Sexual Harassment

A woman seeking to become only the third woman ever to successfully bring a sexual harassment case in Russia was dealt a shocking rebuke when the judge threw out her case, ruling that sexual harassment is actually necessary for the survival of the human race:

She alleged she had been locked out of her office after she refused to have intimate relations with her 47-year-old boss.

"He always demanded that female workers signalled to him with their eyes that they desperately wanted to be laid on the boardroom table as soon as he gave the word," she earlier told the court. "I didn't realise at first that he wasn't speaking metaphorically."

The judge said he threw out the case not through lack of evidence but because the employer had acted gallantly rather than criminally.

"If we had no sexual harassment we would have no children," the judge ruled.

Foreign Policy's blog notes that while Russia has made it a major priority to reverse the nation's population decline, this is perhaps not the best way to go about it, considering how dismal working conditions are for Russian women already:

According to a recent survey, 100 percent of female professionals said they had been subjected to sexual harassment by their bosses, 32 percent said they had had intercourse with them at least once and another seven percent claimed to have been raped.

Hardcore free-market capitalism is a scary thing.

No wonder the Russians are so nostalgic for the old U.S.S.R.

This judge is beneath contempt.

Although Russia's population is declining, the biggest problem facing the countries of the former Soviet Union is taking care of the children they already have. According to Human Rights Watch, children are abandoned to the state at the rate of 100,000 per year to live in depressing, dehumanizing, and often cruel orphanages.

I have just a bit of personal experience in this area, having adopted two older sisters from an orphanage in Ukraine, where the situation is about the same as in Russia. They have scars from beatings and wish that the worst of their caretakers were in prison. Had we not adopted them, they would have been put on the streets at age 16, most likely to a future of vodka, heroin, and prostitution. For children such as these, the only hope is to be adopted by a family from Western Europe or America. When we made our visits to the orphanage, a heartbreaking number of children approached our translator, begging to be adopted. Even so, adoption is risky for all and often does not have a happy ending. Thankfully, our daughters are doing well.

So, having seen the darker side of child care in the former Soviet Union, I can say that there is truly nothing funny about this case.

People who live in a house of glass should not throw stones at others. Look at your own society and the millions of abandoned children running around in the inner cities of your own country. But you wouldn't adopt those, do you? You and I and the rest of the world know why.

So why don't you shot-up and clean your own house and mind your own business.

Yes, the United States does have many problems with child care: inadequate support for low-income families, overstressed foster care systems, a harsh, punitive approach to juvenile crime, a lack of good nationwide statistics... But to suggest that our inner cities have millions of abandoned children running around is comical.

There are not millions of abandoned children running around in the inner cities of the USA. There are few if any.

Um, no, we have NOTHING here like what they have there. I'm not suggesting there are no gender discrimination and sexual harassment problems in America, but it's NOTHING like what it is in Russia. Men can pretty much do whatever they want to a woman, including rape her, and 99% of the time will not get in trouble.

It seems that in the modern Russia---life for most is pretty cheap anyhow----and women are at the bottom of the rung-----but as others have noted---that neanderthal way of thinking as shown by that judge is not all that unusual here--I could see some judge here making the same sort of statement and ruling if he thought he could get away with it.

When I was in court seeking to have my temporary restraining order on my (now ex) husband for domestic violence, I was addressed by the judge as follows:

"What do you want a restraining order for? It says here he hasn't hit you in almost a month!"

This despite death threats from my then-husband to me and his recent purchase of a handgun.

I hope that you filed a formal complaint against this judge. If your attorney did not file a complaint, contact your state bar association and get things moving. Gloria Alred might like to hear from you.
