John McCain's recent foray into pop culture commentary has drawn the mockery and scorn of everyone from Paris Hilton to his own mother. But did it work? Tom Daschle think so. He tells the Financial Times the attack ads are responsible for Barack Obama's dip in polls:

Tom Daschle, the former Democratic Senate majority leader, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the Mr Obama's Republican rival John McCain was seeing a "short-term blip" as a result of the advertising, including one that used the image of Charlton Heston as Moses to mock the supposedly messianic Mr Obama as being "The One".

"To a certain extent the ads are having some effect," Mr Daschle said. "But you can't be thrown off your game plan by a momentary dip in polls."

Meanwhile, the Washington Post finds Democratic strategists worried that Obama's response has been too soft:

Such attacks have raised worries among Democratic strategists -- haunted by John F. Kerry's 2004 run and Al Gore's razor-thin loss in 2000 -- that Obama has not responded in kind with a parallel assault on McCain's character. Interviews with nearly a dozen Democratic strategists found those concerns to be widespread, although few wished to be quoted by name while Obama's campaign is demanding unity.

"Democrats are worried," said Tad Devine, a top strategist for Kerry who thinks Obama must stay on the high road. "We've been through two very tough elections at the national level, and it's very easy to lose confidence." ...

"If somebody attacks you, you have to frame the attack: 'This is the same old politics, or better yet, the Bush-Rove politics,' " something Obama has done well, said one Democratic strategist. "At the same time you do that, you have to counterattack. You don't want to look like a whiner. You want to look tough."

The Obama campaign says outside complaints are no reason to change strategy, and one consultant admits that that could be a good thing: "One of the great strengths of the Obama campaign has been to not listen to the D.C. chattering class. They have a plan and they stick to it. But clearly, the D.C. chattering class are all wringing their hands."

It Did?? I just thought it made Mccain look stupid and Paris and Britney exploited. Then we know already how much respect McC has for women. He calls his own wife names.

Marc Ambinder:

"Right now, the type of voter who's paying attention is primed to support J ohn Mc Cain. After the conventions, when younger voters typically tune in -- and by younger here, I mean, under 55 or so -- then O bama's margins will widen because these folks are his folks."

I suppose we're about to see the possible Clinton Effect in state races.

Republicans all over the country are running ads starring HRC, to beat Democrats. I like the Ohio ad, which is sort of a twofer. They're using HRC and the Democratic governor of Ohio to slam Democrats in House races. The governor looks like an idiot.

It should be interesting to see how much credibility she has. Can she hurt Democrats? We're about to find out.

Great that HRC is now the favorite surrogate for McCain.

I'd like to thank the Clintons for showing restraint and class. Maybe they can lose us the House. Again.

Stop suggesting Senator Obama change tactics.

He's run a dynamite campaign over the last year and a half... He's shut down the Clinton machine, weathered the Wright storm and still continues to improve. I'd say he's got it covered.

You're taking what the dummies say on television as truth - the polls are accurate and in some way meaningful, this is a horse race and please don't change the channel or you'll miss something important. Now, a word from our sponsors.

This is a no-brainer. I'm not saying there won't be plenty of people that vote for McCain (we've all heard of Fox "News'" ratings), but finally, there are more of us than there are of them.

Just keep supporting who we all know will be President next year and try to block out the mindless chatter.

Oh, and sit back and enjoy it... Things are going to get fun after the Olympics.

I hope you're right. But I'm also concerned that it doesn't come down to "more of us than of them"....if by "them" you mean Republicans. Because I'm convinced there's more of "them" than of "us", because "them" means under-informed voters who will vote their "emotions" and not out of logic or even knowledge of facts. And, remember, most independents are no longer former democrats, they're republicans (or libertarians) asking for a reason to vote republican. And not all that wise about their choice, either.

"Hold on old soldier", as my mother use to say. We have to have faith. Senator Obama is doing his part (the hard part campaigning every single day) and we have to do our part; have FAITH that our voice/vote will make a difference! Don't let the polls, the msm, the gop or anybody else shake your faith.

