TOKYO — Two Japanese journalists were briefly detained and beaten by police in western China, their companies and one of the men said Tuesday, triggering a protest by the Japanese government. Chinese officials later apologized.

They were working in Xinjiang at the scene of a deadly attack Monday on Chinese policemen when they were forcibly taken to a border police facility, said Shinji Katsuta, a reporter for Japanese broadcaster Nippon Television Network Corp.

"My face was pushed into the ground, my arm was twisted and I was hit two or three times in the face," he said in a phone interview broadcast on his station.

A photographer from the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper, Shinzou Kawakita, was also apprehended and roughed up, said a company spokesman who declined to give his name, citing company policy.

The incident, which Katsuta said also involved several reporters from other countries, occurred just four days before the Beijing Olympics' opening ceremony on Friday.

The men were held for about two hours, then taken to their hotel and questioned by local authorities before being released early Tuesday morning. Later Tuesday, local officials apologized for the incident to them and other foreign reporters that had also been involved, a spokesman at their companies said.

Katsuta had no serious injuries and planned to continue working in Xinjiang, said Nippon Television spokesman Kenji Chikata. He said the company also plans to file a complaint with the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo.

The Tokyo Shimbun spokesman couldn't immediately confirm Kawakita's condition.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura, the country's top spokesman, told reporters at a regular press conference that Tokyo plans to "lodge a strong protest" with Beijing over the incident.

The reporters were in Xinjiang to report on an attack by two men from a mainly Muslim ethnic group, who rammed a truck and hurled explosives at jogging policemen Monday, killing 16. It was the most brazen and deadly attack in China's restive far west in years.

Chinese authorities have promised freedom for foreign news organizations in the country during the Olympics. But many have met with problems, including authorities cutting off live broadcasts, restrictions on reporters' movement and coverage, and Internet censorship imposed on journalists.

"Chinese authorities have promised freedom for foreign news organizations in the country during the Olympics."

Yeah, well, if it wasn't clear from day one that "freedom" would be limited to Olympics coverage and would NEVER be applied to Chinese political protests, etc., it sure is now. And great for Japan-Sino relations too, huh?

It's tough to tell how China's coming on that democracy thing, isn't it? Ask George, he sees into people's hearts, and gizzards.

This whole anti-China campaign is becoming a joke.

Amnesty International is asking George Bush to speak out on the home page of huffington, I could just burst into laughter.

The guy responsible for Guantanamo, Patriot Act, the breakdown of the Justice Department (I strongly suspect), Iraq (an illegal war), the reduction of the budget for veteran hospitals (another form of human torture I say)...should speak against China on its human rights record.

LOL........

Bush will not speak out against China , Corporations are making a mint by using their cheap labor and tax welfare from their movement for U.S.to China.
Just wait till the corporations that are buying our country , begin a more serious move by taken over our roads , bridges and other public land and resources.
People have called Bush dumb , but Cheney behind the scenes have been stealing our wealth , democracy , freedom and changing our law so our states can no longer function and run them , so they will be sold off to private corporations like Bush's fathers Carthle group , which will include their business partners overseas like Saudi Arabia , Britain , China , India and Dubai the Arbria countries.

Have you heard of something called an ad hominem attack? That is when you try to dodge the point of a debate by making the messenger the issue rather than the substance of what they're saying.

Bush isn't the only one calling China out (though he has been doing so in a mealymouthed way). I have been too and will boycott watching the olympics for the first time in my life. That some people attempt to trivialize the depredations of a brutal regime by attempting to call someone else out for their peccadilloes isn't just delusional, but also lends more credibility to the wrongdoing of nations such as China.

And as bad as Bush has been, and I hate his guts like nobody's business, he is a pussycat compared to the barbarians in the Chinese Politburo.

Seriously, whose bright idea was it to give China the Olympics in the first place? Even Adolf Hitler didn't allow foreign journalists to be beaten and people weren't choking on pollution while watching the games in Nazi Germany. Who'd have thought that Hitler would host cleaner, more diplomatic and democratic Olympic games than China? You've got to really suck to sink lower than Hitler.

Other than the fact that they make really delicious food, was this slimy beacon of brutal repression, censorship, poisonous pet food, lead-laced toys, forced abortion and sweatshop labor really the best the Olympic Committee could do? If the point of hosting the Olympics was to improve China's international image, it failed MISERABLY!!! All China has managed to do is spotlight the fact that its government is cruel, oppressive and quite possibly even more greedy, evil, corrupt and grossly incompetent than the Bush Administration.

Oops, did I just criticize my own government online? Yes I did, because I'm free to say what I like. So to all the Chinese government trolls attempting to squash criticism on this blog: Until your citizens can read, write and think what they like, enjoy the free flow of information online and speak out against government incompetence without fear of reprisal, your country SUCKS and doesn't deserve these games. Dissent is a human right and the responsibility of any patriot, regardless of nationality. Nothing ever gets fixed if you're not allowed to complain that it's broken.

Ever notice that negative articles about China are invariably commented on by a number of suspect posters? These people give themselves away as Chinese government hacks in a number of ways. Their English is a little "off" in a subtle but detectable way, including grammatical errors. They use phrases and words that borrow from Chinese government propaganda (i.e. "meddlers" and "colonialist Americans", "rude FOREIGN journalists"). They spread ridiculous propaganda only seen in Chinese papers (all told by the Chinese government what to print), such as the idea of massive arrest and detention of journalists in America.

The Chinese government has massive resources dedicated to undermining the free world. They are using the very advantages of liberty, such as an open and free internet, to undermine that same liberty. They are attempting to undermine American will in order to maintain their tyranny at home and build their power.

The Chinese government is not above committing these violent acts themselves, then blaming "terrorists". In the eyes of this tyrannical government the sacrifice of a few citizens in order to maintain power is a reasonable trade off. How better to justify a pre-Olympic crackdown and further subjugate their people? Nothing works better than terrorism. In this way, they take a page from another authoritarian government run by zealots:

"Terrorism is the best political weapon for nothing drives people harder than a fear of sudden death". - Adolph Hitler

Boycott the Olympics. The Beijing Olympics is the modern equivalent of the 1932 Berlin Olympics under the Nazi government.

I bet this wouldn't happen if they had the games in Chicago (in 2016). Why is it that the Olympic powers are making Chicago jump through all these "hoops" to be awarded the games and yet they let China, with all the pollution and political issues, host the games.

Because the US hosts an Olympic games about once every 10 years? On top of that, they know that the Olympics create massive revenue and the opportunity for huge infrastructure projects for US host cities (look at the post '96 boom in Atlanta).
