There is no doubt: in the past few weeks John McCain has made a conscious decision to run a negative, personalized campaign against Barack Obama. A campaign that was once focused on pushing the biographic attributes of its own candidate has now become almost uniquely intent on tearing down the opponent.

This reading is objective. In the past month, the McCain campaign has launched ten web and television advertisements. The first two spots were almost entirely devoted to McCain. The last eight contained only three brief mentions of the Arizona Republican. Indeed, of the 16 minutes and 35 seconds of space that these eight ads filled, 14 minutes and three seconds were spent focused on or discussing Barack Obama. The Illinois Democrat was criticized on everything from high gas prices and snubbing the troops, to egomania. There was, of course, an eight-minute web ad debunking Obama's consistency on the Iraq War. But even if that spot is removed from the equation, the Obama-to-McCain ratio of ad focus is still almost two-to-one.

On Friday morning, Obama surrogate Sen. Claire McCaskill, bemoaned that McCain had become "obsessed" with Obama. The proof is in the pudding.

On July 7, McCain's campaign put out the spot "Love" a one-minute biographical advertisement that focused almost solely on the Senator. The ad began with the social tensions of the 60s and moved from there into McCain's history from Vietnam onward. The only dig at Obama was implicit. "John McCain doesn't tell us what we... HOPE... to hear. Beautiful words cannot make our lives better..."

On July 10, McCain put out the ad "God's Children," a minute-long spot meant to appeal to Latino voters. None of the footage includes Obama. It is, rather, mostly a clip from a Republican primary debate in which the Arizona Republican discussed the military sacrifices made by Hispanic Americans.

On July 17, 2008, the McCain campaign put out a nearly eight-minute long "Obama documentary." An effective, albeit lengthy, spot, it is devoted in its entirety to painting the Democratic nominee as a serial flip-flopper on the war.

On July 18, the campaign put out "Troop Funding" to preempt Obama's trip to the Middle East and Europe. It was harshly negative, accusing Obama of changing positions for political purposes and misleadingly saying that he voted against troop funding (when McCain had, by that technical definition, done the same). The last ten seconds of the 30-second-spot were devoted to McCain, however, declaring that "he has always supported our troops. "

Story continues below

On July 21, McCain released the "Pump" ad, which blames Obama for the high price of gasoline. The spot, which begins with the shot of a pump and people chanting Obama's name, crests with the question: "Who can you thank for rising prices at the pump?" A picture of the Illinois Democrat is plastered on the screen. The last 12-seconds of the thirty-second spot are devoted to McCain's proposal to drill for more energy.

On July 26, McCain put out a web ad that absolutely eviscerated the press for being in bed with Obama. Almost three minutes long, there is not a single mention of John McCain. "Do you feel that thrill running up your leg yet?" the advertisement concludes.

Also on July 26, the McCain campaign reworked the Troops ad that they ran eight days ago, only this time they put in the false accusation that Obama wouldn't go see wounded soldiers because "the pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras." The last ten seconds included footage of McCain, but offered no specifics only policy, simply "John McCain is always there for our troops."

On July 30 comes the real kicker, the now-infamous "Celeb" ad, which McCain has said he is "proud" of. The spot, thirty-seconds in length, is literally all about Obama, with McCain only coming in to say he endorsed the message. Indeed, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- to whom Obama is compared -- get as much face time.

On August 1, the McCain campaign is fully focused on Obama. This time, they put together a minute long spot that is devoted entirely to Obama's Berlin speech and ask why the Illinois Democrat never mentioned a Latin American country in his address. Designed to appeal to Hispanic voters, McCain's name only comes up when he endorses the message.

Later in the day, McCain put out a web ad titled "The One" that, again, is all about Obama. It goes for a minute-and-a-quarter and mocks Obama as an egotistical maniac along the lines of Moses (played by Charlton Heston). "We were having some fun with our supporters who we sent it out to," McCain explains later in the day. "We are going to display a sense of humor in this campaign."

