On the day that 16 Chinese police offers were killed by bomb-throwing attackers in western China, The New York Times is running a article on the "smothering blanket of security" imposed across Beijing before the Olympic Games begin Friday. According to the Times, the Chinese are warning that terrorism is a "constant threat." Read more on HuffPost's Olympics big news page.

Chinese officials have thrown an almost smothering blanket of security across this capital of 17 million in preparation for the start of the Olympic Games on Friday. Above all else, Chinese leaders say, these Olympics will be "safe."

They warn that terrorism is a constant threat, particularly from Muslim separatist groups in the Xinjiang region of western China. On Monday morning, Xinhua, the state news agency, reported what appeared to be the deadliest attack against Chinese security forces in recent memory: 16 policemen were killed and 16 others injured when attackers threw two grenades into a police station in the desert oasis town of Kashgar, in the far west, after driving a truck into the station at 8 a.m. Two men were arrested.

Human rights groups are expressing concerns over the clampdowns:

But human rights advocates accuse the Chinese government of using the pretext of terrorism to silence dissent and clamp down on ethnic minority groups that chafe at rule by ethnic Han Chinese, who dominate the Communist Party leadership. Some security experts say many of the surveillance measures will probably stay in place after the Games, to bolster the reach of the authorities.

Americans can hardly complain about the Chinese police state. Remember the NY Republican convention. Police set up "free speech zones", surrounded by chain link fences and plently of cops, where people were "allowed' to exercise their 1st amendment rights. Many were arrested anyway. The upcoming demo convention in Denver is being thoroughly securitized by various government agencies including the Northern Command, which of course is military. They are setting up "fusion zones" wherein the many agencies involved will coordinate information and tactics. You can bet that the security folks will say it's all in response to the threat of terrorism, which is exactly what the Chinese are saying. But 99.9% of the people who are going to be watched, taped, profiled, and almost certainly arrested will be doing nothing more than exercising their legal rights. Many Americans have no idea how much state scrutiny has increased in the past few years. It is becoming more and more difficult to practice what the Constitution preaches.

Remember when a guy was arrested in NY and the cops said he committed (whatever) - why, they even had him on video. Open-and-shut,right? Not quite...fortunately,other protestors had filmed the incident, and when the videos were compared, it became clear that the cops had EDITED their video to make him look guilty.
Another incident involved a puppet theatre group...their group had been infiltrated, they were arrested, and their puppets were confiscated and destroyed. What crime did they commit? None. You see, this all took place BEFORE THEY HAD A CHANCE TO PROTEST. That's like them arresting protestors and known "troublemakers" the night before the event. I think the puppet incident happened in 2000,when the convention was in Philadelphia,PA.
Often at large protests, plainclothes police will stir up trouble with peaceful protestors, and when they react to his provocation, the cops swoop in to start cracking heads, and the plainclothes cop slips away.
Quite literally, since Bush stole into office in the 2000 Selection, things have eroded a great deal.

I for one will have a front-row seat for the NYPD Biker Shove. Those cops show such athleticism as they stalk their prey of speeding cyclists, then time their shoves precisely as the biker hurtles past, sending them tumbling onto the stree-I mean ,track...

Yeah, the holocaust victims thought the european version of civil rights with the nazis was a real hoot, that's why they swarmed here.

And, the openness of a free [if vilified[ press and the constant struggle for civil rights leading to the nomination of a black man for president has not met with your high standards?

The IOC is just plain stupid. You can't tell me they didn't know a Beijing Olympics would be an authoritarian joke.

..

And NOW we know where Cheney got his ideas.

Isn't that what they teach you in the FIRST year of Poli-Sci? That the far Right and the far Left REQUIRE essentially the same level of control? It's been so long I don't recall.

Oh, yeah...what color of alert is America under now? Anyone care to guess? Or did the Facists drop that trope? It worked SO WELL in 2004.

I refuse to watch. And I encourage all those who disagree with Beijing's human rights policies to do the same. JUST TURN IT OFF. DON"T LET THEM BRAINWASH YOU WITH THEIR(CHINESE AND CORPORATE) PROPAGANDA.

Remember the murders at Tiananmen Square 1989.

The President trashes O. Two former President's trash O. The GOP nominee spends nearly every waking moment trashing O. Two highly paid conservative talk show hosts trash O daily, for 4 hours at a time. The entire Maverick DC Media Choir trash O. The entire GOP Congressional Choir trash O.

There are ads running 24/7 trashing O. There are reams of conservative columnists trashing O. There are viral emails.

This is "not fair" to conservatives. They're being somehow "repressed" from "dissent" on O.

I don't know: am I supposed to chip in for the attack ads? Is that what's required for this to be somehow "fair"?
