CHICAGO — Former President Clinton will have a role at the Democratic convention in Denver later this month.

Democratic officials said Thursday that Clinton will give a speech on the third night of the convention, before an address by the as-yet-to-be-named running mate for Barack Obama, the party's likely presidential nominee. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity before the details were formally announced.

Exactly what role the former president would play at the gathering Aug. 25-28 has been the subject of speculation since his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, ended her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in early June and endorsed Obama.

Obama clinched the nomination after a sometimes bitter primary contest with Clinton.

Sen. Clinton is expected to speak on the convention's second night.

Earlier Thursday, Obama dismissed suggestions that tension between his supporters and hers could upset the gathering.

Obama told reporters that their staffs were working out mutually agreeable convention logistics. At the same time, Clinton was assuring her supporters during an online chat that she and Obama were "working together to make sure it's a big success."

Neither answered questions about whether Clinton's name should be placed in nomination so that her backers could record their votes.

Amid reports that some Clinton backers hope to raise her profile at the convention or even continue to push her candidacy, Clinton and Obama were publicly trying to ease the strained relations that exist between some of their supporters.

Flying home to Chicago, Obama told reporters that he had talked separately this week to Clinton and her husband, and that they were enthusiastic about having a smooth convention.

"As is true in all conventions, we're still working out the mechanics, the coordination," Obama said. One such issue is whether there will be a convention roll call on Clinton's nomination, he said.

"I'm letting our respective teams work out details," he said. Asked if that meant he wouldn't object to her name being placed in nomination and a vote taken, Obama said: "I didn't say that. I said that they're working it out."

Clinton has not said whether she will seek a formal vote on her bid for the nomination.

During the online chat on her Web site, she wrote that she and Obama will ensure Democrats are "fully unified."

Clinton was expected to deliver a prime-time address to delegates on Aug. 26, the second night of the convention. With the delegate roll call planned for the next evening, Obama was set to accept the nomination with a speech on the convention's fourth and final night.

"We will ensure that the voices of everyone who participated in this historic process are respected and our party is fully unified heading into the November election," Clinton wrote. "While no decisions have been made yet, I will make sure that we keep you up to date and involved with all of the convention activity."

Obama was asked whether allowing Clinton's name to be placed in nomination might lead to a catharsis for the party.

"I don't think we're looking for catharsis. I think what we're looking for is energy and excitement," he said.

Clinton insisted during the Web chat that she was sincerely behind Obama after someone asked whether she truly was supporting him or was "just saying what you have to?"

Another questioner wanted to know if there was any possibility her name would be placed in nomination, arguing that doing so "would at least give your supporters a voice in the choice for the party's nominee." She was noncommittal.

Someone else posted a note saying he hopes Clinton becomes Obama's running mate. In her response, Clinton repeated that she will do whatever Obama asks of her but it is his decision "and I am going to respect the privacy of that process by not discussing it."

The Clintons' stance toward Obama's candidacy is being closely scrutinized as the convention nears _ particularly after remarks by Bill Clinton earlier this week during a trip to Africa. Asked whether Obama was prepared to become president, the former president replied, "You can argue that nobody is ready to be president," and said he himself learned a lot in his first year on the job.

The remark was widely viewed as tepid and unenthusiastic, particularly in light of Republican candidate John McCain's frequent criticism that Obama is not ready to be president.

After his speech, Clinton and John Edwards can go out and pick up chicks.

IF the rumors about John Edwards are true you would still be doing him a grave disservice by comparing him to Bill Clinton in this regard.

Looks like I am one of the few that think this is a good thing. Maybe it will finally shut the media up, as their intent seems to continue to divide.

The problem is, that Bill Clinton is a poor former President. Honestly, do you remember any other former President trying desperately to remain relevant, and outshine their party's nominee?? He has all the grace and sensivity of a bull in a China shop! His ego gets in the way of doing what is best for the party, and the country. It is no longer about him. I think it is well past time to stop pandering to the Clintons.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course. But make no mistake about it, you can use more education on the Clin ton presidency. Just to name a few:

Congress was lost under that administration.
The first Amendment was lost when Bill signed to let the corporations take over the MSM.
Ross Per ot warned us, that we would lose jobs under the Clin ton ratified NAFTA plan.
Opening up of China trade, did us in.

Great president? What, because the economy turned good in is last 3 years, while managing to secure a surplus, then leave to Bu sh?

Hillary Clinton repeated that she will do whatever Obama asks of her but it is his decision who he selects for VP "and I am going to respect the privacy of that process by not discussing it."

Now if she would just release the Obama political adviser she has been holding hostage until she gets what she wants, the process can continue.

Let's just be clear:

Barack Obama secured the nomination and is now running the party.

He is a gracious and confident leader who is allowing the Clintons to speak at the convention.

They need to use their time allotments wisely and productively to salvage their legacies and brand name.

Clinton supporters owe him a huge debt for this opportunity and assistance.

You are absolutely correct. The c's are acting like this is their coronation and they are "allowing" O to be the nominee. Their political lives are over. She can now get her divorce and drift into the sunset.

O is a lot more intelligent and gracious than I would be. He is running a wonderful campaign. We may not see the immediate results, but rue the party that underestimates him.

So where were these people in 2000 and 2004 when the GOP stole the election. How much effort did they put into shedding light on the GOP shennanigans? How many protest sites like PUMA rose up to let the peopel know the terrible truth?

Oh yeah...since it didn't involve Sen Clinton, but only affected the rest of the US, I guess it didn't matter.

