Former Olympic speedskater Joey Cheek had his visa revoked by Chinese authorities Wednesday, hours before he was set to travel to Beijing to promote his effort urging China to help make peace in the war-torn Darfur section of Sudan.

Cheek, the president and co-founder of a collection of Olympic athletes known as Team Darfur, was planning to spend about two weeks in China, when he received an unexpected call from authorities.

The 2006 American gold medalist said they told him they were denying him entrance into the country and were "not required to give a reason."

"I didn't see it coming," Cheek said. "I figured once they gave me a visa, I wouldn't imagine they wouldn't allow me to come in later. That was a big shock. I wasn't expecting to get a call the evening before I was leaving for Beijing."

White House press secretary Dana Perino said the U.S. would protest China's decision to deny the visa.

One of Cheek's key initiatives was urging the international community to persuade Sudan to observe the ancient tradition of the Olympic truce during the Beijing Games.

More than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced in fighting in the western Sudanese region since ethnic African tribesmen took up arms in 2003.

The Olympic truce dates to the ancient games in Greece, when fighting was halted to ensure athletes had safe passage to travel to and from the competitions. Attempts to revive the truce in modern times have met with only modest success, most notably in the Balkans during the 1992 and 1994 Games.

Cheek said he has been upset by China's treatment of athletes involved in his cause and thinks the International Olympic Committee's rules that prohibit political protest go against the spirit of the games.

"I've been pretty unimpressed with the IOC's efforts in protecting athletes, for giving them any options," Cheek said.

IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said the IOC was aware from press reports that Cheek had been denied a visa.

"Visa applications from non-accredited persons do not fall within the IOC's remit, and we are therefore not best placed to answer you on this question," Moreau said.

Jim Scherr, chief executive officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee, called Cheek a "great Olympic champion."

"We think that it is unfortunate," Scherr said. "But it's between this government and Joey as a private citizen."

Cheek said he has been greeted warmly on his previous trips to China.

"I don't begrudge them the Olympics, I think they'll do well with them," Cheek said. "But there are so many of their government's policies that I find repulsive, especially for athletes who have no intention but to help someone else."

He had planned to attend a United Nations Olympic celebration and some charity events but wasn't planning any big Team Darfur demonstrations. Now he's scrambling to figure out how to draw attention to his cause back home in Washington.

"Of course I would have liked to have been there, advocating for a peaceful resolution," he said. "But we'll figure something out."

Why is anyone surprised that Cheek wasn't allowed in. It's China! If you do something they don't like, you don't get in.

The games were never intended to express your political grievances. They are suppose
to promote good will between the countries. So for two weeks every four years we
are suppose to put our differences aside and show our strengths throught our athletes

Actually, Iraq's ban from the Olympics was lifted - the athletes have been welcomed.

Political grievances?

I believe it is more a humanitarian request for assistance in Darfur.

And during National Brotherhood Week,
National Brotherhood Week,
Go up and shake the hand of
Someone that you can't stand
Because its National Brotherhood Week,
National Brotherhood Week.
It only lasts a week so have no fear,
Be thankful that it doesn't last all year!

Well, when you agree to hold the Olympics in a totalitarian country this is the sort of crap that happens.

Wake Up America! Let us be consistent against any dictator

China is one giant monopoly of everything of power. Chinese companies, i.e. Chinese government run companies are scavenging for and other natural resources in the vast land of Africa. They are also dumping their imitated goods that have the lowest quality in the sub-Saharan Africa. Sudan is too good for China to back away. China has taught dictatorial regimes like Al Bahsir of Sudan, Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia to just play the game of appearing that they are complying with calls for Human Rights. All these dictators had to do is to say, “They are committed to human rights but it is hard to do all the Western countries would because Africa is a backward society, hence it takes generations to understand democracy. We easily buy their arguments because if we please the dictators, they will comply or this dictator is better than the other etc. If the USA had not helped to sabotage the Ethiopia election of May 2005, we would not have had other countries following that. Have you seen who is opposing the Al-Bashir’s indictment by ICC? Read this: http://www.ethiomedia.com/all/6263.html

We cannot afford to offend China. They are paying for our war so we can still go shopping and buy their "stuff."
Good old consumerism.
What a treat.

