On the day that 16 Chinese police offers were killed by bomb-throwing attackers in western China, The New York Times is running a article on the "smothering blanket of security" imposed across Beijing before the Olympic Games begin Friday. According to the Times, the Chinese are warning that terrorism is a "constant threat." Read more on HuffPost's Olympics big news page.

Chinese officials have thrown an almost smothering blanket of security across this capital of 17 million in preparation for the start of the Olympic Games on Friday. Above all else, Chinese leaders say, these Olympics will be "safe."

They warn that terrorism is a constant threat, particularly from Muslim separatist groups in the Xinjiang region of western China. On Monday morning, Xinhua, the state news agency, reported what appeared to be the deadliest attack against Chinese security forces in recent memory: 16 policemen were killed and 16 others injured when attackers threw two grenades into a police station in the desert oasis town of Kashgar, in the far west, after driving a truck into the station at 8 a.m. Two men were arrested.

Human rights groups are expressing concerns over the clampdowns:

But human rights advocates accuse the Chinese government of using the pretext of terrorism to silence dissent and clamp down on ethnic minority groups that chafe at rule by ethnic Han Chinese, who dominate the Communist Party leadership. Some security experts say many of the surveillance measures will probably stay in place after the Games, to bolster the reach of the authorities.

Your use of ESOPs as an example doesn't cut it kiddo.
Posted 12:55 PM on 08/04/2008

Katboy

(let alone your ESOP example)
Posted 12:20 PM on 08/04/2008

How come neo-cons can't actually respond to an argument?

How are ESOPs not a classic example of how communism is supposed to work?

You got your response, so what are you complaining about?

ZHarris: "And how do the Chinese have a say in how the goods are distributed?"

MyOwnPerson: "They don't, nor do they own stock in the company. They don't benefit from the company's success in any way. What's your point? ESOP employees can't say how goods are distributed so this makes America the most communistic country in the world? Please! While it's not the best plan around, it certainly allows a business owner to ensure the continuity of his business and to entice his employees to make the company more profitable; and allows the employees to gain from that profitability."

How is that communism? I ask you again, what about an ESOP makes America the most communistic country in the world?

ZHarris: "How are ESOPs not a classic example of how communism is supposed to work?"

Because workers in ESOPs have the ability to profit from the plan whereas communism doesn't give squat back to the workers. The government controls production and enjoys any profit/gain in it's totality. They say how much is needed, or not needed, and the demand is met regardless of human costs.

I'm a 'neocon' because I point out that you don't know the meaning of the words you use?

Superb insight! Award yourself a cookie!

It's been explained to you that a vague hint of collective ownership does not signify 'communism' in itself, let alone qualify the US as more 'communistic' than China.

I find some irony in the fact that, had China NOT implemented this massive security and an attack had gone down--either from extremists or activists who want to use what is supposed to be a neutral, APOLITICAL event--that the headline on this site would have been "CHINA DIDN'T PROTECT THE PEOPLE. LAX SECURITY CAUSES ATTACK".

Just another day on HuffPo. BTW, what was the final death count for that quake that "rocked" California last week? You know, the one that was so huge the baseball game that night wasn't even canceled.

O is trashed nearly daily in the media. Republicans have spent in excess of 20 million dollars, devoted to trashing O. They have an entire cable news channel devoted to trashing O, and a radio program.

Is someone somewhere quashing dissent on O?

Who is that person or entity? They're doing a bad job.

"I saw Mansfield in Shanghai in May, during his first visit to China, at a dinner with a small group of conservative scholars. He was wearing a honey-colored panama and was in good spirits, though he seemed a bit puzzled by all the fuss they were making about him. His first question to the table: “Why would Chinese scholars be interested in Leo Strauss?”

Why indeed? I think US conservatives have to 'splain this.
