A House Republican leader is lambasting President Bush on his decision not to call Congress back into session to deal with the energy crisis.

In a legislative update sent to GOP members and staff on Tuesday, Republican House Policy Committee Chairman Thaddeus McCotter (Mich.) accused "Beijing George" Bush of throwing House Republicans "under the bone-dry bus" on his way to the Olympics in China.

House GOP leaders last week called on Bush to convene an emergency session ofCongress, but the White House said such a move would not make a difference because Democrats would not call for an up-or-down vote on offshore drilling legislation.

McCotter, known for his frank and sometimes unusual political opinions, was not pleased with that decision. His memo stated, "Today, in his final term, the wildly unpopular President George W. Bush boarded Air Force One bound for the Beijing Olympics and a meeting with his chum Hu Jintao, the dapper ruler of a nuclear armed, communist dictatorship. ... Perhaps our Compassionate Conservative-in-Chief will bring our absent Democrat Congress some 'Made in (communist) China' souvenir t-shirts: 'Bush went to Beijing and all I got was this lousy five week, paid vacation.' "

It only took 93 months for a Republican to criticize his leader on energy policy. Who says that Republicans are unaccountable? 90 days before an election while Congress is in reces is exactly the right time to be bringing up something like this.

My rep and both senators are republican and they never listen to anyone that doesn't have a big check for them!
The oil companies want the land not the oil. They just want to keep someone else from getting it and maybe messing up their little shell game they have got going.
When I talk to my reps I will tell them no offshore drilling no anwar we don't need it!
We need more renuable sorces of energy. If we had done what Jimmy Carter wanted us to do we would have been free of OPEC oil today, but proplr like bush/chenny and the republican party have done what they always do. Make a great big filthy mess of things.
Folks if you don't send these idiot republicans packing they will totally destroy America!

Beijing George's, now there's a name for a chain of Chinese takeout stores. Or, how about, Beijing John's? I'd buy a franchise if it was cheap enough.

Yes, with a seven year lead time another few weeks is going to make all the difference to get a small amount of oil which will have no impact.

The reason why the president did not call the congress back into session is that the democrats would not let him have the right to write the oil leases with no strings attached. No, the democrats would go ahead and want to add environmental protections and alternative enegry credits and possible even getting rid of tax breaks for the oil companies in order to pay for the alternative energy investment. They might even put a 'use it or lose it' provision on existing leases.

That would put Bush in the uncomfortable position of having to veto it. His whole reason for pushing for leases is so that the can give no-strings leases to his oil patch buddies as a going away present.

Can we PLEASE retire the saying:

"thrown under the bus"?

Jesus Christ, it is so freaking ANNOYING!

Anyone who says "...thrown us under the bus..." should get an automatic
10 day jail sentence for being such a ridiculous tool.

I agree with you on the bus thing... just like the often used and now seemingly abandoned "full throated" term.... :)
