Barack Obama goes on the attack with a new ad tying John McCain to big oil:

The ad is timed to coincide with the announcement of his New Energy for America Plan, which would give middle class families a $1,000 rebate funded by a windfall profits tax on oil companies.

Transcript:

Anncr VO: Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets.

Now Big Oil's filling John McCain's campaign with 2 million dollars in contributions.

Because instead of taxing their windfall profits to help drivers, McCain wants to give them another 4 billion in tax breaks.

After one president in the pocket of big oil... We can't afford another.

Barack Obama... A windfall profits tax on big oil to give families a thousand dollar rebate.

A president who'll stand up for you.

Barack VO: I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message.

QUESTION FOR THOSE WHO SUPPORT OIL COMPANIES GETTING MORE LAND FOR DRILLING?

With the record profits they are making with the supply of oil being low and demand high, do you believe they are going to want to drill in these places now to help lower your cost of gas?

Wake up idiots!!!

Why do you think they gave approximately 2 million dollars to the McCain Campaign from June to July, when he came forward with his plan for offshore drilling?

What is absolutely astounding about the ads coming out of the McCain machine is the total lack of intelligence exhibited therein.

I do not think that 5 1/2 years as a POW is an enlightening, expanding experience.

John McCain is not a friend of mine. Any human that will risk the health and safety of my sons and daughters into future untold generations for military games is no friend of mine. I reject him and his lines if thought.

Would be better if it wasn't hypocrisy. And before you jump all over me, I didn't like the "The One" ad either because the comments were taken out of context, and misleading. I imagine though, that it will be a very dirty campaign, oh well.

From a ABC news article:

.....after all it was Senator Obama, not John McCain, who voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill that was a sweetheart deal for oil companies. Also not mentioned is the $400,000 from big oil contributors that Barack Obama has already pocketed in this election."

Finally hitting back.

The commercial McCain has of Obama, Paris and Brittney is effective. I would like to see Obama respond with a commercial of McCain, Chuck Norris and Wilford Brimley.

Well, the next ad should be about McCain's no plan for social security privatization without a thought on his paper. All McCain knows how to do is attack so he can just bypass the issues.

I am a big 0bama supporter, but I strongly disagree with any "windfall profits tax." It's a slippery slope that any business owner should be mortified by.

What we need to do is END the handouts to oil companies, they clearly have enough money to pay for their own research and drilling.

Don't tax them more, just stop the handouts.

I agree with you there. Windfall taxes are just another thing to encourage companies to move elsewhere.
How about getting the oil companies to keep the oil they drill in America... IN AMERICA. There is nothing keeping them from selling it to other countries and some estimates have it at nearly %60.

Move elsewhere?
Where?

In most of the world big oil is nationalized.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:37 PM on 08/04/2008

Indeed. Even the idea probably hurts the economy. (Can you hear people calling their brokers yet?) And then he complains that the oil companies are donating to McCain - well, duh, you're threating to tax them 'specially hard. The only reason this ad gives me to vote Obama is that he will give me $1000!

One thing to consider though, is that people are so desperate for immediate relief that they are actually listening to terrible ideas like off shore drilling and nodding their heads. People are hurting.

I think Obama is being smart. He knows it all has to be restructured (like the handouts to big oil) but in the meantime people really do chirk right up at the idea of some help right now. And if the oil companies are profiting from people's desperation, then make them share. It beats a stupid lie that passes for help like the gas tax pander.

I agree with you though that the long term solution requires stopping those oil company handouts.

I say tie it in with the offshore drilling. If big oil wants to drill, then we'll give it to them IF and ONLY IF they pay the taxes.

That's what his proposal is about.

Well he already said he was going to close loopholes and end handouts. But if the right consistently proposes oil drilling and the left proposes NOTHING, who wins? Windfall profits tax has been stated as lacking and that it wouldn't work. But we KNOW gas tax holidays and oil drilling won't immediately do anything. The problem is the RETHUGLICANS have cost americans millions in gas and DEMOCRATS are being blame for it. The fact is if O doesn't propose more short term relief, he suffers. Americans are saying they want to drill and don't even realize that not only is this NOT a short term solution, there are costs that outweigh benefits. Americans want instant relief but it's not going to happen.
