WASHINGTON — It is a tradition at many kitchen tables to yell at the newspaper. At John McCain's kitchen table, it is becoming a tradition to yell at one paper in particular: The New York Times.

The latest dustup between the Republican presidential candidate and the "All the News that's fit to Print" big-name newspaper centered on the editorial board's back-to-back criticisms of McCain, one dispatch accusing him of taking the low road and another contending that he was playing politics with race.

The second editorial, which appeared on the Times Web site, said McCain's ads conjured up loaded racial images and raised the specter of O.J. Simpson.

"The presumptive Republican nominee has embarked on a bare-knuckled barrage of negative advertising aimed at belittling Mr. Obama," the editorial board wrote.

The response from the McCain campaign was equally cutting.

"If the shareholders of The New York Times ever wonder why the paper's ad revenue is plummeting and its share price tanking, they need look no further than the hysterical reaction of the paper's editors to any slight, real or imagined, against their preferred candidate," said McCain campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb.

Goldfarb compared the editors to a blogger "sitting at home in his mother's basement and ranting into the ether between games of Dungeons & Dragons."

Times spokeswoman Catherine Mathis declined to comment on Friday.

The relationship between McCain _ a frequent reader of the newspaper _ and the Times has been rocky. Yet such a grudge could pay political dividends for the presidential candidate, as criticizing the liberal media often improves a candidate's standing with Republican Party conservatives. That's critical for McCain, who has never been their favorite.

Back in January, the Times endorsed McCain's candidacy for the Republican nomination, saying, "Sen. John McCain of Arizona is the only Republican who promises to end the George Bush style of governing from and on behalf of a small, angry fringe."

Since then, it's been McCain v. The New York Times.

In February, the newspaper printed a story about McCain and a female lobbyist, reporting that unnamed McCain associates years ago had become concerned the relationship may have become romantic. Both McCain and the lobbyist have unequivocally denied that it was, and the newspaper's editor said he was surprised at the reaction to the story.

A month later, McCain flashed his temper at a Times reporter, repeatedly cutting her off when asked whether he had spoken to Democratic Sen. John Kerry about being his vice president in 2004.

Then last month, Republicans complained that the paper rejected an Op-Ed piece by McCain about the Iraq war after one by Obama was printed and received widespread attention. The paper said it had only tried to get McCain to rewrite the piece to be more specific about his plan.

"McCain is still, I think, upset about the Op-Ed not being printed," said Mike Paul, a former aide to New York Republicans who is now a consultant.

Paul said several recent moves by McCain show the presidential candidate is consciously moving away from his role as an unconventional politician.

"A lot of the maverick positioning is now turning into more conservative positioning, and some of that includes not being afraid to go negative, not being afraid to call a liberal a liberal, and not being afraid to go after a newspaper," said Paul.

Beyond any personal pique there may be, there is a strategy to attacking the Times because it is a bogeyman of conservatives who still may not be entirely sold on the Arizona senator.

Senior advisers are fully aware that assailing the Times could help endear McCain to his talk radio skeptics and their followers.

So, they go after the newspaper often _ and send the message: McCain stands with you.

Advisers also recognize the power of the newspaper to influence how other media organizations cover the campaign, so they are aggressive in pointing out where they feel McCain was wronged.

McCain, though, is hardly the first Republican to want to tear up the paper.

Back in 1992, aides to President George H.W. Bush complained that the Times and other media outlets had mischaracterized his examination of a grocery check-out scanner by suggesting he was unfamiliar with the long-used technology and implying he was out of touch with everyday Americans' economic issues.

In the 2004 election, a conservative anti-tax group called Club for Growth ran an ad decrying Democrat Howard Dean as a "latte-drinking, sushi-eating, Volvo-driving, New York Times-reading" tax-raiser.

"It's not complicated," said Club for Growth spokeswoman Nachama Soloveichik. The paper, she said, "has really become a symbol for a lot of conservative grievances."

"For starters, their editorials are decidedly liberal. That's a no-brainer. And there are often complaints that even their general reporting is biased in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. The New York Times has come to be associated with the Northeast liberal establishment."

Paul, the consultant, said he thinks the McCain campaign's criticisms of the paper may look good to some but won't work in the long run.

"You might get that base, but you won't win the election," he said. "It goes back to the old saying, 'Don't throw rocks at people who own ink barrels' ... and people have gotten sick and tired of the excuse that all media is liberal."

