NEW YORK — Though "The Dark Knight" has been a bona fide cultural event, boasting rave reviews and boffo box office, it hasn't been immune to criticism. Some have quibbled with its political undercurrents, and others have criticized a muddled theme.

But here's the critique most widely held: Why does Batman talk like the offspring of Clint Eastwood and a grizzly bear?

Donning the costume for the second time, Christian Bale has delved deeper into the lower registers. As Bruce Wayne, his voice is as smooth as his finely pressed suits. But once he puts the cape on, the transformation of his vocal chords is just as dramatic as his costume change.

Particularly when his rage boils over, Bale's Batman growls in an almost beastly fashion, reflecting how close he teeters between do-gooder and vengeance-crazed crusader.

"The Dark Knight" hauled in $43.8 million to rank as Hollywood's top movie for the third straight weekend, fending off "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," which opened a close second with $42.5 million. It has earned $394.9 million in just 17 days, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Though much of the voice effect is Bale's own doing, under the guidance of director Christopher Nolan and supervising sound editor Richard King, the frequency of his Batman voice was modulated to exaggerate the effect.

Critics and fans have noticed.

"His Batman rasps his lines in a voice that's deeper and hammier than ever," said NPR's David Edelstein.

The New Yorker's David Denby praised the urgency of Bale's Batman, but lamented that he "delivers his lines in a hoarse voice with an unvarying inflection."

Reviewing the film for MSNBC, Alonso Duralde wrote that Bale's Batman in "Batman Begins" "sounded absurdly deep, like a 10-year-old putting on an `adult' voice to make prank phone calls. This time, Bale affects an eerie rasp, somewhat akin to Brenda Vaccaro doing a Miles Davis impression."

Before the similes run too far afield, it's worth considering where the concept of a throaty Batman comes from.

In his portrayal on the `60s "Batman" TV series, Adam West didn't alter his voice between Bruce Wayne and Batman. Decades later when Tim Burton brought "Batman" to the big screen in a much darker incarnation, Michael Keaton's inflection was notably _ but not considerably _ different from one to the other.

But it was a lesser-known actor who, a few years after Burton's film, made perhaps the most distinct imprint on Batman's voice. Kevin Conroy, as the voice of the animated Batman in various projects from 1992's "Batman: The Animated Series" right up until this year's "Batman: Gotham Knight," brought a darker, raspier vocalization to Batman.

Conroy has inhabit the role longer than anyone else and though animated voice-over work doesn't have the same cachet as feature film acting, there are quarters where Conroy is viewed as the best Batman of them all _ certainly superior to Val Kilmer or George Clooney.

The animated series are notable because they drew on the DC Comics of Batman as envisioned by Frank Miller, whose work heavily informs "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight." (Bale and Nolan were unavailable to comment for this story.)

As Batman has gotten darker, his voice has gotten deeper. As some critics suggest, Bale and "The Dark Knight" may have reached a threshold, at least audibly.

well if you read the comics... especially frank millers stories, people often comment on his voice and how raspy it is. In the current line of batman comics that frank miller is writing, the story starts with batman meeting robin (i wont go into the whole story line). Anyway, in the story batman has kidnapped soon to be robin, and the boy wonder keeps saying stuff about how hes changing his voice to sound deeper and darker, hes masking...

sooo

kudos to Nolan for getting it right! and bale for doing probably the best imitation of that voice i have ever heard... besides the animated series.

No it's not ridiculous. The lack of transparenccy in the government and the fact that people in this country will actually vote for a Bush family member after al they have done to this country ; now that's RIDICULOUS.
I bet you idiots will end up choosing McCain because he is old, white and totally without vision. That's seems to be the dish on offer here. Maybe you deserve it - it took us a few centuries to emerge from the Dark Ages.

Good Luck America, and Good NIght.

More importantly, it's reaching a timbre that is distracting - you momentarily leve the plot and check the voice.
It's obvious (ok, if we're going to suspend disbelief) that Batman would have to disguise his voice, but.... enough's enough, Christian.

