John McCain was widely ridiculed several weeks ago for fielding reporter's questions in the cheese aisle of a grocery store. But the location of the impromptu press conference was hardly random. The McCain camp, in a strategy memo, has pinpointed grocery stores as an important venue for the Senator to push his economic agenda.

In a McCain campaign "Economic Communications Plan" that was obtained by the Huffington Post, an aide to the Senator lays out several themes, tactics and objectives to shore up the Arizona Republican's standing on the economy and paint Barack Obama as a "job killing machine."

"Our polling tells us that Americans are still not tuned into what the candidates might do to fix the economy," reads the memo. "We have an opportunity to fill in that gap."

The strategy, which was authored by Taylor Griffin -- a veteran of the Bush White House and Treasury Department who serves McCain as a senior adviser -- seems built around traditional themes. The McCain campaign will paint Obama as being "aligned with trial lawyers" and "unions (card check, trade, education reform)," and push the frame that he "raises taxes" and "will kill jobs."

In contrast, McCain will be positioned as a bold leader on economic matters, someone who has a "record of taking on corporate interests" and will "fight speculation driving up prices of oil and food" as well as "the lawsuit culture."

"People are tired of big corporations, lobbyist and special interests who they feel prosper at their expense," the memo reads. "People must understand that John McCain is not only thinking of their future, but their children's futures as well."

To do this, McCain's camp plans to utilize a number of tactics, including "family budget roundtables, grocery store visits," and "roundtable events heavily tilted towards women to discuss the pressures the economy is placing on family finances and how McCain's plan would help." The campaign also will work the fourth estate. As detailed in Taylor's memo, McCain will "provide compelling set of programming and surrogate activity to drive media interest," and "mobilize economists in target states supporting the McCain plan to engage the media in support of our plan."

Framing, indeed, is a major component of the strategy document. Aides to the Senator envision an "All Star Economists Project" that would "use prominent economists to bolster [the] intellectual case for the McCain plan" -- see the much-disputed list of 300 -- and "roll out Nobel Prize winners endorsing [his] plan." On a local level, the Senator will rely on a "Small Business Network," in which small business owners would serve "as local surrogates for the McCain plan... write letters to the editor, op-eds and participate in surrogate events."

One Griffin bullet point made its way into a recent public McCain statement: emphasizing similarities between the Senator's prescriptions for Iraq and those he is offering for the economy.

"Draw the parallel with the same kind of bold leadership that McCain demonstrated in pushing the surge strategy that allowed us to win in Iraq. Need that same vision, intensity and leadership to attack our economic problems."

The communications strategy is, according to Griffin's accompanying email: "working it's way around the campaign.... Think it can help us focus."

Reached on his cell phone, Griffin said he was in the middle of a conversation and couldn't talk. The McCain campaign did not immediately return requests for comment.

Too bad your preaching to the choir in here. The average "joe(sephine) out there won't read this or any other thoughtful or insightful words about the candidates. Sad to say they will be content with a few jingo-istic, feel-better catch phrases and let it go at that. Granted, everyone is busy but ... the electorate may indeed be generally dumbed down.

All one need refer to is the ghost of Lee Atwater(think Karl rove, Jack Abramoff, Ralph Redd and Co.) and the mission of making the White House and the government permanently controlled by the neocons, their words, not mt asssessment. Add to that, the recently indicted Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) shown at his lodge ,which was remodeled at no personal cost to him) with Phill Gramm, Larry Craig, Kit Bond, and others. These good ole boys have no intention of reviving our economy. In my opinion, they would prefer to eliminate the working poor, dismantle the educational system, and over-burden the middle class. Why can't the average working stiff see through the smoke. They will allow PaCain and his political hack friends to run their lives and livelihoods into the ground just as long as they don't vote for a person of color.

What we need here in America is a complete redistribution of wealth, is that correct?

I've been asked again and again for my response to the now infamous McCain celebrity ad. I actually have three responses. It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign. It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States.
Nuff said!

Aaaahhhhhh, that's what he meant by saying we could be in Iraq for 200 years. He's taking care of our children's future.

By-the-by, don't corporate thugs, lobbyists and special interest reps making up the bulk of McCaine's inner circle?

