So is John McCain a maverick who can elicit praise from across the aisle, or isn't he?

The Arizona Republican's campaign put out a web-ad this morning that featured past encomiums from several high-profile Democrats. The DNC wasted no time assembling their response ... using the same Democrats as McCain's campaign.

The DNC's response piece is a skillful mimic of McCain's ad -- straight down to the loping, country slide guitar boogie rhythm on the soundtrack.

Sens. Joe Biden, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, former Sen. Tom Daschle, and DNC Chairman Howard Dean all offer up-to-date evaluations of McCain, summed up by the ad's first two titles: "John McCain ... Maverick No More."

But where McCain's ad used Hillary Clinton's praise as the coup de grace, Democrats are giving President George W. Bush the closing honors.

After a title card reads "Let's Let President Bush Have The Final Say," the president proclaims:

"It's been my honor to welcome my friend John McCain as the nominee of the Republican Party. I wish you all the best. I'm proud to be your friend."

Story continues below

Full script:

TEXT: John McCain ...Maverick No More.

Senator Joe Biden: "But stylistically and substantively, there is no daylight between George Bush and John McCain. They are joined at the hip."

Senator John Kerry: "John McCain has changed in profound and fundamental ways that I find personally really surprising, and frankly upsetting. He is not the John McCain as a senator who defined himself quote as a 'maverick' though questionable. This is a different John McCain."

Senator Tom Daschle: "On Iraq, on the economy, on tax policy, on domestic policy, across the board. He is espousing the Bush policies. He's changed a lot since 2001."

Senator Hillary Clinton: "But in the end, after eight devastating years under President Bush, Senator McCain is simply offering four years more."

DNC Chairman Howard Dean: "You know, the John McCain of 2000 wouldn't' vote for this John McCain. We don't need another four years of George Bush. What he's proposing is four more years of George Bush's economic policy and its ridiculous and its unfair the American people."

TEXT: Let's Let President Bush Have the Final Say

President Bush: "Its been my honor to welcome my friend John McCain as the nominee of the Republican Party... I wish you all the best. I'm proud to be your friend."

TEXT: We Can't Afford Another Four Years of the Same Old Politics.

B ush and M cCain share very similar backgrounds. Both are spoiled rich boys that turned out to be juvenile delinquents. Considering B ush stole the election, it shouldn't come as a surprise that he ran the country off into the ditch. Judging by M cCain's complete lack of character and honesty don't expect anything different from M cCain except probably worse. He is desperate to make his own money (instead of using C indy's all the time) so he wants to please b-ig o-il. A hero in his own mind.

I like this! I wish ads like this were everywhere, running all the time but they can still go harder. Did you guys read that they arrested a man for threatening to kill O??? It's on CNN'S website. I was hoping to see it here. You can also read the affidavit, too. The man had a whole bunch of ammunition, some guns, a machete and hatchet and admitted he had mental and emotional problems and even 'joked' to Secret Service that he would just 'sniper' O!!! Here come the total nutjobs!!

Ya know, if obama loses this election it's because fools like you couldn't shut their mouths when silence would accomplish more. What Clinton said in the middle of a primary campaign was dumb...but essentially harmless to the nation. What obama did regarding FISA hurts the nation. See a difference?

I'm not a Clinton supporter. I wanted Edwards to get the nomination. The difference between you and me is I think with my brain, you think with your hormones

"What Clinton said in the middle of a primary campaign was dumb...but essentially harmless to the nation."

Oh really? How about what the Clinton's are doing now Liberal2? Harmless? Hardly. The Clinton's have split this party apart for their own selfish reasons. So yes, if O loses this election they will have done harm to this nation. And they will be blamed as well they should.

This behavior from the Clinton's is beyond shocking. As for her PUMA's who plan to show their a$$es at that convention well you go right ahead -- but remember to blame yourselves when Ms. Hill exits stage center right from the Senate. Governor of NY I don't think so.

This is a terrific ad. They should run it constantly. Great music pushin' the message along. Obama needs to listen to Schumer.

Second: They have got to use the word: Republican. Bush Republican. John McCain Republican. Incompetence. Graft and corruption. Lies. Deceit. Self-serving. Torturing--against American and international ideals that come from US. They have allowed so much more pain under the banner of OUR name.

We have got to croak these self-serving Republicans. Big Time. This matters so much more then Clinton or Obama or anybody else.

I agree, they need to stop using words like it's "disappointing, it's saddening, it's disheartening" and tell it like it is (like the normal person would). Say words like, that's a lie, that's garbage, that's crap. Forceful words that everyone understands and there is no ambiguity in. You don't have to fight dirty, you just have to be forceful.

That Hillary quote makes me insane. It just goes to show she only cares about herself.

Keep smashing those soft lobs. Keep McWho behind the baseline, but be ready to slam the McFiends when they start oozing out of their hidey-holes.

A nice touch to this comeback would be film footage of the Bush supporters from 2004 chanting
"4 more, 4 more, 4 more" and ending with the Teresa Heinz Kerry's prophetic comment,
"4 more years of HELL!"

I like the simple comparing of Bush and McCain. Democratic Senators using 4 syllable words
are not going to sell to "Joe Sixpack " Karl Rove understands this. He puts his attacks on the emotional
level in simple words. Simple words for simple people. Emotional messages for an electorate that has been conditioned by years of TV watching to respond emotionally instead of thinking.

I got a news flash for you, no one listens to Democratic senators.
