On the day that 16 Chinese police offers were killed by bomb-throwing attackers in western China, The New York Times is running a article on the "smothering blanket of security" imposed across Beijing before the Olympic Games begin Friday. According to the Times, the Chinese are warning that terrorism is a "constant threat." Read more on HuffPost's Olympics big news page.

Chinese officials have thrown an almost smothering blanket of security across this capital of 17 million in preparation for the start of the Olympic Games on Friday. Above all else, Chinese leaders say, these Olympics will be "safe."

They warn that terrorism is a constant threat, particularly from Muslim separatist groups in the Xinjiang region of western China. On Monday morning, Xinhua, the state news agency, reported what appeared to be the deadliest attack against Chinese security forces in recent memory: 16 policemen were killed and 16 others injured when attackers threw two grenades into a police station in the desert oasis town of Kashgar, in the far west, after driving a truck into the station at 8 a.m. Two men were arrested.

Human rights groups are expressing concerns over the clampdowns:

But human rights advocates accuse the Chinese government of using the pretext of terrorism to silence dissent and clamp down on ethnic minority groups that chafe at rule by ethnic Han Chinese, who dominate the Communist Party leadership. Some security experts say many of the surveillance measures will probably stay in place after the Games, to bolster the reach of the authorities.

C'mon folks we shouldn't be shocked that China is a brutal, undemocratic regime run by a bunch of "thugs". Dissent is not tolerated.

Oh, I don't know. We could adopt some of their policies. Like getting rid of the dissenters who constantly talk about change.

It's not so different here, from China. Dissent isn't tolerated here either. Journalists who don't tow the line are consistently blackballed. WalMart and many other American corporations are telling their employees how to vote. There are organized neighborhood groups where people are spying on each other and reporting the results to the FBI. All the news networks have decided to devote less than a few minutes a week to Iraq. Black box voting isn't safe or reliable. The Government performs renditions and torture. We are being spied on 24/7. People are thrown in jail for 25 years for merely being addicts. When you have corruption in Government, you end up with similar results.

Engagement is a better plan than constant confrontation. You catch more flies with honey ----- We should allow the Chinese to feel like part of the world community and they might begin to act like they are.

A "GIANT FORTRESS".... "AN ALMOST SMOTHERING BLANKET OF SECURITY" - Thought this headline was for a story about the coming presidential conventions.

The newest Olympic event is 'tank-standing.' You position yourself in front of a line of armored vehicles holding several shopping bags and see how long it is before someone on a bicycle whisks you away and you're never heard from again.

It really puzzles me why there are so many China bashers when in reality a large majority of Chinese citizens are happy with their country. 80+ percent of them think their country is headed in the right direction as opposed to something like ~20 percent here. It seems like a lot of people are quick to assume that the Chinese citizenry are an oppressed group burdened by their communist leaders. But why are we so quick to judge based on our own sensibilities of good government when most of them are happy? Instant change is not going to happen over there. Were so many people similarly critical of South Korea or Taiwan's dictatorships before the 90's? It would be hard to believe.

Ya get that poll out of the Xinhua Ledger?

No, it was a survey from a Western news source, although I can't find it atm. It's possible I've got the wrong figures but I remember a large disparity. You get the idea of what I'm trying to say.

They don't have polls in China!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:13 AM on 08/04/2008

#1 - stop using percentages without reporting the polls you got them from
#2 - people judge based on their sensibilities because that's how they determine what they believe is right and what's wrong ... I know this is a hard concept for some people these days
#3 - People were critical of South korea and Taiwan but not to the extent we are of China today because China could very well be the top country in the world within fifteen years ... more money than the US, larger military than India, limited space of it's citizens ... you do the math

As I said below, I seriously doubt that. +38% over 6 years is probably the result of the economy and the Olympics.

Btw, if you would actually bother to visit China or even to watch a TV special on it, it's not hard to find critical Chinese. They've got considerably more freedom to speak their minds than what you think.