During Obama's overseas tour, the McCain campaign mounted an attack based on the premise that the media favored Obama. Since we can all cite plenty of anti-Obama stories, plenty of "reporters" gushing over McCain, and plenty of McCain gaffes that received little or no MSM coverage, the only "evidence" of Obama favoritism that gained any non-partisan traction was the statistical ratio of stories which "featured" Obama, versus stories that "featured" McCain. In other words, during a six-week period, Obama received more coverage than McCain. Keep in mind this totally ignored the issue of whether the coverage was positive or negative for either.

So how did the McCain campaign use its resources to fight back against this perceived injustice? By making ads featuring Obama.

I'm thinkgin Barack Obama didn't mention any Latin American countries because he was visiting EUROPE.
This is just the beginning; after Barack Obama accepts the Democartic Party's nomination, the republicans will make this campaign the most racially divisive in the history of campaigns.

McCain should be careful what he asks for. Latin Americans are likely to respond even more strongly to Obama's charm and charisma and then he'll have to whine about that trip.

McCain's nearing crazy stalker status with these ads.

He certainly seems envious and bitter about the new young(er) man and his appeal to voters.

McCain has so undermined his image as "likeable and honest independent"--who believes that any more? Even his grin he remembers to break out after saying some horrendous thing makes him look insincere and creepy.

Then again, I can't wait to see what stupid thing he says or does next!

Read this recently. It helps explain who McC really is:

McC’s father-in-law (Jim Hensley) got his start as the top henchman for Kemper Marley, who, for 40 years until his death in 1990, was the undisputed political boss of Arizona, acting as the behind-the-scenes power over both the R and D parties. But Marley was more than a politician. He was the Meyer Lansky crime syndicate’s chief Arizona operative.

In 1953, Hensley and (this time) Marley were prosecuted by federal prosecutors for falsifying liquor records. But a young attorney,William Rehnquist, acted as their “mouthpiece” (as mob attorneys are known) and the two got off scot-free. Rehnquist later became chief justice of the Supreme Court and presided over the “fix” that made GWB president in a rightly disputed election.

The story in Arizona is that Hensley took the fall for Marley in 1948 and Marley paid back Hensley by setting him up in his own beer distribution business.

Hensley’s sponsor, Marley, was also a major player in gambling, a protégé of Lansky lieutenant Gus Greenbaum who, in 1941, set up a national wire for bookmakers.

In 1948 Greenbaum was murdered in a mob “hit” that set off a series of gang wars in Phoenix, but Marley survived and prospered as did his protégé, Jim Hensley, whose fortune sponsored McC’s rise to power.

There was a joke a while back that the Republicans would accuse Obama of fathering black children. The ads they're actually running are just as nasty and every bit as ridiculous.

Apparently, some people react to The One video by thinking that Sen. McCain is suggesting that Sen. Obama is the Anti-Christ. (E.g., see Google ad immediately below comment box.)

So, what's worse - playing the "race card" or playing the "Anti-Christ card"?

Moses is not the Anti-Christ, he was the one God chose to lead the people out of boundage into the promise land! Just think, they said Obama is Muslim, now he is leading God's children to freedom, according to McCain. Obama 08!

What you are seeing is the McCain campaign's best shot. Focus on Obama. They know what's coming. They are going to have to run a campaign with McCain as the head of a party that the public believes has run the economy into the ground. Spears ain't going to help him down the long and winding road.

Any one who MOCKS GOD always fall. Remember during the Primaries and Hillary mocks Obama, and ridicule Obama's hope message... she was mocking the Celestials , who are some of the guidiances of the heavens where God abides. And what happens to Hillary??. Now Mccain had just created his own Downfall by mocking a messager of God called Moses.
I also remember when I was a young girl in the choir and one of the boys started making fun of a statute in the burial ground, he later has mental health problems and another one died mysteriously,as for myself, I fell on my two Knees right in front of the statute on our way out of the cemetary. My granny explaned to me that I am lucky that I did not join them, but she warned me never to laugh at such comments again. Then she explained reasons that I kept guided to this day. About the world we can feel, but only few living human can see. Since then I have always stopped and bow my head as a respect to the dead and if I am driving I slow down and do a sign of the cross. You believe or not, I am betting £100 on Monday.

