John McCain's recent foray into pop culture commentary has drawn the mockery and scorn of everyone from Paris Hilton to his own mother. But did it work? Tom Daschle think so. He tells the Financial Times the attack ads are responsible for Barack Obama's dip in polls:

Tom Daschle, the former Democratic Senate majority leader, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the Mr Obama's Republican rival John McCain was seeing a "short-term blip" as a result of the advertising, including one that used the image of Charlton Heston as Moses to mock the supposedly messianic Mr Obama as being "The One".

"To a certain extent the ads are having some effect," Mr Daschle said. "But you can't be thrown off your game plan by a momentary dip in polls."

Meanwhile, the Washington Post finds Democratic strategists worried that Obama's response has been too soft:

Such attacks have raised worries among Democratic strategists -- haunted by John F. Kerry's 2004 run and Al Gore's razor-thin loss in 2000 -- that Obama has not responded in kind with a parallel assault on McCain's character. Interviews with nearly a dozen Democratic strategists found those concerns to be widespread, although few wished to be quoted by name while Obama's campaign is demanding unity.

"Democrats are worried," said Tad Devine, a top strategist for Kerry who thinks Obama must stay on the high road. "We've been through two very tough elections at the national level, and it's very easy to lose confidence." ...

"If somebody attacks you, you have to frame the attack: 'This is the same old politics, or better yet, the Bush-Rove politics,' " something Obama has done well, said one Democratic strategist. "At the same time you do that, you have to counterattack. You don't want to look like a whiner. You want to look tough."

The Obama campaign says outside complaints are no reason to change strategy, and one consultant admits that that could be a good thing: "One of the great strengths of the Obama campaign has been to not listen to the D.C. chattering class. They have a plan and they stick to it. But clearly, the D.C. chattering class are all wringing their hands."

All right, all you guys who believe in pundits told me this was going to show up in the state polls. That there was some sort of made-up "lag" and the state polls would reflect the Paris Hilton Effect.

Kay isn't seeing it. I saw it one Gallup tracking poll. I have yet to see an indication that this is TRUE.

Senator Barack Obama holds a 44% to 38% lead in Wisconsin over Senator John McCain in the presidential race. Senator Obama leads the race primarily because of a combination of the most important issues on the minds of voters and the impact of President Bush and the voter’s view about the direction of the country. The two issues that voters felt personally were most important to them were the economy and creating jobs (24%), and dealing with the war in Iraq (12%). On these issues Senator Obama had large leads. On the economy, Obama led Senator McCain by a 62% to 20% margin. On dealing with the war in Iraq his lead was 66% to 22%. Another issue that was frequently mentioned was improving education, where Senator Obama’s lead was 73% to 10%.

Prove me wrong. Where is it?

Even O's campaign has said that they expected no bump from the trip.

You didn't answer Kay's question, either.

So what you're saying is Paris obliterated the bump from the trip?

Based on the Gallup tracking poll? Because only the Gallup tracking poll showed a bump from the trip, and that same poll is the justification for this alleged huge Paris Problem.

I think that's a lot to read into a Gallup tracking poll. You CAN of course. I'm not. I think that's silly.

Obama is not panicking and no one else should either. Pls note the conventions where the two will actually be nominated are still to come. In llight of this why is the maverick (Ha ha) not beating the pants of this newcomer, who the McCain camp looks to paint as suspicious and different...............maybe it is mccain's message..........which by the way changes week to week, and has changed drastically from year to year..........I cannot wait until the debates, if the media properly reviews the McCain plan for the public with no opinion given (not going to happen)...he will loose the race all by himself.......how many people realize that McCain is going to make you pay taxes on your company provided insurance, give companies room to drop your coverage, and then say you now have more choices in the open market so go get ya some cheap insurance........Hello, insurance priced are based on risk...employer group insurance is cheaper because they spread risk over thousands of employees...as an individual...the only risk is YOU AND YOUR HEALTH SITUATION, without perfect health record, your premium goes up, and if your health is already bad you either get the super sized premium, or you are denied coverage due to the risk of you actually needing to use the insurance..........get it...McCain’s plan will leave consumers to the mercy of the free markets and the free markets have no mercy just profits...........