What is really McCain's point by having an ad attack against Barack Obama, showing two young women-Britney Speers and Paris Hylton- celebrities....one of whom recently served prison time and the other who has recently demonstrated a series of bizarre behaviour? Is this showing RESPECT to his Presidential political opponent? Has he not learnt a lesson about negative attacks from his own experience in the 2000 election re: adopting a child from Bangladesh and being accused of fathering a black child? How did he feel then? Didn't this dirty politics hurt? I guess it did! Guess he feels that this is the way Bush and co. won AGAINST him so this is the way to run against Obama. Sad! Pathetic!
One more thing. With his constant argument about Barack's inexperience, isn't McCain playing the AGE card? Isn't youth =inexperience? Why should he....25 years older than Obama, use INEXPERIENCE against an opponent 25 years younger? Shouldn't HE be more experienced? Thirty years in the Senate?
He cannot have it both ways! He opens the door to talk about his old age and frequent gaffes! Barack needs to take off the gloves and go there otherwise they will brand him as not being tough enough to lead the country. Period!

That's all he know - negativity. A person like that should not be the leader of the free world.

He is running for president of the United States, not "leader of the free world."

There is no such position, except in the minds of arrogant Americans who created this mythological office for the Cold War, and still cling to it.

Like "the Allies" from WWI. And the US and whatever cohorts it can still browbeat into joing it are forever "the Allies."

So McCain has gone negative on the NY Times? Well, that is just another aspect of McCain's overall negativity, period. If anyone is justified in complaining, it is the American people. For American citizens are being denied a robust discussion on the real issues impacting their lives. Instead, we hear the constant, negative nonsense from the McCain camp who apparently are deathly afraid of having to actually discuss real issues. Instead, they create false dramas and ridiculous scenarios that are deliberately designed to lead the all-too-willing media to assist in their attempts at mass distraction and mass distortion. We cannot afford this nonsense. The Republicans have proven to be part of the problem rather than part of the solution for far too long now. It's time that the media assume its responsibility and deal with America in a wise, fair, and truthful manner.

The only silver lining is McCain is finally showing American people who he truly is! This lashing out might not be pretty but it at least shows us where he is mentally before he can even do more damage as a president should he be able to steal this presidency...

Not many people would be able to really say when he's tossing the country off a cliff, "I didn't see this coming!"...

When McCain uses these lowball, silly and juvenile ads it automatically drags Obama down to his level so that he gets part of the blame for waging a superficial campaign when nothing is further from the truth as far as Obama and his staff are concerned. Obama has done his best to talk about his plans for the economy and the war and not criticize McCain, while McCain has done nothing but nip at his heels like a mad dog. Obama and his staff need to be aware of what is happening. They can't give in to this carefully calculated plan to hurt him. People need to be aware of what is happening. We can't let McCain get away with this dirty, mean subterfuge.

Here’s the funny part:

Goldfarb compared the editors to a blogger “sitting at home in his mother’s basement and ranting into the ether between games of Dungeons & Dragons.”

If I worked for a candidate with a track record of making up fanciful stories that supposedly took place long ago and far away in dungeons (stories that improve with each retelling), the last thing in the world I would want to bring up is Dungeons & Dragons. McCain’s story about memorizing the names of the players from the Pittsburgh Steelers of 1968 and using those names to dupe his Vietnamese jailers is about as plausible as the adventures of Mordenkainen the Wizard in the realm of Blackmoor. At least when the late Gary Gygax invented fantasy tales about dungeons, he was entertaining.

Not to worry: Barack Obama gives this country a bonus of +2 to its saving throw versus wankers.

The New York Times is by no stretch of the imagination a "liberal" newspaper, at least not to anyone who isn't a raving lunatic. The Times typically does a good job of covering the different outlooks to every issue and is genuinely fair to both sides, as long as each one has any facts or common sense on their side. What the loony right, a minority (though a powerful one), doesn't understand is that while other journals get bullied into covering their perspective (irrespective of how insane it is), the New York Times knows bullshit when it sees it, and doesn't give it credibility. Simple as that. The Huffington Post and the Daily KOS may be liberal-leaning papers (which I love); the New York Times is centrist and and completely unbiased to either side. Get over yourself, John McCain. Get over yourself, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter, you lunatics.

I couldn't help but laugh at this part:

"Goldfarb compared the editors to a blogger "sitting at home in his mother's basement and ranting into the ether between games of Dungeons & Dragons."

Songbird McCain's stories about his time in a Vietnamese prison (you know, the ones that change and improve with each retelling?) are every bit as fanciful as anything dreamed up by the late Gary Gygax and all his fellow dungeonmasters combined.

That's OK, Obama represents a saving throw vs. war criminals with a +2 bonus.

NY Times can easily increase its circulation and popularity with a detailed series called:

WHY ALBERTO GONZALES SHOULD BE INCARCERATED.

Followed by: WHY CHENEY SHOULD BE IMPEACHED

Followed by: WHY BUSH SHOULD BE IMPEACHED

Just like Congress could increase its approval rating by 20 points by impeaching W.

I wholly encourage J-Mac, Goldfarb, and the rest of Capt. Crash's deluded surrogates to continue their spat with the NYT.
Demeaning people at one of, if not THE most powerful paper in the world will only help 0.