Isn't that a stunning strategy. Eviscerate the people who you need to cover you every time you flip on an issue or make a gaffe (really showing a lack of knowledge).

Interesting. Sounds like a jilted lover, since the "press" made his career, bought into his narrative(s) and helped him deflect attention from a host of scandels that make Senator Stevens look glowing -- including Mrs. McCain's law-breaking and drug use in the 90s. All wiped under the rug -- while THEY throw rocks based upon lies and innuendo -- to a man who is self-made and his wife -- and all African-Americans in the bargain. Topsy-turvy NERVE and an imbalance the "press" are rightfully mocked -- by their all-star poster boy, John McCain -- who mocks EVERYONE/EVERYTHING that doesn't serve HIM. This from a man who graduated 894 in a class of 899. Topsy-turvy.

Fortunately, America is maturing and feeling secure enough to move forward w/out this kind of HYPOCRISY that gave us another cast of legacy losers -- and dynastic entitled FRAT BOYS. The last 7 years is what the "press" should be focused on -- and it is fitting John McCain who knows them and played them so well, has now made THE PRESS a cause celebre of buffoonery as they have allowed him to do to Senator Obama and anyone else in his way (Romney, etc.).

Not so funny when whiny McCain/and his Rovian propagandist Schmidt -- backed up by Fox "News'" Rove himself -- turn their TOXIC spotlight on the Constitutionally-protected PRESS as buffoons. Hoisted by their own petard.

I made a similiar argument earlier on this particular blog. Senator John McCain's past history of personal attacks of negativity were used against him in 2000 by his opponent George W. Bush.

Now fast forward and the same low-brow messages that scuttled John McCain's earnest campaign in 2000 (which he resented Bush for, but now kisses his ring) has been revived by himself to use against his opponent. Vicariously he might be showing the president that he learned to play dirty by his fate.

The John McCain of 2008 is no more, " Mr.Nice Guy". He will drag bystanders like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton into a frey without their knowledge of his intent to make them a negative talking point.

Yet it happened to his family in 2000 without his knowledge of the filth to be thrown at him. As a leader then he was in his right to call foul. I was behind John McCain then.

The ethical boundaries of politics depends on the candidate.

George W. Bush's tactics of 2000 are now John McCain's in 2008. Senator you are a hero, do not let politics lower your esteem while you lower others. It is at this juncture a very questionable road for you to take.

He is a faux hero. He would not be anywhere if it were not for his father and grandfather, both Admirals, and marrying a rich women who bank rolled his state senate campaign.

He's not competent, he's lucky.

Patrick,
Excellent points and shared by many.
If as Heraclitus wrote, "Character is destiny." Senator McCain's recent actions now show him to be sadly lacking and no longer fit for service as our next president.

Maybe it would be a good idea for Mr mccain to release his entire service and medical records to remind everybody, once again, what a healthy and patriotic hero he is. Because att this point in his campaign he has accomplished nothing but to show his hatred and contempt for for his opponent and a total disregard for the intelligence of the voters.

Republicans represent a government for the few rather than a government for all. Their policies harm and exploit the very people who must vote for them. To divert this truth from the voter they must disparage their opponent.

McCain is a big Zero. He comes to the election with empty hands, nothing to offer the voter. He has sold his soul to win the election. If you think its bad now, just wait.

In the end........................I think, Obama and what he represents is more likely to get his image on a coin or bill than McCain. History will forget McCain.

Funny how Mc Shlub is the one who hosted SNL. His hero Reagan was a Hollywood celeb. His buddy Fred Thomson, another celeb, and his buddy Governor Arnie is yet another celeb.

Who's the real Hollywood poser Mc Shlub?

Here's a cultural reference for the McCain campaign. McCain is like Biff the bully, and Obama's like Marty McFly... and just like in those "Back to the Future" movies... McFly will emerge victorious.
