Former Olympic speedskater Joey Cheek had his visa revoked by Chinese authorities Wednesday, hours before he was set to travel to Beijing to promote his effort urging China to help make peace in the war-torn Darfur section of Sudan.

Cheek, the president and co-founder of a collection of Olympic athletes known as Team Darfur, was planning to spend about two weeks in China, when he received an unexpected call from authorities.

The 2006 American gold medalist said they told him they were denying him entrance into the country and were "not required to give a reason."

"I didn't see it coming," Cheek said. "I figured once they gave me a visa, I wouldn't imagine they wouldn't allow me to come in later. That was a big shock. I wasn't expecting to get a call the evening before I was leaving for Beijing."

White House press secretary Dana Perino said the U.S. would protest China's decision to deny the visa.

One of Cheek's key initiatives was urging the international community to persuade Sudan to observe the ancient tradition of the Olympic truce during the Beijing Games.

More than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced in fighting in the western Sudanese region since ethnic African tribesmen took up arms in 2003.

The Olympic truce dates to the ancient games in Greece, when fighting was halted to ensure athletes had safe passage to travel to and from the competitions. Attempts to revive the truce in modern times have met with only modest success, most notably in the Balkans during the 1992 and 1994 Games.

Cheek said he has been upset by China's treatment of athletes involved in his cause and thinks the International Olympic Committee's rules that prohibit political protest go against the spirit of the games.

"I've been pretty unimpressed with the IOC's efforts in protecting athletes, for giving them any options," Cheek said.

IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said the IOC was aware from press reports that Cheek had been denied a visa.

"Visa applications from non-accredited persons do not fall within the IOC's remit, and we are therefore not best placed to answer you on this question," Moreau said.

Jim Scherr, chief executive officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee, called Cheek a "great Olympic champion."

"We think that it is unfortunate," Scherr said. "But it's between this government and Joey as a private citizen."

Cheek said he has been greeted warmly on his previous trips to China.

"I don't begrudge them the Olympics, I think they'll do well with them," Cheek said. "But there are so many of their government's policies that I find repulsive, especially for athletes who have no intention but to help someone else."

He had planned to attend a United Nations Olympic celebration and some charity events but wasn't planning any big Team Darfur demonstrations. Now he's scrambling to figure out how to draw attention to his cause back home in Washington.

"Of course I would have liked to have been there, advocating for a peaceful resolution," he said. "But we'll figure something out."

The US rejects people who apply for visas every day based on political persuasion, ethnic origin, country of origin, race, and whether or not you wear a turban. I noticed that very few of them make headlines on Huffpo.

Perhaps it is because we do not know of these visa denials....do you have any links that would support your allegations?

What part of Olympics do you not understand? Please, we are all aware of what Homeland Insecurity does in our Country. I guess you have never been...."profiled" , "groped", and forced to drop your pants publicly at air airport.

So? If we were hosting the Olympics and it happened, it probably would make it on Huffpo.

A number of you are acting as though this is something new and we should be outraged. All countries do this people. Stop being so naive. People are denied visas every day for whatever reason a government deems appropriate. They don't have to tell you what it is, and it's not going to stop either. It's called "PNG"...Persona Non Grata. All you know is you're not welcome this time, and maybe never.

You (cardineau) want to throw open the doors to your country for everyone, no question, you go right ahead. Let me know how that works out for you?

Learn to love China, they own the USA at this point. Figure wire tapping, torture, killing habeas corpus, rendition, etc.... All to get us ready for the arrival of China as the new signature on our tax refunds.

The Forgotten “Iraq” -Somalia” of Bushes failed policy that aided Ethiopia
Al-Bashir committing another crime against Ethiopian refugees in the Sudan as we speak, these were done with the help of the Ethiopian regime itself.
China the biggest backer of rogue regimes like Al-Bashir of Sudan, Mugabe of Zimbawe has just started to impede democratic aspirations in most African countries. The USA and China has one common friend in Africa- that is, Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia. The news media talks about Zimbabwe, Sudan, and leaving out Ethiopia. Can we talk about what is happening in Somalia is because we supported and facilitated Ethiopia to invade that country. We are making the biggest mistake not following up with these countries which are making looming Darfur in Ethiopia. You can see the modest attempt by congress on this.

I'm surprised Mr. Cheek was issued a visa by Chinese authorities to begin with given how they dislike dissent.

If the Olympics were being held in the USA and a Chinese journalist wanted to point out the war crimes and atrocities of the Bush administration, his visa would be revoked.

China- they'll take your money to build Walmarts and McD's but leave you censored and out in the cold ( while they try to hack your network and sell virtual gold to online gamers)

Looks like the US athletes just gave the Chinese a big poke in the eye - right on the heels of this story. Lopez Lomong, the former "Lost Boy" of Sudan who became a 1500-meter track runner and a US citizen was just chosen by the US athletes to carry the US flag for the opening ceremonies:

Heard about the new German-Chinese restaurant? The food is great, but an hour later, you’re hungry for power.

The first time I heard that joke was on the Dick Cavett show, when Cher told it to Dick. Dick then mentioned to Cher that he had actually written it.

The prison population in the United States dwarfs the prison population in China. Most of the prisoners in the United States are Black and are also used as slave labor.

The US really has no business dictating ANYTHING to China regarding human rights.

Bravo, Mr. Cheek.

I wonder who was behind it, the Communists or Wal*Mart? Both entities seek to control the masses.

I really would like to know why American do not care about other African suffering great deal worse than Darfur such as in Somalia, The Congo, and Ethiopia.

Do you want to know why The Americans do not really care about African suffering as such and why Darfur is about politics than human rights?

the answer is few google searches away!

When you apply for a Chinese visa, they will investigate your political beliefs.
It's best not to go to China or do business with them, you may end up in on of their slave prisons.
China is a very dangerous animal.

I'll never understand why the Olympics were picked for China. I just have no interest, and feel the the worst governments [including ours] get all the money and everything that goes along with that, and the people are or will become peasants.
Joey Cheek is a great human being besides being a world champion skater.

For a long time now the IOC has been pressured to choose a developing country to host the games. Unfortunately, due to the extreme amount of money, expertise and time needed to prepare a city for the games very few developing countries have the ability to host them. China is one of the few which has the ability and, given its status as something of an 'up-and-comer' in global power politics it seemed a natural choice. Unfortunately, it hasn't turned out all that well. However, some good is coming out of it; China's hosting of the games is forcing politicians and individuals the world over to pay closer attention to China's abuses of human rights. Aside from that, I do believe another developing country should have been chosen. Brazil, Kazakhstan, Chile, Turkey and possibly South Africa all have enough money and expertise to host...