I sure hope the Obama Campaign is sitting on a real sweet nugget to drop on McCain later.
This magnanimous approach is not going to cut it.....

Ofcourse they are.

Big time.

Wiped out the Brandenburg Bump in 1 Day.

Manipulating fears and emotions is R's expertise.

Fortunately we have a candidate who has tremendous likeability and his comebacks are just as awesome and effective.

He has gotten the margin back up.

The Tracking polls would catch up with other polls soon enough!

Go Bama!

Are we even taking into account all of the people who just came into voting age? These are kids who have 0 power, have just spent 12+ years in a government institution of learning, affected by No Child Left Behind, their peers who join the military instead of going to college face serious challenges including death. I think it would be very shortsighted to underestimate a voting block that has never had to prove itself before. Young people are very excited about Obama - they don't have the experience with judging people of color like their parents or grandparents, and they are eager to have a president that is open to the world. I was a teenager when Clinton came around, and sure, Ross Perot took a lot of the votes away from Bush1, but there was also a generation of kids that grew up knowing that Bush wasn't the hero the adults wanted him to be.
I really hope Barack gets the "New Generation" bump!

Hit him again. Obviously the ad rang true:

OBAMA EXPOSURE BURNOUT

...By a margin of 76% to 11% respondents in Pew's weekly News Interest Index survey named Obama over McCain as the candidate they have heard the most about in recent days. But the same poll also shows that the Democratic candidate's media dominance may not be working in his favor. Close to half (48%) of Pew's interviewees went on to say that they have been hearing too much about Obama lately. And by a slight, but statistically significant margin - 22% to 16% - people say that recently they have a less rather than more favorable view of the putative Democratic nominee...

...51% of independents shared this opinion, and as many as a third of Democrats thought so too...

"hearing too much about" is most likely code for we're sick of this guy and have made up our minds. Anyone who planned on voting for Obama would be delighted that they're getting 7x24 exposure to the Messiah and that he was crowding McCain out of the news.

Of course, 1/3rd of democrats must be racists for harboring such opinions.

Really? They "went on to say" they had been hearing too much?

Just volunteered that? Come on. They asked them. It's a poll. It was the next question. The question was framed for that response.

You thought they'd say "no"?

What fatuous nonsense.

Ker.ry has been a very good surrogate on the whole.

He learned his lesson in '04.

He has been, and will continue to be, very aggressive as a surrogate.

The fact that he belonged to an eating club in college is immaterial.

Kerry has pretty much been the ONLY Dem leader out there speaking for Barack. I've been saying, Barack's attacks on Mc-I-GET-A-SOCIAL SECURITY-CHECK, are way too soft. He'd better come off that "eloquence" & "tighten-up"!! Frankly, I'm nervous. But, with that said, --- I'm still continuing to volunteer & contribute to the campaign.

It's called the Reagan effect. The big little secret is alot of Dems do not like Obama, either they will vote at all or vote for mcCain. That's what happened with Reagan. The the real debates start, McCain will list all the left proposals Obama wants and he is dead meat. This country is not left but slightly center right, there is where Obama is not and has never been there. That is why a non-charismatic McCain is neck and neck. Remember it is not the charisma , its the issues and Obama is too far left for a majority of the votes. That is why Hillary was the right choice , she was center right on alot of issues,a and the people connected with her-who? Women and women vote...

I was a strong supporter of HRC and had no problems switching allegiance to BO. I think he had a good chance to be an excellent president. But now, let's face it, I sense a problem. He does not seem able to 'close' on this race. I am not going to analyze it, but my feeling is that he will lose this race to another incredibly inferior republican candidate. "Can't happen" you say? Look at Bush. The whole world and many Americans thought the same thing 2X. We cannot afford another 4 or 8 yrs. of this guy and his corrupt and misguided party and policies. This should not come as a surprise. Remember how he lost convincingly in NJ, PA, OH, etc etc at the end of the primaries. This was ignored by the media. It is time to turn back to Hillary. McCain will be a disaster we cannot afford. How can we get HRC back into this spot because she will win by a large margin over JMc. The media will not promote this thought because it is they, like this BLOG (even thhough I love it), who really shaped opinion enoiugh to defeat HRC. But come on now, look how this is unfolding. McCain is going to beat Obama and we will all be scratching our heads just like the last 2 elections when Dufus beat 2 extremely qualified candidates. Let us not allow this to happen again.

