CHICAGO — Former President Clinton will have a role at the Democratic convention in Denver later this month.

Democratic officials said Thursday that Clinton will give a speech on the third night of the convention, before an address by the as-yet-to-be-named running mate for Barack Obama, the party's likely presidential nominee. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity before the details were formally announced.

Exactly what role the former president would play at the gathering Aug. 25-28 has been the subject of speculation since his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, ended her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in early June and endorsed Obama.

Obama clinched the nomination after a sometimes bitter primary contest with Clinton.

Sen. Clinton is expected to speak on the convention's second night.

Earlier Thursday, Obama dismissed suggestions that tension between his supporters and hers could upset the gathering.

Obama told reporters that their staffs were working out mutually agreeable convention logistics. At the same time, Clinton was assuring her supporters during an online chat that she and Obama were "working together to make sure it's a big success."

Neither answered questions about whether Clinton's name should be placed in nomination so that her backers could record their votes.

Story continues below

Amid reports that some Clinton backers hope to raise her profile at the convention or even continue to push her candidacy, Clinton and Obama were publicly trying to ease the strained relations that exist between some of their supporters.

Flying home to Chicago, Obama told reporters that he had talked separately this week to Clinton and her husband, and that they were enthusiastic about having a smooth convention.

"As is true in all conventions, we're still working out the mechanics, the coordination," Obama said. One such issue is whether there will be a convention roll call on Clinton's nomination, he said.

"I'm letting our respective teams work out details," he said. Asked if that meant he wouldn't object to her name being placed in nomination and a vote taken, Obama said: "I didn't say that. I said that they're working it out."

Clinton has not said whether she will seek a formal vote on her bid for the nomination.

During the online chat on her Web site, she wrote that she and Obama will ensure Democrats are "fully unified."

Clinton was expected to deliver a prime-time address to delegates on Aug. 26, the second night of the convention. With the delegate roll call planned for the next evening, Obama was set to accept the nomination with a speech on the convention's fourth and final night.

"We will ensure that the voices of everyone who participated in this historic process are respected and our party is fully unified heading into the November election," Clinton wrote. "While no decisions have been made yet, I will make sure that we keep you up to date and involved with all of the convention activity."

Obama was asked whether allowing Clinton's name to be placed in nomination might lead to a catharsis for the party.

"I don't think we're looking for catharsis. I think what we're looking for is energy and excitement," he said.

Clinton insisted during the Web chat that she was sincerely behind Obama after someone asked whether she truly was supporting him or was "just saying what you have to?"

Another questioner wanted to know if there was any possibility her name would be placed in nomination, arguing that doing so "would at least give your supporters a voice in the choice for the party's nominee." She was noncommittal.

Someone else posted a note saying he hopes Clinton becomes Obama's running mate. In her response, Clinton repeated that she will do whatever Obama asks of her but it is his decision "and I am going to respect the privacy of that process by not discussing it."

The Clintons' stance toward Obama's candidacy is being closely scrutinized as the convention nears _ particularly after remarks by Bill Clinton earlier this week during a trip to Africa. Asked whether Obama was prepared to become president, the former president replied, "You can argue that nobody is ready to be president," and said he himself learned a lot in his first year on the job.

The remark was widely viewed as tepid and unenthusiastic, particularly in light of Republican candidate John McCain's frequent criticism that Obama is not ready to be president.

The Clintons simply can not let go gracefully. By placing Senator Clintons name into nomination there will be those delegates who will not let it go. This may be the only Convention without a consensus despite Mrs. Clinton's lip service to "party unity". She doesn't want this- she never has and only will in 2012 when she hopes to unite it behind her.

I, am kind of wondering why though, with the variety of smooth talking Congressman and Senator's who he could give a national stage to in a crucial election year, he chose an ex-president he has bad blood with.

Lets not forget that many Senate and all House members, some of which used to be friends with the Clintons, and who are all Superdelegates, support Obama rather than their long time friends, the Clintons.

