Barack Obama goes on the attack with a new ad tying John McCain to big oil:

The ad is timed to coincide with the announcement of his New Energy for America Plan, which would give middle class families a $1,000 rebate funded by a windfall profits tax on oil companies.

Anncr VO: Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets.

Now Big Oil's filling John McCain's campaign with 2 million dollars in contributions.

Because instead of taxing their windfall profits to help drivers, McCain wants to give them another 4 billion in tax breaks.

After one president in the pocket of big oil... We can't afford another.

Barack Obama... A windfall profits tax on big oil to give families a thousand dollar rebate.

A president who'll stand up for you.

The problem with Obama's ads are they're too conventional. They don't have that "outside the box" thinking that a lot of the GOP ads have. I just don't know if something like this resonates.

I think this windfall profits tax is a very bad idea. What is Obama? The next Hugo Chavez? Take away the ridiculous subsidies paid to the oil companies, but to tax "windfall profits" smacks of communism. Yes, I agree the oil companies should not be permitted to drill in the Alaska Wildlife Refuge. Yes, I believe that it is vitally important to develop renewable sources of energy like wind and solar. But when you retroactively tax windfall profits, you are sending the wrong message to American's and investors. You are in effect saying, "Don't get too successful or make too much money otherwise we will come along and confiscate your profits." That is the wrong message to be sending to the business community. Who ever suggested this idea should be fired. It WILL NOT DO OBAMA ANY GOOD.
