Bodies of devotees are seen in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, India, Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008. The devotees were attending a nine-day religious festival at the Naina Devi Temple. NEW DELHI — Thousands of panicked pilgrims stampeded Sunday at a remote mountaintop temple in northern India during celebrations to honor a Hindu goddess, sending dozens of people plummeting to their deaths and trampling scores more. Police said 145 people were killed.

Rumors of a landslide apparently started the panic at the shrine in the foothills of the Himalayas, said C.P. Verma, a senior government official in the Bilaspur district.

Pilgrims already at the Naina Devi Temple began running down the narrow path leading from the peak. There, they collided with devotees winding their way up.

With a concrete wall on one side and a precipice on the other, there was nowhere to escape and they were crushed. At one point a guard rail broke and dozens of people fell to their deaths.

The bodies of the devotees _ many dressed in brightly colored holiday clothes _ carpeted the path, intertwined with flattened iron railings. Many still held the flowers and food they planned to offer at the temple.

Police said they used a cable car at the shrine to ferry some of the bodies down, and helicopters flew in to take the wounded to hospitals.

At the Bilaspur hospital in Himachal Pradesh state, rescue workers unloaded bodies wrapped in brown blankets from a truck and laid them in neat rows so they could be identified by relatives.

"I rushed to the spot in search of my three children who had gone to pay obeisance at the hilltop shrine," Jawahar Khurana told the Press Trust of India news agency as he searched the bodies.

"I fail to understand why God was so cruel to us," he said.

All the bodies were taken to the Anandpur Sahib hospital in the neighboring state of Punjab where authorities were carrying out autopsies, senior police officer R. N. Dhoke told The Associated Press by telephone from the hospital. He said the death toll was not expected to rise further.

Many of the dead were women and children, he said, and another 37 people were injured and in hospital.

Tens of thousands of worshippers had flocked to the remote temple in the foothills of the Himalayas to celebrate Shravan Navratras, a nine-day festival that honors the Hindu goddess Shakrti, or divine mother.

The temple is about 155 miles northeast of New Delhi.

Deadly stampedes are a relatively common occurrence at temples in India, where large crowds _ sometimes hundreds of thousands of people _ congregate in small areas lacking facilities to control such big gatherings.

Sunday was the second day of the festival and authorities sought to reassure other pilgrims. "There is no need to panic, everything is normalized now," Verma said.

I went to the Rose Parade once. I was on the sidewalk in the middle of the crowd when the floats started passing by. The crowd kept coming from behind while the people in front of me didn't move. We were all crushed in the crowd and at one point I couldn't even breathe the pressure was so great. Then it loosened and I could breathe again. It was frightening. It has nothing to do with religion or non-industrialized states. It's just human nature and physical laws.

Wow, there is an absurd back and forth going on between--let's just say-- some interesting people.

Extremism is the enemy. It is as stupid for an atheist to condemn all religions and religious people as it is for a religious person to condemn atheists. One's choice of religion, or lack there of is important for counting and assigning people to groups. Beyond that, it is a personal decision and isn't indicative of any kind of superiority or inferiority.

Deaths by stampeding happen in secular society as well. Nightclubs, arenas and any other places were groups may gather with less than adequate emergency exits or lanes can have this kind of tragedy.

I think it unfortunate that those people died in that fashion. I think it worse that this incident be a referendum on religion.

All this over an imaginary god. I remember when I was just a kid going to Sunday Morning Church Services with the family. After the services, I was out in front of the church with the other liitle kids. I said to them, "There is no god up there!" One kid said "Your going to get it!" I guess you can figure out what I said after that.
How could I figure out this god thing was a farce at such a young age? It's because I was taught never to worship anybody or anything, but not by my parents. I had a friend who read it in a book by Bertrand Russell called "Why I Am Not A Christian".

It doesn't matter if you are bl ack or W hite or B rown. The upper c aste folks would find all of you as u nt ouchables for the mere fact that you put carcassess in your stomach! That you consume dead animals is enough for them to clean their house once you leave their vicinity.

Its their right to do that.

They should create occupancy limits, and guard the entrances. It's so sad. The Western world is so controlled and sterile, but there is some value in limits and enforcing them. It's the price they pay for having a more natural state with so many people. Like the Carribean, great weather, until a hurricn comes around. Maybe people in India need to be more cautious about the risks of devotion, and find the simplicity of worship in your own heart. You don't have to go anywhere to find God, she's right inside of us. We need to respect the power of masses of people, and avoid it. They seem to be like moths to a flame, if this keeps happening over and over. There are so many situations like this to pray for, it gets overwhelming. At the same time, there is so much good news lately, and such building awareness.

You don't understand - There are several such temples and it's impossible to install an exit ramp, as you suggest. These temples are situated on ridiculously pernicious peaks and mountains. People end up taking helicopters or getting carried by animals to these places. Of course, not everyone is that fanatically devotional.

This makes me incredibly sad. I was just in New Delhi this January and it saddens me deeply to know that these wonderful people have met this awful fate. I travelled all over N. and S. India going from mosque to mosque and temple to temple. So beautiful- the architecture, the people and their reverence for life and spirit.

To the above posters:

I'm sorry but this is India. If you have ever travelled there you would understand and your puzzlement around what seems to be simple building codes/construction would cease. India is not built like America. Having just been there it is almost amusing that people think its just as simple as limiting worshipers or implementing building codes. It is so much more complicated than that. So much more complex. I barely have words for it and certainly could never communicate it here on a comment post.

I wonder why the MSM is so willing to show piles of corpses when it comes to third world nations but you won't see any pictures of something like this happening to Europeans or American soldiers. Hmmm...

They'd rather show pictures like this so people like the commenter above can feel superior. Ever notice that there were multiple terrorist attacks last week and paris hilton got more attention?

This is simply superior gawking, so people can make idiotic comments about the "3rd world" and culture they find alien to them.

"authorities were carrying out autopsies" - what for ... we know why they died. Maybe they were harvesting their organs?

For the third time, autopsies are done in situations like this world wide. Why would they be harvesting organs??????

My previously attempted posts expressed my disgust for the conclusion that you've jumped to. Despite the lack of profanity or the violation of the TOS they were censored. My disgust with these sentiments and this person editing these comments remains.

Autopsies are done as a matter of course no matter what the "obvious" cause, no matter where you are in the world. Your comments are racist in the extreme.

Sigh....India...how can they possibly be touted as "modern"?

It is completely primitive and the Indian govt is one of the most uncaring and irrresponsible governing bodies- safe to say that after Ghandi it went down hill..

Though I'm not an atheist IMHO India is a country where LESS religion would be a GOOD thing; no a GREAT thing.
Below is a link to a recent story in the New Yorker on "Serving The Goddess:" who are sex workers dedicated to the Goddess Yellamma; most of these women are "dedicated" at an early age 6 years old by their struggling families and start their prostitution at age 12-13 shortly after puberty. Most of them are dropping like flies from AIDS.One woman featured in this article lost both daughters whom she also "dedicated" to the Goddess to AIDS- they were 15 and 17.

Religion is not interfered with because the govt understands that it pacifies the people from claiming what is their due: life with dignity; beyond just survival.