I think Obama could do a lot better giving someone who is in the national spotlight in a House/Senate race for his party a chance to speak, just like he got a chance 4 years ago.

I agree, sometimes you have to do what is best even though it hurts.

I would rather see the c l i n tons attend the convention from a locked room in the bowels of the convention center.

Again, O is correct , let's have faith in him.

I just realized something. So much has been said about B's possible envy of O, especially in the area of giving speeches. Until O arrived, B had the corner on brilliant oratory. I suppose that from this very moment until the very moment on August 27 that B begins his speech, he will be writing, rewriting, and practicing his delivery. And if his ego is as big as some say, he will want to give the speech of his life, one that O, when he gives HIS speech, won't be able to match, let alone top.

The old alpha male and the new alpha male, locked in mortal combat. Me, I think that O has more humility than B and won 't be as upset if B upstages him , as B will be if B doesn't manage to upstage O. What I mean is, if O loses this contest, he will be relaxed and gracious, whereas if B loses,, he will pop every button on his suit and his face will turn redder than it ever has before and his head might even explode. LITERALLY.

The Democrats, unlike the Republicans, can invite their former presidents and vice presidents to participate at the Convention. It is my hope that President Carter will also have a prominent place. Senator Obama is an intelligent man who appreciates the contributions of those who preceded him. As to a Clinton-Obama oratorical competition, this seems absurd. Senator Obama can rely on President Clinton to give an excellent speech--with or without extraordinary preparation. Probably President Clinton's most incredible speaking feat, was a State of the Union address, delivered despite the text being inadvertently left out of the tele-prompter. He delivered an hour-long, detailed state of the union, without notes, before both houses of congress and the nation. That "old alpha male", President Clinton, will be 62, on August 19, only15 years older than Senator Obama, and 10 years younger than the real competitor, McCain.

There is nothing the party can do to repair these two oversized, overly sensitive egos short of kissing their feet and handing Hillary the nomination. Geeze, after Monica and handing Boosh the Whitehouse, I would have thought Bubba might have found a modicum of humility. If Obama loses, they will never be forgiven and will never recover. Could one of the most divisive couples in America take divisiveness to a whole new level?

As much as I am a fan of sullydog, I have to disagree with one point. If Obama loses, the Clintons and their supporters couldn't be happier. They will rejoice in the fact that the wrong candidate was chosen initially as they have been crowing about for months. They will begin their campaign for 2012 and take over "Their" Democratic Party which had almost slipped from their grasp. An Obama win would be devastating for their power struggles. I think you have it backwards.

Wonder how may times he will heap praises to Obama during his speech or answer the question on who would make the the better president. You know the MSM will be examining each word that is spoken.

May be now that he is given a part in the convention he may get over his hurt feelings.

I don't think so but to be sure all his and his wife's actions will be analysied to death by the punduts.

This was posted by a blogger on the BBC website. I laughed it off at first, but am slowly beginning to wonder... What if...? What do y'all think?

"I do find it interesting that Obama has not announced his VP before the Olympics, and I think we can be sure that he will not announce whoever that might be during the Olympics; nor, without overshadowing Hillary deliberately, can he announce his VP on the conference Tuesday, so it looks like the VP will be announced on the night. Or has the VP just been announced and we haven't noticed it: not Hillary, but Bill.

Bill is scheduled to speak on the night of the VP nomination. Imagine, for a moment, Obama coming out of the wings just before Bill is due to speak and saying, 'I want to say something about the nomination for VP. As you all know that person ought to have foreign policy experience and economic competency; be someone who I can trust for advice, and who is prepared to disagree with me; but who shares a common vision for the future. Bill has graciously accepted that role for the next four years'.

It would, in an instant, change everything. The Republicans would have their single biggest strength neutralised and be caught unprepared; the Democrats could unite around Barack and Bill. The south would comprehensively be put into play, as well as the southwest. Pennsylvania, Michigan, et al, would all safely be in the Democrat column.

I'm pretty sure this isn't allowed under the Constitution because Bill has already been preident for the maximum terms allowed (i.e. so, if O were incapacitated, B isn't able to take over...so then what is the point of nominating him in the first place).

