John McCain's recent foray into pop culture commentary has drawn the mockery and scorn of everyone from Paris Hilton to his own mother. But did it work? Tom Daschle think so. He tells the Financial Times the attack ads are responsible for Barack Obama's dip in polls:

Tom Daschle, the former Democratic Senate majority leader, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the Mr Obama's Republican rival John McCain was seeing a "short-term blip" as a result of the advertising, including one that used the image of Charlton Heston as Moses to mock the supposedly messianic Mr Obama as being "The One".

"To a certain extent the ads are having some effect," Mr Daschle said. "But you can't be thrown off your game plan by a momentary dip in polls."

Meanwhile, the Washington Post finds Democratic strategists worried that Obama's response has been too soft:

Such attacks have raised worries among Democratic strategists -- haunted by John F. Kerry's 2004 run and Al Gore's razor-thin loss in 2000 -- that Obama has not responded in kind with a parallel assault on McCain's character. Interviews with nearly a dozen Democratic strategists found those concerns to be widespread, although few wished to be quoted by name while Obama's campaign is demanding unity.

"Democrats are worried," said Tad Devine, a top strategist for Kerry who thinks Obama must stay on the high road. "We've been through two very tough elections at the national level, and it's very easy to lose confidence." ...

"If somebody attacks you, you have to frame the attack: 'This is the same old politics, or better yet, the Bush-Rove politics,' " something Obama has done well, said one Democratic strategist. "At the same time you do that, you have to counterattack. You don't want to look like a whiner. You want to look tough."

The Obama campaign says outside complaints are no reason to change strategy, and one consultant admits that that could be a good thing: "One of the great strengths of the Obama campaign has been to not listen to the D.C. chattering class. They have a plan and they stick to it. But clearly, the D.C. chattering class are all wringing their hands."

Such a kind of attack can hurt Obama only between people who read all these nonsenses about celebrities. I say WHO CARES? I would never ever read some nonsenses and mostly crap about lives of other people especially not so called celebrities. Seems like some people have nothing else to care about than Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. These people mostly have no clue about politics and their opinion means NOTHING.

Did you see those 50,000 "voters" in SD? Revving their bikes? Cheering a woman as she danced witha hot dog? Those "great Americans" as McExxon called them? Do you think they even know what subtlety, and nuance? These are people who think Batman really exists.

Ah. There's just one little thing of concern there. While it's true complaints are no reason to change strategy, and there's validity to having a plan and sticking with it (because he's always had good plans and good strategy). But one of the appeals of Obama is that he's the anti-Bush - the stubborn little man who sets his mind on one way and stupidly refuses to change course even if there's a boulder smack in front of him.

As long as Obama's got that in his mind at all times, then he should do what he thinks is best, including proceed as usual. But somebody needs to.....be his "GPS". (Don't you just hate clumsy metaphors?) But he does need Axelrod and Kerry and other advisors to guide him through this and firmly redirect him if necessary.

I'd like to see an Obama ad that has all the cons saying hold your nose and vote McCain. Plus some of the other nasty things they have said about him.

OK, let Chuck Todd return some sanity to the process:

To paraphrase what he said yesterday, Everyone is wringing their hands over a 6 point national lead. But if you translate a 6 point lead to electoral college, it's a landslide of about 340 EV. Cliinton beat Dole by 9 points, one of the most lopsided modern day elections. And Kerry was never up by this much in 2004.

That's fine, but he shouldn't coast. Rachel Maddow returned some sanity to the process by suggesting Obama start and continue to AGGRESSIVELY LINK John McCain (Mr vote 93% of the time with GWB) to President George W. Bush. Obama should also AGGRESSIVELY push that this Administration HAS RECENTLY DECIDED to implement his ideas (negotiating with IRAN and North Korea, time horizons, etc...).

You are correct. Checking the electoral map, states that are currently either solid, likely or leaning Obama have 273 electoral votes and this doesn't even include Ohio, Florida or Nevada where Obama has a VERY good chance of winning.

Remember, it only takes 270 electoral votes to win....regardless of the popular vote (just ask Al Gore).

Obama should get rid of any staffer who thinks tracking polls actually need to be followed. There are meningless and only give fodder to the media to give them something to do since they don't want to do any real journalism

These Ads didn't hurt him .... it's he having little to no surrogates to defend him ... that's hurting him ... Where is Biden, Dodd, Richardson all the whole*censored* rest from the Democratic Party ... Mc Cain has all his surrogates bashing Obama 24/7 .... Obama has none ...... not one .......

The Other thing that's hurting him is the Clintons .... every time they open their big mouth ... it hurts Obama ...

Obama has had "surrogates"/props all along. That's the probelm and why he is behind in the polls. The buck stops with him. "Where's the money Jerry McGuire"?