The MSM talking heads have been wrong at every turn. Only a fool would respect any predictions they put forth.

And to add greater weight to your point, AnotherMike, not one of his critics predicted that he would be the Democratic nominee. Further, his harshest critics on the left have never actually won any election; they only operate out of fear. They fear a repeat of Bush/Gore and Bush/Kerry. They really need to stop with the kneejerk reactions, relax, and let the man continue to run his nearly flawless campaign.

Mark Blumenthal of Pollster.com looked at the lone USA Today/ Gallup poll that showed Mc Cain with a lead last week, and noticed a problem with the voter sample:

"In turns out that only 10 percent of the likely voter sample consisted of voters between ages 18-29. By contrast, teens and twentysomethings represented somewhere between 16 and 18 percent of the electorate in 2004. And that number is likely to go up rather than down this time around, as youth turnout in the primaries increased by 52 percent as a share of the Democratic electorate."

In other words, the poll used a "likely voter" formula, that will see a huge DECREASE in 18-29 year old in this election, compared to 2004.

Flawed poll.

It's amazing how easily the American voter can be diluded by polls, pundit dialogs, twisted statements, sound bites, and skewed MSM reporting and blogs, no wonder the country is in the state it is. IMO, Sen. O.b.ama has and will continue to ride the tide as he battles the many fronts of attacks aimed at taking him off message as those involved continue to try and usurp this election for their own personal agenda. The way some are reacting you'd think that Mcc has 100% backing from the rep. party and there are no issues regarding his strengths and weaknesses being discussed or challenged within his party. I continue my support of Sen. O.b.ama as he strive to change the mentality of the American voter to focus on issues and the truth of policies rather than gutter politics that continue to bring demise to our democracy. The "state of emergency" our country has been thrust into didn't happen over night nor will it be fixed with a mere election cycle. However, the choice lies in the hands of the voters as to which candidate can and will put us on the right track of recovery. The voter can seek the truth and judge accordingly or believe the hype of polls, labels, and misconstrued information through audio and visual sound bites projected upon us by all of the above.

If anyone still questions whether the "Celebrity ads" were effective against BHO (which they unquestionably were), here's another iceberg looming on the horizon: George Clooney will host a fundraiser in Switzerland in the coming weeks. At a time when all the polls show voters more concerned about domestic and economic issues, what a fodder this will be for McCain and is clumsly group to pound a stake into that one. Its the G8 summit all over again where Bush and his cronies dined on 8 courses while discussing world hunger. I can see the ad now: The Matterhorn is seen thru the window of an eleborate dining room while George and BHO dine on caviar juxtaposed over mortgage meltdown survivors at food banks. Talk about images of BHO being upper class! What fodder!

Do BHO and his "genuises" around him ever take meetings to discuss the visual ramifications of these things? If George Clooney wants to help, tell him to get on a plane and host a fundraiser at a closing Ford plant in Detroit. Impressions are everything.

You are refering to tracking polls. Tracking polls are not something that 'expert' pollsters bank their money on. They focus on comprehensive polls.

The MSM has been accused of giving Mc Nasty a free press pass, which they deny. Yesterday surprisingly they showed a poll on CNN and MSNBC - 46% of people said they are hearing "too much" about O, 26% said "too much" about Mc Cain.

While the MSM fixates on everything from what O eats for breakfast to the brand of energy bars he likes, there is little to no reporting of such trivial nonsense about Mc Cain. Old wrinkly guy continues to ride the "no press express".

All this negative nonsense media reporting is an attempt to minimum and trivialize O. He's to thin, he's arrogant (uppity), he works out to much, he's aloof (stuck up) he's presumptuous (dosen't know his place). I don't know how O fights against this crap but it's starting to stick.

Wrong! WPR Wisconsin poll:

0bama +6 (3 points higher than last WPR poll)

Elway Washington poll:

0bama +12 (6 points higher than last Elway poll)

HOw is this considered losing ground? To a PUMA, 0bama increasing his lead constitutes a loss.
