CHICAGO — Former President Clinton will have a role at the Democratic convention in Denver later this month.

Democratic officials said Thursday that Clinton will give a speech on the third night of the convention, before an address by the as-yet-to-be-named running mate for Barack Obama, the party's likely presidential nominee. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity before the details were formally announced.

Exactly what role the former president would play at the gathering Aug. 25-28 has been the subject of speculation since his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, ended her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in early June and endorsed Obama.

Obama clinched the nomination after a sometimes bitter primary contest with Clinton.

Sen. Clinton is expected to speak on the convention's second night.

Earlier Thursday, Obama dismissed suggestions that tension between his supporters and hers could upset the gathering.

Obama told reporters that their staffs were working out mutually agreeable convention logistics. At the same time, Clinton was assuring her supporters during an online chat that she and Obama were "working together to make sure it's a big success."

Neither answered questions about whether Clinton's name should be placed in nomination so that her backers could record their votes.

Amid reports that some Clinton backers hope to raise her profile at the convention or even continue to push her candidacy, Clinton and Obama were publicly trying to ease the strained relations that exist between some of their supporters.

Flying home to Chicago, Obama told reporters that he had talked separately this week to Clinton and her husband, and that they were enthusiastic about having a smooth convention.

"As is true in all conventions, we're still working out the mechanics, the coordination," Obama said. One such issue is whether there will be a convention roll call on Clinton's nomination, he said.

"I'm letting our respective teams work out details," he said. Asked if that meant he wouldn't object to her name being placed in nomination and a vote taken, Obama said: "I didn't say that. I said that they're working it out."

Clinton has not said whether she will seek a formal vote on her bid for the nomination.

During the online chat on her Web site, she wrote that she and Obama will ensure Democrats are "fully unified."

Clinton was expected to deliver a prime-time address to delegates on Aug. 26, the second night of the convention. With the delegate roll call planned for the next evening, Obama was set to accept the nomination with a speech on the convention's fourth and final night.

"We will ensure that the voices of everyone who participated in this historic process are respected and our party is fully unified heading into the November election," Clinton wrote. "While no decisions have been made yet, I will make sure that we keep you up to date and involved with all of the convention activity."

Obama was asked whether allowing Clinton's name to be placed in nomination might lead to a catharsis for the party.

"I don't think we're looking for catharsis. I think what we're looking for is energy and excitement," he said.

Clinton insisted during the Web chat that she was sincerely behind Obama after someone asked whether she truly was supporting him or was "just saying what you have to?"

Another questioner wanted to know if there was any possibility her name would be placed in nomination, arguing that doing so "would at least give your supporters a voice in the choice for the party's nominee." She was noncommittal.

Someone else posted a note saying he hopes Clinton becomes Obama's running mate. In her response, Clinton repeated that she will do whatever Obama asks of her but it is his decision "and I am going to respect the privacy of that process by not discussing it."

The Clintons' stance toward Obama's candidacy is being closely scrutinized as the convention nears _ particularly after remarks by Bill Clinton earlier this week during a trip to Africa. Asked whether Obama was prepared to become president, the former president replied, "You can argue that nobody is ready to be president," and said he himself learned a lot in his first year on the job.

The remark was widely viewed as tepid and unenthusiastic, particularly in light of Republican candidate John McCain's frequent criticism that Obama is not ready to be president.

As far as I am concerned, I was not aware that THE CLINTONS had an entitlement to the presidency, out of millions of Americans.

THIS IS A SILLY ELECTION SEASON.

THE CLINTONS are not the only ones that can run a country. Helloooo, Someone please inform them. Anyone, someone,..............

Oh, Father Fledger was right..........Hill thought this is mine.............

Bill has had little self-control during this election cycle. He may just publicly beat the crap out of O at the convention. Who knows, anything goes for Bill.

When will this ridiculous soap opera end? Will the Cl-in-tons push this until they completely ruin their legacy except in the eyes of a few? It certainly looks that way.

Frankly the handful of PUMAS and others that are vocal in support of Hill don't worry me in the least. To the majority of Americans they appear as petty, and sore losers, which of course they are. What angers me is the Cl-in-tons selfish actions. Yet, I am not at all surprised. I was one of those that thought Hill would tarnish O as best she could in the primary to set up a loss in the general while she plotted her run in 2012. Low & behold.............