Why do you even post? You are anti Democratic Party, anti Obama...you made your point Hoiles...Now tell me why McCain is good for America. I keep asking all the Obama haters what is it about McCain that makes him good for the country and no one answers the question....it always goes back to "why I hate Obama"...never "why I like McCain".....

Could this be the result of Obama's directive to his supporters to stay positive and not go negative? Perhaps he needs to rescind that. At this juncture, Obama does seem too slow to hit back and also seems to mostly be on the defensive. I'd like to see Obama surrogates put McCain on the defensive for a change and keep him there. Corporate media are intently focused on looking for negatives about Obama and on ignoring any negatives about McCain.

Full disclosure, I think tracking polls themselves are ridiculous, so that may be why I'm fighting this CW.

The whole premise of the tracking poll is this: if a candidate is 5 points ahead in the popular vote, that candidate has to win 270 electoral votes.

I don't even think that math works. I can think of two or three somewhat plausible scenarios where that math doesn't work at all. We know it doesn't work the other way: the candidate does not have to be 5 points ahead in the tracking polls to win 270 electoral votes. We know that.

If you believe in tracking polls, you believe in Paris Hilton Effect. Maybe that's it.

How many times has someone won the popular vote, but lost the electoral vote? That's why you are essentially correct, the aggregate trend line is far less important than most believe. McCain could conceivably pick up a large number of committed voters in large population states like California and New York, but if those are states that he has no chance of winning, who cares. It would be a net zero gain for him. Now, I'm not saying that's what's happening. I'm just saying that is how one has to look at the numbers.

The only trend lines that matter are those at the state level and last I say, Obama was doing well where he has to in order to win--the mid-West. It's all about Michigan, Ohio and, to a lesser degree, Indiana. Don't forget how Obama won the primaries--by targeting states and delegate counts. Same applies here.

I can only say that if that "celebrity ad" hurt him in the polls then there sure are a lot of hypocritical and phony people out there. For the first time, in a long time I was really proud to see Barack Obama being greeted by the rest of the world in such a positive light. It hasn't happened in a long, long time.

Reagan had that teflon so to speak. Those that attacked him, had the burden of making those charges stick.

The public formed a largely positive opinion of Reagan, and dismissed out of hand, that which didn't fit their positive narrative. I think O has that same positivity surrounding him and his wife, and those who try to portray him somehow differently are finding it's a uphill job.

A lesser candidate would have folded after the Rev. Wright story, and the public would have rejected him then, not have him in the lead now. They genuinely like the Obamas and those who attack him with silly charges, only look petty, grasping and desperate.

The Good Reverend!

"Why are they hating on Barack Obama?"

It's my father's favorite joke. Reverend Wright quotes :) He's a good mimic, too.

He is an Obama supporter, and he likes Wright. I think he might MISS Reverend Wright.

He's sort of a non-religious Reverend Wright, and "controversial" in his own small way :)

Right. That's my point, none of this gain real traction accept among those with some sort axe to grind.

Now they are reduced to comparing him to Hilton and Spears, silly assertions, while people are facing foreclosures and fuel bills they can't met.

Unbelievable.

If the American people are dumb enough to fall for this crap AGAIN -- then we deserve what we get with President McCain. And the same people that fall for this junk are the ones who are going to complain when their kids get drafted to fight in Iran or Korea or whichever nation irritates McCain....because "he knows war..." they are the same people who will go broke with McCain's "healthcare plan," they are the same people that will lose their retirement to his "social security reform," they are the same people who will continue to fall into the abyss economically as McCain's buddies in the oil companies corporate America get richer - they are the people that will suffer as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer...but god forbid we have a President who is popular with the youth in this country, god forbid we have a President who can inspire people, god forbid we have an intellectual President who understands complexity, god forbid we have a President who is popular overseas.

The Republicans and McCain have actually succeeded in maing competence and popularity into a bad thing. Like I said, if people fall for this, we deserve what we get.

It is not crap - Hillary has been trying to make the point for a long time that Obama looks good, makes good speeches and makes nice proclamations but have accomplished little. He has been riding high on vauous qualities which have mesmerized a lot of people. Something very dramatic needed to be done to wake people up. These ads from McCain serve as shock treatments to bring people back to reality!!

Conservatives despise competence---because they're not competent at anything except dirty tricks and smears.

They think Raygun's popularity is wonderful---but O's popularity is a negative.

They want it both ways, as usual.

It's the same complex, (and probably the same people), who made up the group of MORONS that teased and bullied anyone who studied and got good marks in a public school. They just cannot stand someone who's smarter than they are. (Hat size # for an IQ with these people.)

No, they'll get drafted to fight Obama's war in Afghanistan. There will be no single payer national health care plan with McCain or Obama. Wall Street loves Obama because he has already indicated that he will "reform" social security --(code for "privatize:). Obama loves NAFTA just as much as McCain. Now he's in favor of off shore drilling. He is the "lesser of two evils" if you still want to play that game.
