I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Rogers

On his website, GOP Congressman Mike Rogers encourages visitors to improve their gas mileage and fuel costs by making sure that that the tires on their cars are fully inflated. It is a rational plan, he freely admits, and an effective way to help constituents save a few bucks.

"There are certain things that we as individuals can do to try and lower our costs," Rogers said on Monday. "And inflating your tires is a good thing."

The problem is that Sen. Barack Obama has also encouraged drivers to inflate their tires. And in this hyper-political environment -- when the Republican Party is handing out tire gauges to mock the Illinois Democrat as out of touch on energy needs -- Rogers now has to criticize the Democratic nominee for backing the same position.

So what did Rogers come up with? A fairly lame rationale, that tire efficiency is an appropriate proposal if it comes from a mere member of Congress but something unbecoming of a presidential candidate.

"If he is going to be President of the United States and talking about energy policy, I'm not sure inflating tires is where he should spend his time," Rogers said on an RNC conference call. "It is a great way to fill a few minutes in a speech that won't really have the impact on the American people that we need to. Again, it is one of those very populist things that, instead of being a service as it was intended on sites like mine, it becomes part of his energy policy. And that is a sham on the American public. It is not an energy policy."

Of course, Obama never said it was an energy policy. A simple line from an 8,000-word speech, his call for drivers to inflate their tires actually echoed similar calls from such "populist figures" as Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Florida Gov. Charlie Christ, and NASCAR. And it's smart too. According to the Energy Information Administration, tire efficiency could save approximately 800,000 barrels of oil a day immediately, compared to the 200,000 barrels a day that would come in the year 2030 if the U.S. were to open up the "lower-48" outer continental shelf to off-shore drilling.

When Rogers was crafting his own web page, he likely didn't gloss over these details. But as a surrogate for McCain, the congressman dealt more with clichés than facts. Before discussing tire efficiency, Rogers somehow suggested that the Senator's energy policy would lead to an increase in taxes on clothing and education. Seriously. Follow the bouncing ball:

"[Obama's energy plan] is a tax and punish approach to try and get us to a better place. And I think that is contrary to the absolute devastation that our small communities and middle class families are facing with high-energy prices," said the congressman. "The problem is, our food costs are going up. Does that mean that farmers are next? Is he going to tax them more to make sure that he can offset the higher cost from his own policy position for food? My clothes costs are going up, my kid's clothes costs are going up. Education costs are going up because there is no comprehensive short and long term energy plan on the table, and he certainly didn't give us any short-term relief plan other than some very populist position. But you can imagine where that ends. I'm going to tax farmers more and give that away. I'm going to tax consumers of schools away and give that to somebody, we are not sure who that is. And so when you add up all of the costs where he wants to apply taxes to the energy sector, the biggest losers are people who are playing by the rules today."

This nut is saying it's ok for him to say "do your part" but he, the president, NASCAR, and the EIA can say "you can do your part" to get better gas mileage but the dem nominee suggest to U S citizens to do the same? Or it's laughed at or mocked when Obama suggest it. Jeez, what else should I do that a mere congressman suggests that nominee for president can't suggest? The congressman''s own current president has suggested the same thing. I suppose George W shouldn't make that suggestion either

All Rogers is saying is what the GOP and the MSM have been saying all along which is that,
For Obama,The standard should be higher.

How is this not adhering to a higher standard? The practice itself is endorsed by the EIA.

I am saying the election is so biase against Obama that,it is acceptable when Mc Cain or a GOP person says rubbish and even when Obama talks sense,it is still not good enough.

Its like sitting in a class room, and u get fired at when ever u score a B,meanwhile others never even managed a pass and no one seem to pay attention to them.

Hello, I am three years old (in maturity) and I am going to talk to you about energy, which is appropriate for some people but not others. No matter, you don't think or research things as a low information voter. so you will fall for it.

So let's see: if the Obama backs the opposite position -whatever their position is, attack him for backing the opposite position. If Obama backs the same position -especially if he did it before you did -attack him for backing the same position (I guess that makes him a "premtive copycat").

Calling all democratic 527's -it's time to ignore Obama and go to DEFCON 1. He's not going to get this done taking the high road.

This is the problem with people who follow talking points without breaking out the old calculator. According conservatively to the USDOE, US drivers waste roughly 3.56million gallons of gas DAILY due to under-inflated tires. That’s roughly 1.3billion gallons per year. At 2.1gallons of oil to make one gallon of gasoline it takes 2.73billion gallons of oil to produce the WASTED gasoline. That means 65million barrels (42 gallons to a barrel) WASTED. That works out to 178,000barrels daily … roughly 1% of the US consumption. These are probably the most conservative numbers.
Before anyone starts shouting, "See Obama doesn't get it," take a look at another number: 200,000barrels daily. This is the amount estimated by BUSH's administration as to the amount of increased oil production achievable by 2030 with the expanded offshore drilling that McCain and some Repubs/Dems are pushing.
Looks like Obama HAS thought things out. He calls on Americans to take a greater role in addressing the price issues by doing something for themselves rather than solely depending/trusting the government/business to fix things for them. It reduces dependence, reduces costs for the average Joe on the street, and helps the environment.
Take a look at what Time says: http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1829354,00.html?cnn=yes.

Maybe now people will realize how evil and ignorant Ronald Reagan's trashing of President Jimmy Carter's energy policy was. CAFE standards went from 16 to 28 MPG (that may not be exact, but it is close) when the Peanut Man was in office. They could be 42 MPH or better by now.

Cut to 2008 and this cretin Rogers wants to trash Senator Obama for giving people a common sense gas mileage tip--the same tip that he is giving. The GOP is truly in Bizzaro World. I can't wait until November 4th!

When gas hit $4 a gallon, I started doing three things:

1. Keeping the tires properly inflated.
2. Driving the 55 mph speed limit (yes, in the far right lane)
3. Training myself to stop with the jackrabbit starts.

My regular commuting to work mileage increased by 32%.

I figure that's a pretty significant savings and if we all did things like that, it might keep the prices down a bit.

its an addicting game to play. My mileage is up from 31 to 39.4 mpg .... You're right, though, if everyone played our game, demand will decrease noticably.

I'm with you, taking a bit longer to get places, planning my trips, silly things like writing a list of what I need so I do not have to run back for milk, more neighborhood store shopping and YES! I do notice the savings but then I have a pretty efficient ride to start with.

This is an opportunity to do our part on things that we have control of and Sen McCain has missed the boat on this one and I hope Sen Obama calls him out on it.

When I listen to these GOP speaks and listen to McCain's ad, they completely twist the basic truth and simple principles of life and how things work.

Comparing Obama's ad to those of McCain is like comparing day & night, Obama recent Energy Ads, cites references when he was dealing with McCain's comments and voting records on the contrary, McCain's ad are twisted piece of junk.

Sometime, I wonder who actually vote for these people? Then I begin to think about the illiteracy level in this country. As more and more Americans seek knowledge and get educated, less and GOP candidates will see themselves in public offices. The only thing that might save the GOP is when they start shoting straight and start telling basic truths.

I just read Obama's 8 page energy policy, and oh Boy! he nailed it, short-term, mid-term and long-term plans are all there. But do not be deceived, the GOP with no plans are going to piece the plans to piece and tell us a thousand and one reasons why it is unachievable.

Congress - not the President - is responsible for crafting and legislating a national energy policy.

The Congress - including this idjit - completely failed in this responsibility for the six years it was controlled by Republicans, and to this day.

As Rogers says, "And that is a sham on the American public. It is not an energy policy."

They could not even ensure Americans inflate their tires properly.