Unfortunately there is no where you can go to get away from buying their stuff. The whole world is flodded with their stuff.

There are too many poor to avoid shopping in places that don't sell Chinese items... if there is such a place anymore.

The olympics used to stand for something: National Pride. It used to be amateurs doing what they love for nothing other than pride and national identity. Nowadays companies pay ungodly amounts of money to get Olympian endorsements and advertising in the games; these people have been made no better than the professional athletes in America... they are too highly-paid, too absorbed in the "win-at-any-cost" mentality and it takes away from the fundamental spirit of the Olympic Games. Too bad

Yet Bush is willing to be used to legitimize the political farce that the IOC has allowed this year's games to become as China gives the one-finger salute to everyone who believed their promises of unfettered freedom and human rights reform. Just like the time he minced through the bushes hand-in-hand with the Saudi dictator, Bush has prostituted himself and further disgraced this country.

Break out the critical thinking and reading skills please.

Nowhere in the article does it say that Joey Cheek is protesting China.
his group is asking China for some help with the dire situation in Darfur.

Is anybody even planning to watch this theatrical nonsense anyway? I don't know a single person who is interested in the olympics. They're all too busy trying to figure out how to pay their mortgage and fill up their gas tank. I could care less about some performance-enhanced boob that can run/swim/jump a hair better than other performance-ehanced boobs. It's all a big national-unity farce. What is there to be proud of in the US right now? Nothing. And the sight of the stars and stripes, and Dumya, at this event just reinforces that. Also, China is a filthy country with a despicable government and doesn't deserve one iota of positive attention. Eff them all.

i'll be watching/tivo-ing the whole thing.

i enjoy seeing the best athletes competing against each other. i like learning their back stories. i love to see the winner (regardless of her country of origin) standing there with a gold medal around her neck while her national anthem plays. and when, perchance, that happens to an american this normally non-nationalistic cynic usually gets all verklempt with emotion.

oh, and i like the opening and closing ceremonies. a lot.

my two cents: i would like to see a permanent site for the games in greece.

I am planning to watch and I know plenty of people who look forward to the Olympics. I think you kind of missed the point of this article. Although, I will agree with you that china's government is despicable and I remember being shocked when they announced them as an Olympic venue way back in like 2000.

All very commendable but understand this, China owns America partly because they hold so much of our paper. We cannot afford to offend them in any way, shape or form because if they or India call in the loans we are sunk and the downward spiral of America will accelerate rather than (hopefully) be reversed.

Not only that they are moving into other areas of the world and taking over small chunks, a town or part of a town or city here and there- with population transfer. Its slow but they are patient, you wouldn't even notice if you didn't pay attention to different analysis that happens to pop up now and then.

What they have done to Tibet is unconscionable.

so while you may not think they deserve any positive attention we cannot afford to give them negative attention. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer... hate to use the term enemy.
China is the ones to watch, not Islamic Terrorists who hate us for our Freedom! as far as taking over our way of life, the meme that the right win constantly feels the need to remind the American people

As far as the Olympic events go I enjoy them though not all the events interest me. I'm always moved by the hard work and dedication these people put into developing themselves. Their discipline is impressive and will serve them well throughout their lives. As far as Joey Cheek goes, his discipline and dedication will serve many

This is just the start. At the end of these Olympics, China will have added to its repressive reputation. Unfortunately, we no longer can divorce politics from sports, especially in this era of rampant nationalism, and hyper competitiveness, which totally negates the Olympic experience.

The MSM's outrage over & attention to, this minor accident is 100x stronger than what they showed over "cooking-the-intelligence-to-start-a-war" story that broke and promptly died yesterday. Or "can confiscate anything with electrons in it in the name of National Security" one.

But, what?!?

Wasn't allowing China to host the games suppose to get them to recognize human rights, environmental preservation and personal liberties?

Boy, that's worked out pretty swell, hasn't it?

And to think of all the deserving countries who would have preserved the honor of the Olympic tradition. Now it's just become a political pawn in the Elites game of global roulette.

I hate that China has the Olympics, and despise the fact that they have such great economic relations with the United States. The world is handing over economic dominance to a system devoid of freedom, and aggressive in its suppression of protest.

What beast are we letting grow, and what will it eat when it does?