Obama has won over 85% of Clinton's former supporters, and though he may be wrestling with his VP choice, though I think he already knows who it will be, Hillary has been off the list for quite some time. Therefore, a reasonable person would conclude that Senator Obama is merely being gracious to the Clintons and respectful of their positions in the party and in the country by giving both Bill and Hillary an opportunity to speak at the convention. On the other hand, unreasonable people would think ... well, think like you do!

Calm down, everyone. Bill Clinton is going to deliver one of the best speeches that he has ever done at the convention. He is going to get everyone fired up, and the attention will only be focused on him because of the rousing speech. Hillary is going to come through, also. After the convention, Bill will be out there in all those "nooks and crannies" of the nation. Already, some pundits are saying what's going to happen--Bill will be the story, he will be the "Alpha Dog", and all attention will be on him. WRONG--that's what they are hoping; that's not what's going to happen. Percentage points will move UP for Senator Obama and stay up. Let's sit back, relax, rest, and be ready to get out there and work for Senator Obama in September and October to bring it on home on November 4!

Both Bill and Hillary are great speakers. Honestly, they have to speak. Bill is a two term dem president and Hillary is one of the most powerful women in the party, and she did run a close campaign. With that said, I am nervous about them, but I can only hope that they will see their political futures depend on doing everything they can to get Obama elected. There can be no pouting. Bill's legacy and standing in the party depends on it. Hillary's political future depends on it. Neither needs a mark by their name. Dems are pretty forgiving. But, dividing the party is something that will lose support forever.

The Clintons are doing the right thing. But they are perfectly entitled to their belief, if it exists, that Obama is a risk and might not win. If he loses, his political future will be over before it really began, and the Clintons will still be around long after.

The Obamas have stated that this is the only time he will ever run for president. His political career won't be over; he is a Senator.

Do you think Hillary is not a risk in a general election? The Republicans have so much baggage on her they were trying to get her nominated. They're laying off her because they are still hoping she will be the nominee, then they'll unload on her. That plus the sexism she claims is rampant in the nation will make her a huge political risk. The Republicans sure think so.

I will repeat this again on the comment pages.

After reading all the comments here, it appears the Media has been sucessful. They over inflated a story, adding rhetoric that doesn't exist, to acheive the goal of making the Democrats look bad. The media has proven once again how biased they truly are for John McCain.

This is the standard procedure at the Convention, when Hillary spoke her final words, she was very clear, we should all get behind and support Barack Obama. Why shouldn't she speak and be heard at the Convention, she ran for the same office, she was our First Lady for eight years. I pray, that when Obama is elected she will have a major role in getting Universal Health Care for every single American.

Bill Clinton was our President for eight years, he took the White House back from the Republicans, he did some great things for this Country, some bad ones too, but he should speak at the National Convention. How people can make all these comments about Bill and Hillary is beyond me. If they didn't speak, or weren't allowed to speak, that would be much worse, and it wouldn't show Unification at the Democratic Convention.

So please people, calm down and don't fall for what the Media is trying to do.....

Gee, looking at the comments in this thread it is a wonder that anyone would wonder why the Hilary supporters (about half of the votes counted in the primary) might not feel welcome in this campaign. The viriol of the Obama camp has been unrelenting. We have to have a united party so you Hilary supporters shut up and sit in the corner. You do not get unity just because you won. That is true with a landslide as well as a very close race like this years primary. You did not conquer the Clinton camp you merely won the primary. If you want them on board then you need to work to get them on board. Berating your opponents does nothing for reaching the final goal of making Obama President of the US. Unfortunately for some of the less mature in the party, attacking the Clinton s is more important than winning in the fall.

You want unity then work for it. You want to work out your feelings towards the Clinton s go to therapy.

I think the Obamanistas are so crude and rude that it amounts to the kids taking over the house and kicking the parents out to the curb to make it on their own.

I know I feel homeless without the Democratic Party. It obviously is no longer a home for my political convictions of what is good for the majority of Americans. It is not good for me to hang out with Obamanistas.

They are literally drunk with the anticipation of power. Like Obama said he wanted to do - tear out the bowling alley at the White House. They will have a demolition party. I think they should build a big mega arena in the rose garden with a huge pulpit for the skinny preacher man.

Your sick prejudice and your bitter hatred has made you lose your sense of perspective.

If you think WE'RE crude, just check out the PUMA sites.

Those folks are downright infantile.

You refer to "Obamanistas" as crude and rude. Have you read your own posts?

Clinton actions speak for themselves.

Bill's actions recently especially.

This has the potential to make Bill and Hill the most reviled people in America. OJ and Chaney could not dream of more hate.

Go ahead and take your last opportunity to be selfish and there won't be a place on this planet you could hide for ruining this country's only hope for a new direction.

I know you won't listen cause your the Clinton's, but not even your shameless personalities could withstand the amount of hate you WILL get if you attempt to hijack the convention.

What a joke you are Will. The Clinton's were the new direction before Bush took office.

How old of a kid are you...21?

I'm old enough to know that you don't commit Adultry. Especially not with a child or while your wife is in the house then LIE to the world about it. Maybe you really didn't get it when Obama said we needed a change in this country's politics. Please for God's sake Aubrey8 pull your head out before you... ahh too late.

Clinton's are the reason Gore lost.

What new direction? A new stain on a red dress this time?

Attention all chubby, unattractive girls who've had a relationship with Bill Clinton recently. Please come forward now! Then, maybe, we'll have a Clinton free convention.

You are the absolutely worst of the worst.I feel very sorry for our country that it is filled with people like you.You are the reason that our country is in the sad shape it is in.I hope you remember that karma is a wonderful thing. What goes around comes around. When
we have a president in office we can be proud of,all you PUMAs and Bill and Hill will get your karma back in major doses. The Clinton's have damaged their legacy and reputations beyond repair.