I just watched The Prestige last night, and I had to keep the volume control in my hand the whole time so I could try to make out Bale's lines. Jackman and Caine were fine, but Bale.....it seems like he mumbles a lot of the time. Maybe, like some singers, he loses his ability to project in the lower registers.

With all the high-tech gear Batman/Bruce Wayne has at his disposal, it would be very easy to disguise the voice electronically.

It's to scare the crap out of the people he meets -- he's supposed to be a creature of the night -- and to keep them from connecting him to Bruce Wayne.

That said, it was jarring the first time he does it in the film but you get used to it pretty quickly. The only scene where I thought it was kind of odd was when he used the voice when he was alone with Morgan Freeman's character (who knows who he really is.) But I think that's to show that he really becomes a different person when he puts on the suit.

The sonar stuff bugged me a lot more. But still an amazing epic film.

Get well soon, Mr. Freeman!

Much ado about nothing! Maybe they pushed it a little on the voice, but that's such a small part of the whole incredible movie. Give the feigned controversy a rest and let the best bat have his due.

I have no interest in Batman remakes. I stopped caring after Batman Returns.

Deep voice, high voice... I say, BIG DEAL!

The movie was amazing. My suggestion is to see the flick, enjoy it and stop picking nits.

Unless you actually draw a paycheck from the movie, your opinions are only important to you.

If we could do any better, we would be in the movie instead of writing about it.

"If we could do any better, we would be in the movie instead of writing about it."

The "can you do better?" argument is the weakest there is. The absurd implication is that unless you do something professionally you have no right to critique or comment on the performances of those who do.

I can't play the piano like Andre Watts but I can tell when he hits a wrong note. I can't play tennis like Rafa Nidal but I know when he makes a bad shot.

YES -- I did not like the voice. The one bad thing about the movie.

Otherwise it is brilliant with giving human dimenson and complexity
to cartoon characters, in a modern day, more real setting.

Loved it otherwise. Except Bale in general is not a good Batman for me.
I need good Batman lips. Bale doesn't do it for me. He's OK, but he's not the best.

I so agree with the 'lips.' Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton had the best mouths and George Clooney's was pretty good too.

The idea that the animated series or the movies drew upon Frank Miller is utterly ridiculous.

Have these people even read the garbage that Miller churns out?

Miller churns out garbage now...but his work on Daredevil and Batman in the 80's was amazing. The Dark Knight Returns pretty much redefined the dark and gritty Batman we see today, and directly inspired Tim Burton's 1989 film.

I'm glad it wasn't only me who was annoyed by the voice. Loved the movie, but he should have done something different with his voice, and I'm surprised they let it slide.

Nahh it wasn't really ridiculous.

It was certainly jarring, even seeing the movie the second time around. And stood out long after it should have faded into the background or sounded somewhat natural. But it wasn't horrible. In the end it worked.

And Batman DID have to sound different from Bruce Wayne. So I can live with it. Overall Bale did a good job. Not as good as Freeman, Caine or Oldman, but who could?

It was Ledger's movie to steal anyway, and did he ever steal it. The best performance I've seen in years! Bale was fine. Heath Ledger was brilliant.

Duh. Those costumes never really hide the superhero's true identity. Obviously, the voice is part of the attempt to convince us the disguise is so diabolically clever that no one notices it's Bruce Wayne in Bat-Drag. As if my co-worker in the next cubicle showed up with a bucket over half his head and speaking in a low growl I wouldn't go, "Dude, what the hell do you think you're doing?"

I think that in order for someone to give forth a legitimate complaint about Batman's voice, that person should have directed a movie that was better than this one. That pretty well keeps the number at less than 200 directors over the last 10 years.

By the way, was someone in this movie beside "The Joker"? I don't remember anyone else.

Kevin Conroy and the rest of the actors on Justice League made that show the best show that ever graced television.
