Rally

Yesterday evening John McCain took part in the Sturgis Rally 2008 at Buffalo Chip in South Dakota, an annual tribute to veterans. The candidate was so enthused, he told attendees, that he encouraged his wife to participate in the festivities: "I told her with a little luck, she could be the only woman ever to serve as both the first lady and Miss Buffalo Chip."

As the Huffington Post reported on Sunday, the Miss Buffalo Chip contest is more than a little risque -- not to mention bedeviled by violence:

ESPN's Jim Caple described the as "essentially a topless beauty pageant. And occasionally bottomless, too."

"During a drenching rain Wednesday night, the contest broke up into smaller groups and one woman wound up dancing naked on a bar top. Her boyfriend/husband saw her and angrily dragged her away as she struggled to put her pants back on and muttered something about how, "It's only this one week a year."

How sweet. Sadly, the pageant also sees its share of domestic abuse, which even the event's organizers admit to Caple is a major problem.

Here are some videos from last year's contest (warning: probably NSFW or young readers).

The wet t-shirt contest:

The pickle-licking contest:

While I don't have firsthand knowledge of these Sturgis events I do have a lot of knowledge of them from knowing someone who has attended several and seeing plenty of photos taken from these events. And while lots of professional men now own Harleys and go to these events, for the most part Sturgis is no more than a drunken and drug filled free for all. The place is filled with lowlifes and very sleazy people. There are usually several deaths from accidents at every one of these events. There is always lots of public nudity with women taking off clothing while parading around the town and allowing men to photograph them. Sturgis should be the very last place anyone would want to be seen at with Presidential ambitions.

The fact that John McCain would actually choose to be there during this time not only shows how desperate he is to appear before a larger crowd than he could ever draw on his own, but that he is totally out of touch with the real world and his base. If I were the Obama campaign I would make sure lots of photos of McCain at Sturgis were seen by the religious right letting them know this is McCain's new base.

As for Mrs. Buffalo Chips with her past history of drug and painkiller abuse, she should fit right in.

A festival that exploits women, and incites domestic abuse. Can someone please explain to me why a Presidential candidate would support such an event?

There's your guy, PUMAs, have at him, he's got your women's rights, Riiiiiiight Here!

If anyone has ever had a homecoming of troops who are family members in either the Iraq or Afghan conflicts, many of the same people who were here (the Freedom Riders) give out free coffee mugs and shirts that say "THANK YOU," and escort the troop buses from their airports to their armories, and in local parades, and I can attest to being to 2 of them within the midwest.

One bad egg, doesn't represent the entire batch, etc. sure, you are going to get some people who only go to this even to party, or show off their bikes, or keep to themselves and stay at a campsite.

Of course, I challenge you to see some of the bad eggs that have popped up in the Obama campaign, some have been pretty bad. But I guess, you never heard Obama say that "Israel is Israel's best friend," while in Isreal...

I'm sure he meant to say The US is Israel's best friend, which we are. However, you didn't see that on the news, you either heard that from me or saw it on comedy central, it seems the media that favors Obama even covers his mistakes without them ever hitting the airwaves despite an armada of reporters attached at his hip on a Europe-Asia tour.

I went to an Iraq war funeral recently. There was a biker group there. I will admit that it was touching, since I am a vet and almost all of them were also vets. However, as touching as it was, NOT ONE of them would have been out of place at Sturgis, and many were proudly admitting that they were going! Furthermore, in talking to these vets, who seem to be in support of the troops, not a single one of the more than 50 at the funeral wanted to end the Iraq war and bring our troops home!

Until you get something that tops CBS replacing McCain's factually incorrect answer to a question, in which he said Obama didn't understand the situation of the surge, with a simi-lucide answer from another question in the editing room, an edit that was only revealed thanks to Kieth O's research team, dont talk to me about media bias. And i did see Obama's misstatement covered in MSM, and if you take issue with an Obama gaff that amounts to a truism (cause Israel is Israel's best friend), then Im sure McCain lost your vote when he couldn't tell sunnie and shite three times in one week or more recently when he though Iraq shared a border with Pakistan.

OMG equating a verbal gaffe with offering the mother of your children to this throng!

You absolutely cannot be serious!

Keep looking away! It's easier to rationalize than face the truth.

McC COULD have made it a point to be seen with the freedom riders, but instead he chose to jump onto the buffalo chips stage ahead of kid rock and offer his wife up to the crowd as a contestant in a sleezy competition involving nudity and phallic symbols. the stumbling around with the American language is sadly becoming a repub prerequisite for the job.

McCain , he wants to be the king of the Capitalist. But He wants to socialize his woman's body.
Or, may be it is a fantasy of a Ex-POW.
Or he is at the age of talking more than doing.
Or, he is all of the above. Then he is a real GOP candidate for presidency. UNBELIEVABLE.
American voters try your luck.

John McCain is imitating Hillarys "I can relate to you cause I drink beer and shoot whisky" model to the extremes. He's just to stupid to understand when to stop.

Good Lord!!!! Miss Buffalo Chip McCain? I guess since since she's content to always walk a step behind. I think it's sad to see a woman allow her husband to treat her this way. These people seriously need to come into the 21st century.

I noticed that also. Obama, like a gentleman, allows his wife to precede him, through a door, off the stage etc. McCain however, walks off and leaves his poor wife to shuffle along behind him.

Wow. How do the pumas justify their votes now?

And.... he's there at these events and I have to wonder just how many of these people vote? Makes you really wonder how women in his home state are treated....

Had Barack Obama made an appearance in such a place, his candidacy would be over!
Such is the despicable double standard, that McBush won't even get a slap on the wrist.

Unfortunately, I just spent some time on the ABC News blog about McCain's Miss Buffalo Chip scandal, and was exposed to the most hateful comments I've seen in years. It made me truly appreciate HuffPo again - after being so disenchanted with its fascistic moderation system. Certain types of people are attracted to particular sites. HuffPo clearly attracts classier people (even classier trolls) than ABC News and to a lesser extent Politico. For that I am grateful.

I love how the Republican candidate was wildly popular at such an event - and the Republicans and the religious right keep saying it's the gays and the feminists and outspoken women like Michelle Obama that threaten civil society. The best woman is a submissive one, whether she's learning abstinence-only and wearing a purity ring her father gave her or a domestic abuse victim at a drunken beauty pageant, right boys?
