On the day that 16 Chinese police offers were killed by bomb-throwing attackers in western China, The New York Times is running a article on the "smothering blanket of security" imposed across Beijing before the Olympic Games begin Friday. According to the Times, the Chinese are warning that terrorism is a "constant threat." Read more on HuffPost's Olympics big news page.

Chinese officials have thrown an almost smothering blanket of security across this capital of 17 million in preparation for the start of the Olympic Games on Friday. Above all else, Chinese leaders say, these Olympics will be "safe."

They warn that terrorism is a constant threat, particularly from Muslim separatist groups in the Xinjiang region of western China. On Monday morning, Xinhua, the state news agency, reported what appeared to be the deadliest attack against Chinese security forces in recent memory: 16 policemen were killed and 16 others injured when attackers threw two grenades into a police station in the desert oasis town of Kashgar, in the far west, after driving a truck into the station at 8 a.m. Two men were arrested.

Human rights groups are expressing concerns over the clampdowns:

But human rights advocates accuse the Chinese government of using the pretext of terrorism to silence dissent and clamp down on ethnic minority groups that chafe at rule by ethnic Han Chinese, who dominate the Communist Party leadership. Some security experts say many of the surveillance measures will probably stay in place after the Games, to bolster the reach of the authorities.

It's not a real Walmart. The workers are unionized meaning the prices are higher.

Ah, yes!

Let the China Bashing Begin!

As someone who knows both countries, I assure you there have been much more drastic changes in abuse of citizens in the name of security in the USA than in China in the past decade.

But, hey, don't let that worry you.

This is another great chance to feel superior and self-righteous, while the Statue of Liberty sails away to sea, as Paul Simon once put it...

If you're so worried about this country, then do something about it instead of complaining. You will soon be in the same predicament as the people you are complaining about if you don't open your darn eyes!

Could you be any more vague?

What country? Do what about what? What complaint? Which people are in what predicament? What do your eyes see? Are you certain they aren't wide shut?

Bad thing about the Olympics being in China.

Five hours after the closing ceremonies, everyone is going to want more Olympics.

Heh.

The fact that most of the major events will happen in primetime doesn't hurt either---at least from the NBC-Universal standpoint.

I really look forward to a lot of the events, which are often beautiful and which make me wonder how they get their bodies to do that.

If this were being held in today's America, ie. George Bush's America, (or, indeed, John McCain's America) would it really be any different??
In operations such as this, there is no major governemental distnctions between autocratic-communist China, and the basically autocratic form of democracy run by the GOP and the war-lovers.
They are now in the same league together. .........Along with Russia, etc.etc.

My point was not even about Madam Butterfly. My point was about the Asian people on a whole who I feel are wonderful people like SOME Americans are. I just hate to see people used and abused in a so-called joke. Jokes hurt people's feelings. And I know you must know about hurt feelings especially when it's directed against any group of people.

I just read an excellent MSM review of why our current Prez has such a magnetic attraction to leaders (Putin) and countries (on his way to China) who know how to crack (skulls) down on dissidents (terrorists).

No I didn't.

I am no fan of China's human rights record but let's not be so quick to judge them because since 9-11, there seems to be very little that distinguishes Chinese human rights abuses and privacy & US human rights abuses & privacy....

Bipartisan agreement. The Chinese Communists are brutal human rights abusers. Most of the athletes are professionals. The Olympics is nothing more than another international political event meant t showcase the host country.

My office friend who was a marathoner told me that he had lost his hope of ever winning a marathon because of the "professional" runners who are able to train 24/7 while he has to hold down a full time job, and is only able to train less than 7 hours a week.

Between the doping and the sponsored professionals, where does the amateur have a chance of even representing his country?

Professionals?

You mean unlike the American basketball team, the tennis players, and all the corporate sponsored atheletes?

Amateurism left the Olympics decades ago.

When discussing almost anything, it is a decided advantage to know what you are talking about.
