HOUSTON — A jury was seated Wednesday in a lawsuit alleging the wife of nationally known pastor Joel Osteen assaulted a flight attendant.

Opening arguments were set for Thursday in a case Victoria Osteen's lawyer called "silly." But Reginald McKamie, attorney for Continental Airlines flight attendant Sharon Brown, said he hopes the trial will show "that celebrity status doesn't take precedence."

Brown accuses Victoria Osteen of assaulting her before the start of a 2005 flight from Houston to Vail, Colo. Brown alleges Victoria Osteen threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the left breast during an angry outburst over a stain on her first-class seat. The Federal Aviation Administration fined Victoria Osteen $3,000 for interfering with a crew member.

Joel Osteen was at his wife's side Wednesday in court. McKamie said he expected to call the couple as witnesses.

Joel Osteen preaches at Lakewood Church, a Houston megachurch where about 42,000 people flock each week and where Victoria Osteen is co-pastor. His weekly television address is broadcast nationally and internationally.

Some potential jurors during questioning admitted to being star-struck by the Osteens and that their respect for them might affect their judgment.

"He has gotten me through a lot of tough times. I would believe what he has to say. I have a lot of respect for him," one female in the jury pool said.

Other potential jurors said they didn't like preachers or televangelists and that ministers can lie.

Brown wants an apology and punitive damages amounting to 10 percent of Victoria Osteen's net worth as part of her suit.

Victoria Osteen's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said before jury selection began Wednesday that Brown's claims are false and that what happened was a "minor incident." Hardin also asked a judge to throw out an FAA report detailing the alleged incident, saying the agency's investigation was "incredibly incomplete."

"This is a very silly case," Hardin told reporters.

McKamie said the FAA did an appropriate investigation. State District Judge Patricia Hancock said she would make a decision later on whether the report would be allowed.

Brown's suit claims the flight attendants asked to have Victoria Osteen removed from the plane. Hardin says Victoria Osteen and her family left voluntarily. The incident delayed the flight about 2 1/2 hours.

According to court documents, Brown claims that she suffers from anxiety and hemorrhoids because of the incident and said her faith was affected. She is also suing Osteen for medical expenses for counseling.

Brown had previously claimed she was attacked in another incident by an airport employee, according to a deposition she gave in the case.

Don't know what to make of this except after many incidents in recent years like this, one thing always rings true.....

.....when in doubt, the flight attendents ALWAYS claim the person was either trying to open a door, or trying to enter the cockpit.

Why is it the incidents are never about anything else, like a good old fist fight or simply cussing someone out?? Or stopping up the toilet and making people suffer in the funk for hours??

Hay, God picked her, or, vice versa. So that gives her the right to be aggressive and rude.

They always seemed like the perfect evangelical couple without any scandals lurking in the closet. I know, an oxymoron. Of course this guy isn't hiring hookers like all the others, his wife has the looks of a supermodel so he doesn't need to! Seems there's trouble in paradise. http://mespace.wordpress.com/

Supermodel? Hardly. That term is used very loosely.

The LORD giveth, and the LORD taketh away. It's just not spelled out HOW.

Go with the will of the LORD ye preachers, unless of course you don't understand the verse -

"ye shall reap what you sow"

There is nothing more HOLIER THAN THOU than the evangelicals of our country. I just finished reading the latest Joyce Meyer article in my local county paper. It is called " Are you a people pleaser?" Obviously she is not. According to her BELIEFS we should not care one iota what another person wants or needs. The only important thing in life is to do what GOD wants. I would love to post this question to Joyce Meyer: What would a evangelical preacher do if when leaving his/her huge mansion on Sunday morning, saw a fire in a neighbors house, and heard the children there screaming for help. We all know that his most important deed of the day is to yell his god fearing sermon to the congregation. If he even thought about running in the firery house to perhaps save the children, if he failed and died himself I,m sure god would be really pissed off, because he didn't give that sermon praising you know who. Oh well, I guess caring for the life of children is nothing in comparison to preaching the word of, who was that again, oh yah, GOD.

Read a little closer. Joyce does do good for others. As a victim of abuse in childhood, her natural reaction is to take care of herself. But she's overcame it. What I think Joyce meant was: don't let other people's needs or wants stop you from your own personal relationship with God.

How do you know that Joyce Meyer wouldn't run into the house to save the children?!!!

She assaulted a flight attendant as she made her way to the cockpit?? If this had been a minority people would be shouting 9-11. She'll get away with it and probably settle before a verdict is read.

So true.

I used to work near the "Lakewood Arena" and they rent parking lots and city cops to direct traffic about 3 nights and Sundays every week. I always felt relieved to know those cops didn't have more important things to do in Houston than waving cars into a parking lot. And, no, they aren't security guards but actual HPD officers.

As a retired flight attendant(enough, already!), I believe that assaulting a crew member is still a Federal offense. Why should the Reverend's wife be handled with kid gloves and be given special treatment? Anybody in Houston hear of 9/11?

This is classic...

"While Hardin questioned potential jurors, some said they didn't like preachers or televangelists and that ministers can lie."

What? Ministers CAN lie? Please. Ministers do lie. It's part of their job. They're lying by making metaphysical claims about things which they say they are certain about, but could not possibly be certain. Claiming to know things you don't know is the very essence of lying.

Flight attendants are now getting scary, press the help button more than once the attendant will warn you not to interfere with the flight. Press it three times and the fbi will meet you when you leave.. The best of the KGB and gestapo are good candidates for today's attendants, its a sorry state. If I could go by train I would...

More interesting is the fact that the televangelists were traveling in First Class.

I remember when the preacher's wife just sat in the front row, to show that someone was listening to her husband's sermons ... and played the organ during the hymn singing. I don't think first class plane tickets were part of her deal. Victoria Osteen has it all over them other preachers' wives.
