On the day that 16 Chinese police offers were killed by bomb-throwing attackers in western China, The New York Times is running a article on the "smothering blanket of security" imposed across Beijing before the Olympic Games begin Friday. According to the Times, the Chinese are warning that terrorism is a "constant threat." Read more on HuffPost's Olympics big news page.

Chinese officials have thrown an almost smothering blanket of security across this capital of 17 million in preparation for the start of the Olympic Games on Friday. Above all else, Chinese leaders say, these Olympics will be "safe."

They warn that terrorism is a constant threat, particularly from Muslim separatist groups in the Xinjiang region of western China. On Monday morning, Xinhua, the state news agency, reported what appeared to be the deadliest attack against Chinese security forces in recent memory: 16 policemen were killed and 16 others injured when attackers threw two grenades into a police station in the desert oasis town of Kashgar, in the far west, after driving a truck into the station at 8 a.m. Two men were arrested.

Human rights groups are expressing concerns over the clampdowns:

But human rights advocates accuse the Chinese government of using the pretext of terrorism to silence dissent and clamp down on ethnic minority groups that chafe at rule by ethnic Han Chinese, who dominate the Communist Party leadership. Some security experts say many of the surveillance measures will probably stay in place after the Games, to bolster the reach of the authorities.

I saw you dancing out the ocean
Running fast along the sand
A spirit born of earth and water
Fire flying from your hands

And all I ever needed was THE ONE
Like freedom fields where wild horses run
When stars collide like you and I
No shadows block the sun
You're all I've ever needed
Baby you're THE ONE

It scares me, because young Chinese really are turning to US neoconservatives for an ideology.

If it turns out you can have efficient markets AND a repressive regime...we're all in trouble.

If US neoconservatives are going to China at the invitation of young Chinese nationalists who support the regime, and they are, my fear is what China will teach US neoconservatives.

I think it's the other way around. The neocons are teaching China how to use fear and rhetoric to control a population while convincing them they are "Free", and the Dems are teaching them to act as though they have a protector without ever making progress.

Baloney. Picking up pointers, more likely.

A booming international marketplace with no regulation and no individual freedoms. Nothing to "impede" the money-making.

It's like a neoconservative dream come true. Free markets and...not so free men.

US conservatives should feel right at home. Actually, they ARE right at home. Weirdly, neoconservatism and the Chinese regime are a perfect fit!

Turns out, it's an ideological match made in heaven.

What do the young Chinese "nationalist" movement and US conservatives have in common?

It's an odd alliance. A little embarrassing for US neoconservatives, I would imagine.

The newest movement in China is neoconservatism. Nationalism, blind adherence to the repressive regime, suspicion of the West, a return to traditional Chinese culture.

When Chinese scholars looked for an ideological model for this, where did they end up?

At the University of Chicago.

Don't confuse democracy with markets.

The second doesn't require the first, and US conservatives are only really interested in the second.

You do remember, of course, how George W Bush and his Neo-Con buddies spent the summer before 9/11 enmeshed in threats of war against China?

The "provocation" was the collision of one of our spy planes with a Chinese fighter jet.

As I recall the Neo-Cons were debating whether that was the "right time" to take on the increasing menace of China. They wanted, or should we say, NEEDED a war. They were just not sure if China was the right war.

They settled on Iraq.

Of course nothing came of the Chinese incident. . Except Bush's National Security were so focused on that bogus issue they ignored the obvious signs of Osama Bin Ladins assault.

Trust the Republicans to protect us? What an utterly foolish idea.

Young Chinese nationalists, who support the current restrictive regime, admire and wish to emulate....US neoconservatives.

The Conservative Movement in the US is actually BUTTRESSING the repressive regime in China.

From The New Yorker:

"In their years together, Wan watched Tang fall in with a group of students devoted to a charismatic thirty-nine-year-old Fudan philosophy professor named Ding Yun. He is a translator of Leo Strauss, the political philosopher whose admirers include Harvey Mansfield and other neoconservatives. A Strauss student, Abram Shulsky, who co-authored a 1999 essay titled “Leo Strauss and the World of Intelligence (By Which We Do Not Mean Nous),” ran the Pentagon’s Office of Special Plans before the invasion of Iraq. Since then, other Strauss disciples have vigorously ridiculed suggestions of a connection between Strauss’s thought and Bush-era foreign policy.

I saw Mansfield in Shanghai in May, during his first visit to China, at a dinner with a small group of conservative scholars. He was wearing a honey-colored panama and was in good spirits, though he seemed a bit puzzled by all the fuss they were making about him. His first question to the table: “Why would Chinese scholars be interested in Leo Strauss?”

Why indeed?

LOL, before the games are over Mac will have said 10 more inaccurate statements about obama, will have embarassed himself again with his complete lack of foreign policy and will reaffirm for EVERYONE how much we now hate neo.con conservates like him.

Mac is a chicken hawk, who lashes out in anger at the drop of a hat. His ptsd shows it's ugly face nearly everyday.

If the race and counting are even remotely legal and fair(which they weren't under W), then Obama will win in a landslide and Mac and his neo.con cohorts will hopefully be consigned to the annals of history.

Keep up your trolling, it just reaffirms the idiocy we are up against.