Actually, there's nothing in the Constitution that would prevent it. The language only says the same person cannot be elected to teh role of President 3 times. Succession from the role of VP is not being elected.

The Clintons are proving to be the thorn in the side of many Americans who want to move on. They will hurt their legacy. Senator Clinton ought to be thinking about her re-election as Senator for New York. I suspect given her behavior in the primary...her election is not a gimme. Voters are not going to forget her obstinance and selfishness. Most of Senator Obama's supporters would have been very supportive of Senator Clinton and her husband had they not "thrown the kitchen sink" at Senator Obama in their obession to win. The media keeps talking about her supporters...well when is someone going to talk about how many of us (Obama supporters)cannot stand how presumptious the Clintons are about their place in history. We the people have just a bit to say about these two and it gets harder every day to even want to see or hear from them. A huge change from a year ago. They attempted to hijack the convention and media attention from John Kerry four years ago, if you listen to the various stories about their terrible behavior toward John.

I was sad when Howard Dean lost in 2004 but I never expected anything from the party and those who supported Kerry. I am afraid that the emotional drama surrounding Clinton's loss gives ammunition to those who mistakenly believe that women are too emotional to be President. I've heard men, including my husband, complain about women being allowed to play on their softball teams: "They don't understand the rules." "They react too emotionally when they don't do well." "They are more interested in personal interactions than in playing the game." I think these comments are all off the mark, but the fact that so many people are unable to let go of Clinton's unsuccessful run, and Senator Clinton's own tacit approval of this, do damage to women in politics.

You got to love how Obama quickly took away the story from the media LOL. Now whatever will they do could they start focusing on John McCain and his past record and what he has been up for 35 years goodness knows there is enough things there to discuss but for some reason they get an orgasm from drama in the democratic party and Bill Clinton is drama personified.

See this is another reason why this idea that Obama is a celebrity is positively LUDICRIS. The guy hates drama celebrity types get off on drama. Obama is happy to be concentrating on the issues the guy wasnt even talking about himself until pundits like Chris Matthews kept squawking we dont know much about him he has to keep talking about himself let folks get to know him yada yada. The guy has been able to control his organization by getting folks to work together as a complete unit and they are complaining that there is not enough drama. So who is really the celebrity. The American people need to open their eyes and grow a brain if something doesnt fit ITS NOT TRUE.

I say, just get over it ...
Four years ago, the best speech in the Democratic Convention was delivered by Senetor Obama. From that moment on, the focus was on then unknown, Barack Obama.
This time it is Bill Clinton, but , where is the threat here ? Yes, his speech will be the best of all. But, Bill Clinton, is our twice elected President and not running for the third time.
So I say, get over those insecurities and let us hear Him.

Obama gave a good speech in the 2004 convention. That is true.

Now, Kerry ended up losing, while maintaining a lead at this time 4 years ago.

Lets see if anyone can give Obama an electrifying speech like he did 4 years ago, which I not only believe helped him get elected into the senate, but gave him this bid in the presidency he currently has.

Bill is taxed, that's true, he has a bit of bad blood with Obama, and I doubt he will be as enthusiastic as he has been in the past this year.

The issue here is this they DAMAGED Obama when they labeled him not qualified. It damaged him because when people here this particularly white people images of Affirmative Action runs through their mind thats the kind of obstacles that AA face if you say a white person is unqualfiied it DOES NOT pack the same punch. With that said why the hell would Obama trust this guy with a microphone at an event that is suppose to be the official kickoff of his run for Presidency he says the wrong thing and it could have consequence so when people say let him speak I think they actually believe that words is just words no its not and the wrong word from Bill could cost Obama the election thats the obstacle you face as AA the obstacle that folks dont want to talk about. It HURT in the primary when Hilary Clinton did it. Thats why I would NEVER EVER forgive her. I would NEVER vote for her again as a woman I expected her to know better what power words carry. So a speech is never just a speech however SAYING that can be damaging.
