 7, McCain's campaign put out the spot "Love" a one-minute biographical advertisement that focused almost solely on the Senator. The ad began with the social tensions of the 60s and moved from there into McCain's history from Vietnam onward. The only dig at Obama was implicit. "John McCain doesn't tell us what we... HOPE... to hear. Beautiful words cannot make our lives better..."

On July 10, McCain put out the ad "God's Children," a minute-long spot meant to appeal to Latino voters. None of the footage includes Obama. It is, rather, mostly a clip from a Republican primary debate in which the Arizona Republican discussed the military sacrifices made by Hispanic Americans.

On July 17, 2008, the McCain campaign put out a nearly eight-minute long "Obama documentary." An effective, albeit lengthy, spot, it is devoted in its entirety to painting the Democratic nominee as a serial flip-flopper on the war.

On July 18, the campaign put out "Troop Funding" to preempt Obama's trip to the Middle East and Europe. It was harshly negative, accusing Obama of changing positions for political purposes and misleadingly saying that he voted against troop funding (when McCain had, by that technical definition, done the same). The last ten seconds of the 30-second-spot were devoted to McCain, however, declaring that "he has always supported our troops. "

Story continues below

On July 21, McCain released the "Pump" ad, which blames Obama for the high price of gasoline. The spot, which begins with the shot of a pump and people chanting Obama's name, crests with the question: "Who can you thank for rising prices at the pump?" A picture of the Illinois Democrat is plastered on the screen. The last 12-seconds of the thirty-second spot are devoted to McCain's proposal to drill for more energy.

On July 26, McCain put out a web ad that absolutely eviscerated the press for being in bed with Obama. Almost three minutes long, there is not a single mention of John McCain. "Do you feel that thrill running up your leg yet?" the advertisement concludes.

Also on July 26, the McCain campaign reworked the Troops ad that they ran eight days ago, only this time they put in the false accusation that Obama wouldn't go see wounded soldiers because "the pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras." The last ten seconds included footage of McCain, but offered no specifics only policy, simply "John McCain is always there for our troops."

On July 30 comes the real kicker, the now-infamous "Celeb" ad, which McCain has said he is "proud" of. The spot, thirty-seconds in length, is literally all about Obama, with McCain only coming in to say he endorsed the message. Indeed, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- to whom Obama is compared -- get as much face time.

On August 1, the McCain campaign is fully focused on Obama. This time, they put together a minute long spot that is devoted entirely to Obama's Berlin speech and ask why the Illinois Democrat never mentioned a Latin American country in his address. Designed to appeal to Hispanic voters, McCain's name only comes up when he endorses the message.

Later in the day, McCain put out a web ad titled "The One" that, again, is all about Obama. It goes for a minute-and-a-quarter and mocks Obama as an egotistical maniac along the lines of Moses (played by Charlton Heston). "We were having some fun with our supporters who we sent it out to," McCain explains later in the day. "We are going to display a sense of humor in this campaign."

John's just jealous - he's been dying to be a celeb for years - SNL, apperance in movies (Wedding Crashers), frequent guest to talk shows, etc...

Hey, only say to deal with the smears is for someone to match them one for one - McC's got a lot of material to offer groups like MoveOn - heck, you can just show clips of him... unfortunately for John-Boy, in this case, they won't use clips of people cheering him

Hey Republicans, I hate the Republican party. For fifty years, I've watched the Republican candidate for President, mostly run dirty, lying, mean spirited campaigns. Or stand mute while other low-life republicans with money and access, do it for him. Mostly the tactic works, so on it goes.

Does not make me proud of my country's Presidential campaigns.

I'd pay to see a two-party system in this country...............that doesn't include the republican party.

I'm a Democrat and I don't agree with you. What we need is not an absence of the Republicans but a healthy Republican Party, one that takes its principles seriously, is committed to Constitutional government, believes in the rule of law, has a libertarian core that respects personal privacy and budgetary restraint, that doesn't start wars for the fun of it or to convince mommy that the President is more macho than daddy and that can be trusted.

We don't have that now. We have a kind of fascist junta installed in a coup d'etat back in 2000. It uses the founding document of our nation as an aiming point in the President's john. It has made cronyism more important than competence and made the Department of Justice a Christian right bawdy house.

The Republican Party has to come back and balance the country. To do that, it is going to have to spend four to eight years out of the White House and in the minority in Congress. That will let it purge the neocons.

today i was driving on a single lane no-pass road with a 55 mile speed limit when I came to a row of cars going about 40mph. despite the fact that there was plenty of shoulder to pull over and let cars go by the lead car continued at about 15 miles an hour under the limit oblivious to the now 2 dozen or so cars backed up behind. when the car finally turned after several miles, I noticed the old white driver and the MCCain 08 sticker on the car.

