Bush: "Really Hard To Tell" If China Has Improved Civil Rights

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Aug. 4 -- Three days before he is set to arrive in Beijing for the Olympics, President Bush offered a mixed assessment of China's role in the world, praising its efforts to curb the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Iran, expressing disappointment about its recent move to help scuttle global trade talks, and saying that it is "really hard to tell" whether human rights in China have improved over the past eight years.

Bush said that he speaks candidly with Chinese President Hu Jintao about human rights, particularly religious freedom, and that he has shared his religious beliefs with Hu and Hu's predecessor, Jiang Zemin, urging them to lift restrictions on underground churches.

My favorite part of the article:

Asked whether he thinks he is making an impact on Hu, he [Bush] replied: "Oh, I think he listens, absolutely. I think he's interested. . . . He absorbs, he takes in, he listens."

Later, Bush went on to explain that Hu posseses eardrums and that sound, in the form of a wave, makes its way into the ear and vibrates the tympanic membrane.

China is without doubt the largest state sponsor of terrorism but not only do we not say a peep about their nuclear arsenal (the size of which is a mystery) we let them host an Olympics. Does this have something to do with the fact that under responsible Republican fiscal policy we have come to the point where their money is propping up our economy? I get so sick of Bush and McSurge talking about independence from foreign oil. What about independence from foreign ownership? How much Chinese money, exactly, is in our economy? What is the interest we're paying on the loans. It is so hypocritical to deride Obama for talking about being a citizen of the world when if it were not for foreign loans to and investments in this country, we would be in a state of complete economic and social breakdown. McSurge is handing out tire gauges with O's name on them and W is presiding over T-ball. This is not he infantile leadership we deserve.

"We" have every right to tell the rest of the world what to do, what's right and what's wrong, and how much of their productivity and resources belong to "Us."

Maybe for GB it is hard to really be sure of anything because he seemed to be quite
surprised when the price of gas went over the $4 mark. In the rest of the world we are
quite sure that China has not improved "civil rights" for their people nor will they as
long as the countries with any real influence with the Chinese government, continue
to refuse to put any pressure on them to do so.
