ABC News:

Britney Spears? Paris Hilton? Moses?

The McCain campaign's ads comparing Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to those figures may have prompted a chuckle, but Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told ABC News' Diane Sawyer he's dead serious about the issues in the ads.

"We'll continue to have humor in our campaigns," McCain said. "Those ads really were focused on two things. They were focused on the fact that Sen. Obama wants to raise taxes, and I'm opposed of it. And he opposes an energy policy which would work, including offshore drilling. So the message there is there're stark differences between myself and Sen. Obama."

But McCain wasn't done joking, either.

"I kind of enjoy 'em," McCain said of the ads. "You gotta have a sense of humor in this.

At the beginning of the week they were saying that they might get ignored, between the Olympics and the Dem convention. I guess they found a way to be heard....

I wonder if he remembers that Americans love celebrities? Perhaps they do too much Hollywood bashing to remember that they all go see the moving picture shows.

It's not that Obama is such a celeb, he's just so "Christ like" per the media.

The point is, the adds are no sillier than the Obama adds and continuous goofing on the left on McCain's age. There are plenty of comments here, by way of example.
However, whereas the age centered adds and jokes out of the Obama camp merely mock the candidate, the republican adds are having a more effective impact.
On the one hand, lot's of young folks can giggle and laugh at him and older democrats and independents will be disgusted. On the other, the republicans are busy driving home Obama's vacuity and lack of experience. That, is a valid and serious issue, no matter how goofy the attack is packaged. Americans are worried about our future and will end up voting for wise old grandpa over a empty suit celebrity.
His 180 degree turns on most of his positions tends to make you wonder what he really will stand firm on when the going gets tough and if he's just not a marketing creation like Paris Hilton.

You know what I am tired of? PUMAs and Republicans reducing my decision to support Obama akin to "drinking the Kool Aid". I know the reality of who Barack Obama is. I know he isn't perfect. Unlike they, I have read his books AND have read countless in-depth analysis from across the spectrum of publication -- liberal to conservative. And still Obama is clearly the better choice in my *rational* *free-thinking* *cogitative* mind. I rarely, if ever, reduce Republicans and the "PUMA" crowd to simplistic assertions, but I will now:

They are envious. Plain and simple. How could they not be? Here is a strikingly attractive man, with an intelligent wife, a beautiful family, and they are wildly popular across the globe. And Obama is not a "celebrity" because his life is a PR train wreck like Paris and Britney. He is POPULAR because he is INSPIRING. *gasp!* The man is actually getting people excited about politics and government. He's not the first politician to be immensely popular, so this whole "messianic" label they love to trot out is further proof of how desperately jealous they are.

So, even if you aren't voting Obama, but you still have even an *ounce* of unbiased reasoning in your brain, you should at the very least admire Obama for inspiring people to actually CARE about something bigger than the shopping mall.

The HuffPo censors are out in full lock-down mode today!

I tried to post something about the use of the opposite of "alive" in the headline and how it must have made Mc Ancient supporters quite nervous to see that word in the same sentence as their candidate's name. The brainiac HuffPo censors spiked it. Several times. Even after I reworded it to make clear that I wasn't in any way advocating for that result, merely pointing out how supporters might have reacted to that word.

Well, we'll see if THIS post makes it in or if it too gets spiked.

My comment just may be suspended in purgatory. We'll see if it ultimately posts. heh

There is no logic to the moderapers, except that the more reasoned one's comment the less likely it will show up.

Quoting Sen. McCain, “They were focused on the fact that Sen. Obama wants to raise taxes, and I’m opposed of itâ€.
Current total US debt approximately $9.6 Trillion and rising exponentially
Year 2007 Budget Deficit in Current $- approximately $354 Billion
Projected Year 2008 Budget Deficit-nearly $500 Billion
Year 2007 Trade Deficit (more US imports than exports)- approximately $795 Billion
Percent of total US debt owed to foreign entities- approximately 26% and rising
Oil presently around $130/barrel (was around $28/barrel in 2001)

Britney and Paris and Moses are not running for the Presidency of the US in 2008. So let’s hear specifically how the McCain economic policies (which seem to be primarily based on giving even more tax cuts to the already very wealthy) are going to effectively resolve the above serious economic issues. And, is it too much to ask the MSM to seek objective clarification from the McCain campaign as to specifically how their economic policies are going to resolve the continued escalation of these critical economic parameters?

Great article - thanks for the link. Sort of sums up how he's actually a bad choice, putting aside what a great choice Obama offers.
02:46 PM on 08/03/2008
That was a very interesting and entirely unbiased analysis. Thanks.

This is the same "we're having fun" explanation the guy who made the Ford/Bimbo ad used in Tennesee. And that was no less a plea to the redneck population.
12:28 PM on 08/03/2008
creepy... what does the ad have to do with taxes?....guess the substance of the ad must be in the way you can use your own mind to interpret it myriad meanings

so let me get this straight:

the new talking point is that one must be hated to be qualified for the job of POTUS?

being liked, well-spoken and skinny = not qualified

is that what they're going with?