"The One" video . . . If were McCain I would not want to show all this Christian imagery and compare Obama to Christ . The Republicans have worked too hard to paint Obama as a Muslim to now associate his face with Moses and Christ seems a very bad mistake. People's brain's will link the Christain/Obama concepts and it will back fire.

The media was providing the juice for the McCain campaign this week by repeating these videos without him having to pay for them. They are mostly just adolescent; but "The One" is disturbing. It appears they are hinting he is the Anti-Christ. It is cold calculated character assassination aimed to further sway those who are getting all those viral Muslim emails. This is a kind of subliminal warfare that goes beyond Swiftboating. I don't think the Obama campaign can respond to all of these but there should be surrogates who can address issues about McCain that are not getting much play.
1. His relationship with current wife Cindy while still married to his first wife, who was a close friend of Nancy Reagan.
2. His propensity to crash Navy planes.
3. His relationship with lobbyists despite having the oft repeated reputation in the media for being an ethics reformer.

His age is something that does not get mentioned much. His confusion on details, lacking a grasp of the economy and living in the military past suggest to me that he may be having more than one senior moment. " Seniors having a McCain Moment" could be a good campaign sticker.

MC is playing the republican party like a fiddle. He's only going along with the program because he wants to win. MC loathes the republican party he's never gotten over the 2000 race and all the lies and rumors Rover and his goons spread about him. If the American people are dumb enough to elect him once he's in office he'll totally blow the republican party off!!!!

Who is McCain trying to kid? First he wanted Obama to go to Middle East and other countries, hoping he will falter, and when Obama goes there and performs exceptionally well including in Europe. He stated bitching that Obama appeared to presidential overseas when he should be at home addressing the economic issues. Obama comes home and starts addressing economic and other important issues and now McCain issues frivolous nonsensical false attacks with two bimbos first to stir up what? Now he says Obama is injecting race into the campaign. What nonsense and baloney, who gains when race is injected in the campaign, certainly not Obama. He is doing what Hillary did, injecting race, insulting, ridiculing and demeaning Obama in ways that even Bush before him did not dare to with Kerry. The bottom line is that McCain does not want to talk about McCain, an angry old man, who has shifted his positions so dramatically. He denounced the right wing evangelists before now he is graveling for their endorsements, he was against off shore drilling now it could not be soon enough, never mind it won’t reduce the gas price, he was against bush tax cuts now he wants to make them permanent, the list goes on. He has no shame and will do anything to get himself elected. If elected he will start another war and bankrupt the country, and then blame Obama for it.

McCain's style of GOP politics, just goes to show that "Bubba people," who have been re-energized by McCain and HRC during her attempt to become a nominee, and this is what America want, not somebody smart, whose interest is for the greater good of the country, but they want someone who will only benefit themselves, and say anything to win, (i.e. McCain who only apologized to Black Americans, because he is running for president, otherwise an apology would not have come forth) at the expense of the American people. Those" Bubba people". it seems that they can be told anything, like the moon is blue, and they will believe it., but never take the time to find out the truth. Is this the American way?

The difference between John McCain and Barack Obama becomes ever more starker. On the one hand you have a wind-up doll in John McCain, spouting all the same old rhetoric with a tape recording that can "flip-flop" with the touch of a switch. On the other hand you have a real, live, authentic, innately intelligent human being in Barack Obama grappling intelligently with issues as they arise ... flexible and flowing ... a master statesman and born leader. Under John McCain the U.S. will sink into painful obscurity. Under Obama ... with a steady hand engaging the American people with TRUTH to wake up and get involved, the US has a chance of rising once again. It will take years and hard work and a fundamental change in peoples' consciousness for this to happen however and people have got to be prepared for this. The People can start by cleaning out the dinosaurs from the House and Senate and insisting on fixed 4 to 8 year terms for their representatives. Nancy Pelosi should be the first to go.

The most hysterical part of any of these ads for me was the expression on grandpa's face at the end of the "celebrity" ad. It's something halfway between lunatic and just plain re tarded.

When he was O*bama's age M*Cain thought of himself as hot. He had dumped the first wife, after cheating on her for years, for the second wife, a younger, richer one whom he has cheated on for years. Flyboy thought he was hot stuff. Now he finds himself old, frail, balding, and physically diminished. These ads are just illuminating his disillusionment with himself.

All this negative stuff is not good for Mccain or his campaign. While Bush and company ran negative crap, it was just politics for them. Do anything to win. McCain seems to have made it personal against Obama, and this can't be good. It shows that deep down that Obama has gotten inside McCain's head and as a result the old dude has gone a little bit bunkers. Eventually, this psychic embedding will show itself more and more in McCain's demeanour, never mind the ads behind which he can still distance himself, but his obsession with Obama will show itself because the repressed always returns as Freud warned us, and it ain't gonna be pretty because McCain will literally implode before our very eyes. I think all his incoherence, mistakes and lies can be traced back to his obession with Obama, and which forces him to wander, the only stable thing in his mind right now being his disdain for Obama.
