ORLANDO, Fla. — Republican candidate John McCain's presidential campaign is cynical, not racist, in its efforts to distract voters from real issues, Democratic rival Barack Obama said Saturday.

"In no way do I think that John McCain's campaign was being racist," Obama said in his first meeting with reporters since predicting that McCain and other Republicans would try to scare voters because Obama looks unlike "all those other presidents on the dollar bills" _ most of them older white men.

"I think they're cynical," he said. "And I think they want to distract people from talking about the real issues."

Obama spent a second day in Florida to speak to the National Urban League, the predominantly black group McCain had addressed a day earlier. The Illinois senator offered a fiery defense of his push to bolster the nation's schools and dismissed what he called McCain's "slim record on education."

Obama also used Florida _ a state both sides see as central to victory in November _ as the setting for a shift in policy on offshore oil drilling. While still opposed to expanding oil exploration and development on American coastlines, he said he could reach compromise on the issue if drilling initiatives were part of a broad program aimed at energy independence.

"What I'm interested in, ultimately, is going to be governing," he told reporters at a morning news conference. "What that means is we're going to have to try to get things done."

Asked about the McCain campaign's claim that Obama had "played the race card" _ one McCain spokesman had suggested that McCain was being painted as a racist _ Obama called the criticism an attempt to alter the campaign's focus.

He added of the Republicans' approach: "They're very good at negative campaigning. They're not so good at governing."

A McCain campaign spokesman, Tucker Bounds, contended that Obama was backing off.

"We're glad the Obama campaign retracted Barack Obama's accusation because it was absolutely false, and we're moving on," Bounds said in a statement. "The only 'cynical' candidate in this election is Barack Obama for his continued opposition to John McCain's comprehensive energy plan that includes additional oil drilling, gas tax relief and affordable nuclear energy."

Obama pointed the finger back at McCain.

"None of you thought I was making a racially incendiary remark, or playing the race card," he told reporters. "It wasn't until John McCain's team started pushing it that it ended up being on the front page of The New York Times two days in a row."

Since returning from an overseas trip, Obama has sought to refocus the campaign on bedrock economic issues, and he conceded that McCain had made that difficult. He said McCain was seeking to cast him as a risky choice because he doesn't fit the mold of a traditional presidential candidate.

Obama said voters are still taking their measure of a new kind of presidential candidate, and he said McCain is cynically trying to feed any doubts that voters may have _ and with some success. He cited a McCain TV commercial dismissing him as a mere "celebrity" like stars Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

"You've got statistics that say we've lost another 50,000 jobs, that Florida is in a recession for the first time in a decade and a half, and what was being talked about was Paris and Britney," Obama said. "They're clever on creating distractions from the issues that really matter in people's lives."

Obama focused tightly on the economy in a town hall meeting in Titusville, attacking McCain and President Bush over fairness and balance in money matters. Standing before the National Urban League in Orlando, he drew education into the mix.

"We face serious issues in this election and have real differences," he said. "I'm not going to assault Sen. McCain's character, I'm not going to compare him to pop stars. I will, however, compare our two visions for our economic future."

Saying that education had shaped his life and had been made possible by those who came before him, Obama said McCain simply lacks that commitment.

"This is someone who has been in Washington nearly 30 years, has a pretty slim record on education, and when he has taken a stand it's been the wrong one," Obama said.

A great lesson for all....play dirty and get ahead! They do turn my stomach. We, as a country do not deserve any better if we elect this trash. No wonder we are hated by the world!

The republicans are going down in flames. BTW we didn't elect this trash twice; the elections were stolen both times in my not so humble opinion.

Obama can't say it even if it's true. Kerryitis in new form.
Won't anyone speak "jive." and tell the truth, plain and blunt, like David Gergen.
McCain's ads are full of code words for race, racism, nativism, miscegenation, lust, fear of black power. If Obama keeps responding like Kerry, he's dooming himself
Obama said he'd bring a gun if they bring a knife. Where is it? I don't see it.
We may well have a 60 Senate majority and Republican President who hasn't a clue how to govern.

Why? Is he afraid of Hill? Unfortunately, most of Hill's "18 million voters" are not there to help her anymore. And Hillary is NOT women champion when she has such a privileged life. Who believes her failure to snatch the nomination was due to sexism apart from a few vocal supporters? Most women understands why, that is why they left her after her kitchen sink strategy.

I hope John McCain doesn't pick a female VP. That would be a strategic move making him seem more open-minded than he is. More change-friendly. Less misogynist. Less opposed to women's rights. Less a part of the traditional repub mindset. Comes pretty close to election fraud, come to think of it....