When a candidate depends on lies and trash talk to distract us from issues, it ticks me off. We American voters deserve better..
It also makes me parse McCain more carefully than I might otherwise do. McCain’s repeated factual errors, constant blunders, lack of knowledge plus his bizarre presentations, sends one question zooming on my radar screen.
Are these signs of, as his campaign reps says, “senior moments” (bad enough), a “breezy personality” -- or signs of a cognitive illness? Comeon, press,do your homework. Get inthere and dig. MCain's not being vetted to be dear old Uncle Mac. He’s being vetted for the presidency of the most powerful nation on earth. The man who will determine our futures and our nation's future. The guy who publicly says “bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” is a rationale, intelligent, cautious candidate?
As for McCain deserving the presidency because he was a military hero – 40 long years ago -- he’s not the only former POW in our nation; he’s just the only one who never lets us forget it. Perhaps he was once a courageous and honorable man. I don’t see that man today.
Sen.McCain? He’s too dumb to be our President. Or just too out of it. Either makes him a very scary choice.
I am a military veteran from a houseful of military heroes. I would rather eat ground glass than vote for Sen.McCain. I ‘m too smart to buy his hubris.

It's ironic that you begin your comment about disgraceful trash talk that distracts from the issues. Then you go directly to trash talking the man and insisting that the press dig as hard as they can to find more trash to talk about.

I remember quite clearly, the Obama campaign accusing McCain's camp of racism to the surprise and chagrin of the entire country. Additionally, there has been no end to the horrible blogs and "news" stories here vilifying and insulting McCain in the most personal ways.

Not sure what you being a veteran or your home packed to the rafters with war heroes has to do with anything but a bit of self examination is probably in order. These guys are both simply politicians and one of them is going to become president. Whichever one that is, will invariably disappoint us. That's just the way it is.

the only problem with this is that Mccain is being anti republican, the montra of republicans is to do big corporations bidding and screw the little guy. Anyone who buys into these lies has not been paying attention for the last 8 years.

I'm watching MSNBC and Andrea Mitchell is on. Why doesn't MSNBC make there commentators state they are for McCain because it's so obvious. Andrea Mitchell is so sad. I watched her allow the McCain supporter go on and on without challenging him much. She would randomly *wink-wink* oppose some things he said but it wasn't enough to stop his running off at the mouth with unchallenged "stupid" talk. I suppose it's going to be like this all week as McCain and his surrogates ramble on.

One could only wish they would all put report the McCain campaign much like the Obama campaign.

Don't blame the media. They don't work for Obama. The real problem is that Obama failed to hit back hard with nasty stuff the same way McCain has been doing. If Obama mentioned about Keating land deal, the media would talk about it the whole week and the voters would be informed. But Obama thinks he is so cute to talk stuff like that. Well, thats why republicans win election after election. Dems never learn.

The media is suppose to provide objective, unbias commentary on the news of the day and other interesting bs.
The current talking heads are a bunch of neocon republicans and can not think for themselves, they have to be spoon fed everything they speak on.

down with the MSM

MSM TOP BRASS is looking out for No. 1, themselves. Remember most of the journalists are in the (their) president's upper income threshold. They are not planning to let loose and join the forgotten middle class until we take back our government. That won't be until November. WE HOPE and PRAY.

Wait a minute.

This is a guy who's economic program is pretty much a rehash of Bush's.

The Bush economic program 8 years later has netted how many lost jobs?

So now, McCain is claiming that he's the Jobs candidate?

Maybe if your'e willing to expect a con job and not a real job.

The McCain camp has been pushing this angle for a while now. McCain was on tv at least a week ago saying we need "an economic surge". The moment I heard him say that I thought, "How pathetic. Good luck with that angle!" Everyday we wake up and see what disastrous effects eight years of Rethuglican (read that today...and had to use it. It's perfect) rule has had on the average Joe. McCain and his "party chiefs" can't get traction on any of these things because even the low-information voter knows that believing McCain's campaign nonsense plays them for fools. I can just imagine the laughter in McCain's "War Room" at his base's expense as they hatch each new campaign plan. Bottom line: McCain and his Rethuglican friends have nothing but disdain for the white, middle class workers they are attempting to reach. To them, they are insects. They only count in the voting both every four years. After that, they can forget about them.

One thing about the Republicans they stay on message. Just finish watching the view, Elizabeth just espoused every Hannity talking point available. Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers and O'Bama can't keep us safe.

Failed to mention: Keating Five, Adultery and Hagee. As usual.

Why would anyone in their right mind watch that video pablum called the view. A bunch of ignorant rich bitches talking nonsense. They should meet in a bar and drink those fancy umbrella drinks while complaining about their welfare checks being late.