Jim,

He does not "seem" to be able to close because people like you pay attention to the polls that are taken in select areas, during the day, from people with land lines (i.e. retired people). I'm pushing 40 & I don't have a land line - just a cell phone & VOIP. How many other Americans are like me? And how many of the support Obama? My bet is the answer to that question is "the VAST majority".

What's up with all these trite expressions like "close the deal"? If the polls show him overexposed, it certainly isn't his fault. After all, he's been running along with the rest of them for over a year now. What do you expect? I personally love to see him anytime and he can be overexposed all he wants, as long as he's elected president of the good old USA!!

Get a grip. The campaign isn't really going to start until after the conventions. The corporate media fires off their little polls and tell you to dance, and what do you do? You dance.

America dodged a bullet when HRC lost. If she was the nominee, McCain would win.

I wish someone could explain how a frivilous ad could be seen as substance and
the substance of John McCain intertwining Cindy as the FIrst Lady and Miss Buffalo Chip
did not tank him permanently. None of the far religious made a comment to my knowledge and none have commented on how it is vehemently unpatriotic.

My right-wing brother, who shows none of the incredible patriotic and intelligent history of our parents, was certain I had made up this appearance and all the seedy aspects and implications. In true neocon form he does not accept YouTube or my "liberal doctored" sources. I spent quite a time trying to find HIS sources making a comment. I had to resort to my own lesson in that which constitutes public smut and defaming our POTUS and constitution.

How can Britney Spears and Paris Hilton be newworthy on the political front and Miss Buffalo Chips candidate Cindy not make a flickr.

ads take hold when there is a grain of truth in them that resonates with the electorate. those of us -- and i'm a lifelong DEM who's never, ever voted for a REP -- who are not yet sold on Obama dislike and distrust the messianic/pop cult aspects that he and his campaign have intentionally been selling.

what on earth does "we are the ones we've been waiting for" mean? the day i heard that i was immediately turned off. i will be electing a president to lead the US in a very dangerous and changing world not a pop-psych icon. the MN speech with all the overblown rhetoric was also unappealing -- the day the oceans stopped rising? come on, please. his logo with the rays of light emanating and the presidential seal with the latin and eagle that looked like a duck are too egomaniacal from a candidate without a lot of experience or accomplishments to back it up.

graduating from law school and being president of the harvard law review are fine and terrific accomplishments if he were applying for a job as a lawyer but even in the field of law he hasn't written a single piece that is highly regarded or even discussed.

why does the obama camapaign continue to go there?

Senator Obama has responded forcefully and with facts. His ads have attacked Mc on his policy platform not on his character.

It's pathetic that some Dem strategists would rather have the campaign fought, not on logic, but on the politics of personal destruction that we have unfortunately been accustomed to seeing over the last few cycles.

I would hope that people would look at the situation of the nation as a whole and at their own lot in life and then ask themselves hw things would be different if we elected leaders based on issues rather than disinformation.

The high road is always the harder journey but it's the right road to take.

These ads are attacking Barack's character. The Rethugs are defining this man, who much of the American public are leary about, anyway. Barack CANNOT allow this to continue. Barack HAS to point out McCain's character flaws, MSM certainly won't. He has to fight with his own ads, not commenting at some town hall, where few voters will hear his rebuttals. McCain's negative ads are helping him get elected. Barack can continue to "take the high road", that all sounds good, but what will "taking the high road" do for Barack in Jan 09', if McCain is the candidate being innaugurated. This is the presidency, he's fighting for, not "first chair" in an orchestra. Dems already know where taking that "high road" has led them in the past.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:20 PM on 08/07/2008

He has to respond with ads showing why people are so enthused about his candidancy and unenthused by McCain. That is the bottom line he can't let them use people liking him as a negative.