I don't think he'd pick a woman, though. Whoever he picks has a good shot at being the GOP nominee four years from now. McC can't possibly expect being nominated at 76 (in 2012). And I don't think the Republican party is ready for a woman nominee four years from now. Nor do I think that a man telling rape jokes and calling women (including his wife) c***ts would want a woman a heartbeat from taking office. Especially when that heartbeat belongs to someone close to the average life expectancy (at the beginning of his possible first term.) He'll choose someone typical of the party, a middleaged white male.

And O can pick a woman, if he decides to pick a woman whose credentials are so clear there's no doubt she is competent. (Say Sebelius or HRC.) The misogynist vote is pretty likely identical to the bigot vote anyway, he won't lose any if he hadn't been able to win any of it anyway. And the only VP candidate likely to win or lose some is HRC, anyone else would be of lesser importance. One votes for the top of the ticket.

Rasmussen poll on the recent playing of the card:
*****

Only 22% Say McCain Ad Racist, But Over Half (53%) See Obama Dollar-bill Comment That Way

August 03, 2008 Sixty-nine percent (69%) of the nation’s voters say they’ve seen news coverage of the McCain campaign commercial that includes images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton and suggests that Barack Obama is a celebrity just like them. Of those, just 22% say the ad was racist while 63% say it was not.

However, Obama’s comment that his Republican opponent will try to scare people because Obama does not look like all the other presidents on dollar bills was seen as racist by 53%. Thirty-eight percent (38%) disagree.

Both campaigns expressed a desire to move beyond the recent flap. On Saturday Obama backed off the racism charge and accused McCain's campaign of cynicism instead. He also rejected McCain's charge that the Democrat himself had brought race into the campaign with his dollar bill comment.

McCain's campaign is clueless, whether intentionally or not I don't know. Obama played the AGE card and the McCain campaign decided it wanted in on the Race card.

The GOP never met a fact it liked. Same for Christians. Facts are of this world whereas the GOP and Christians prefer to be not of this world. They seek to deny anything physical.

Take "affordable nuclear energy" for example. It's never been affordable. It's never been profitable. What it has been is expensive and extremely unfeasible. Those are the facts they seek to deny and traditional media loves playing their game.

In FL on Friday the M*Cain campaign had the only black reporter, a senior writer from the Tallahassee newspaper, evicted from a rally. He had proper credentials from his newspaper and specific credentials allowing him entry to the event. He had not spoken or caused any disruption. And, when another reporter asked why this man was led away, that reporter was also removed.

Swift Boat all over again!!

"If they bring a knife, I'll bring a gun" --A water gun.

This limp noodle cannot defend himself, will he be able to defend America?

"I am tough" !! - Yeah right ..one word aluminum.

I was a big Obama supporter. Not anymore. I want a President who will knock few heads when he is attacked. Not a pacifist.

I guess it is not too late to kick this bum out!!

O is too nice to mcdaddy. But that's O's personality and I don't hate him for it.

The comfort O gives people is magnanomous and fulfilling. Mcdaddy makes people feel sick on the stomach and very uncomfortable. He is like a leech drawing blood out of his supporters and they seem lifeless behind him on stage. They don't seem to be focusing or is happy about what he is saying. They seem to be a bunch of "lettuce heads" just sitting there waiting for it to be over. I guess cue cards come up when they are supposed to applaud because you can tell, it is not a willingly spontaneous reaction but a contrived one.

O, however, makes people smile just to see him smile. His presence and speeches makes shivers go up your leg like Chris Matthews. You are encouraged to get up and applaud for the sheer honesty and secureness of his words. He makes you feel safe.

Now who in the world would want a haunting, insecure, nasty, rude, mean, lying old man to be their president?

I see that Obama finally was called out for playing the race card and now is backing away as fast as possible.

I wish the Clintons had been as effective as McCain on this tactic. Talk about a distraction!
09:53 AM on 08/03/2008
McCain might not be racist, but his campaign certainly is. They have nothing to offer, so they have no other strategy to use.

I hope McCain picks a woman--Hillary Clinton to be his VP! She is a perfect fit in temperment, tactic and modus operandi. And her presence will sink his candidacy like a stone.

Oh, I don't think the sold out senator from Arizona needs any help losing this one.
Hardly a day goes by when the K-Street sweetheart doesn't say something monumentally stupid in front of his clueless neo-crowds.
I've seen high school class presidential campaigns run smoother than the one Johnny Boy is putting together; leading me again to suspect that Senator McK-Street and his owners don't really want to win come November.
Nope, McK-Street and his owners are all lazy, good for nothing, blue-blood, fancy pants (with their $500 loafers) who are great at making messes but who always leave the clean up to the next guy.

Reading Barack's comments, I am struck by how fortuneate we are to have this candidate. God speed, Barack! I hope you survive the dirty tricks and lies of the GOP, because we sure need you in the presidency!