I hope BillyBob doesn't slip up and say how he really feels ...
"okay, now, I want ya'll to vote for Hillary".
Geesh!
The Clintons remind me of that segment John Belushi used to do on Saturday Nite Live, "The Thing that wouldn't leave" .... a house guest stays FOREVER, and doesn't know when the visit is over.
Hello, Bill??? The primary is over!

It's actually the Cl-in-tons who are taking on the party, not the other way around as you suggest. They feel they are above all else. They still feel entitled. They feel they are more important than not only the party but also more important than getting a dem in the WH, that much is obvious.
I think it all comes back to what many of the talking heads were saying when Hill wouldnt leave the race. The question was, will she try to tarnish O so he loses and she can run again 2012. I think she has answered that question loud & clear.

I'm amazed that the Democrats would even allow bill to stay in the party after his years of wh*ring around with Monica then he drags the whole country down by lying and denying his affair not to mention the taxpayers money spent investigating the affair....what a joke!

After reading all the comments here, it appears the Media has been sucessful. They over inflated a story, adding rhetoric that doesn't exist, to acheive the goal of making the Democrats look bad. The media has proven once again how biased they truly are for John McCain.

This is the standard procedure at the Convention, when Hillary spoke her final words, she was very clear, we should all get behind and support Barack Obama. Why shouldn't she speak and be heard at the Convention, she ran for the same office, she was our First Lady for eight years. I pray, that when Obama is elected she will have a major role in getting Universal Health Care for every single American.

Bill Clinton was our President for eight years, he took the White House back from the Republicans, he did some great things for this Country, some bad ones too, but he should speak at the National Convention. How people can make all these comments about Bill and Hillary is beyond me. If they didn't speak, or weren't allowed to speak, that would be much worse, and it wouldn't show Unification at the Democratic Convention.

So please people, calm down and don't fall for what the Media is trying to do.....

jpshotwheels, you hit the nail right on the head, the MSM has blown this way out of proportion. HRC has said many times that all Dems. should get behind Obama. I take her at her word and so should all of you folks.

Bill C. did way more good for us then bad and there is no way he should be dissed. He left bush with a balenced budget and a deficet that was shrinking, and what has happened in 7 1/2 years is disgracefull. bush has done more harm to our reputation in the world and to our treasury and to our depleted milatary then he should have been allowed to do.

It is time for Dems. to come togather and vote OBAMA and get these crooks out of the White House.

Bill was NOT the president for 8 yrs, he held the office but he did not conduct himself as a president for almost 4yrs, he was too busy sexing- it- up with Monica. The last 2 yrs of his 2nd term were spent lying and denying sexual sessions he "DID NOT HAVE" with that woman. He has NO shame.....NONE

first and foremost obama is a politician, and where he has come from in the past 18 months, a pretty good one. does he need the clintons to get elected, i doubt it, but if he's smart, which he his, he'll play nice with them until he gets elected. once he does that he won't need either of them again, and i predict will start distancing himself from both of them. both the clintons having major roles in his administration, is just political fodder

Do you really believe that H and B are going to give him a full-blooded endorsement at the convention unless he has promised them something good? For H, some kind of good job. Depending on what it is, O may not be able to distance himself from them, not entirely, anyway.

They aren't stupid, they are not going to be used and then tossed aside. They will have a plan. A demand, I should say.

Bulbul, You got that right! President Clinton, Like Barack, is a Leo. They are self assured, which sometimes comes off as arrogant. I love President Clinton, no one has done more positive as President for our party or our country, in my estimation. It is so obvious that Barack Obama has watched and studied every tape that President Clinton has ever made as President, and while he was running for president., to try to emulate Clinton and his success. No one, in my estimation, has the star power and intelligence of our former pres, NO ONE! Hillary comes closest, but you have to work with what you have, so I am voting for Barack but don't expect him to be as good as Clinton, though he might come close as Leo's make powerful leaders!

It's kinda funny that Democrats (you know, the ones that gave us the patriot act, knew about torture, gave us the war, supported spying on americans, mccassey [sp?], bankruptcy bill, etc, etc. etc. and have done nothing about treason or war profiteering,

are complaining about the Clin tons as sellouts.
