PORTLAND, Ore. — A New York man who pleaded guilty to murder in Oregon in exchange for buckets of fried chicken will get calzones and pizza to go with his life sentence.

Tremayne Durham, 33, of New York City, admitted last month that he fatally shot Adam Calbreath, 39, of Gresham, in June 2006. Durham wanted to sell ice cream and ordered an $18,000 truck from an Oregon company. He later changed his mind, but the company wouldn't provide a refund.

The would-be ice cream man came to Oregon and killed Calbreath, a former employee of the company, while looking for its owner, authorities said.

Durham agreed to plead guilty to murder _ but only if he could get a break from jail food. The judge agreed and granted Durham a feast of KFC chicken, Popeye's chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, carrot cake and ice cream.

After Wednesday's sentencing, Durham was to get the rest of the deal _ calzones, lasagna, pizza and ice cream, his defense attorney confirmed. They will pay the tab.

Durham also got married Wednesday in a civil ceremony at the Portland courthouse. The wedding to Vanessa Davis, 48, also of New York City, was not part of the plea deal that will give Durham a chance for parole after 30 years.

Deputy District Attorney Josh Lamborn said Multnomah County Judge Eric Bergstrom made the right call in allowing the unusual plea agreement because it saved the expense of a trial and possible appeals.

In other words, he switched from a life to a death sentence...

so 3 things.

1) he has food to bargin with in prison 2) what happens if one of these fast food chains goes out of business? one or two will likely do that with in the next 10 years given the state of oil. and 3) fine, he wants to eat that cr*p. See if he still loves it 3 squares a day for 30 years. I predict in about 8 months he won't want to look at that garbage. It will be like a scene from family guy. Peter in prison on day one eating all this food and loving it, then cut to day 256 and he's crying as he's trying to shovel kfc chicken in his mouth, then after he gets it down, throws up.

Very weak judge.

No, very intelligent judge. He reasoned, per more complete articles, that the expense of a trial balanced against the expense of a few meals (not continuing) was a bargain. The guilty plea was a cheap price to pay vs. the price of a trial.

Surely you didn't think the defense attorneys were going to pick up the tab for his junk food meals for life.

TIP: When you see stories about lawsuit settlements (e.g., ., the McDonald's spilled coffee suit), a defendant's probable guilt as declaimed by a prosecutor or law enforcement, or a foolish judge), withhold judgment. Chances are that things are distorted beyond all recognition. Popular Wisdom to the contrary, the played-out process can end up being very wrong but is seldom foolish. (Eventually, the innocence of Richard Jewel and the Ramseys was established. Eventually, the actual McDonald's settlement was drastically reduced -- which may explain why McDonald's coffee is again steaming hot for those who order it black (far hotter than, say, Starbucks or Duncan Donuts.)

This happened in an episode of the Wire. It was a very funny confession in an interrogation room. I don't want to give away too many details, but it happened toward the end of the first season. Please don't spoil it for others.

Great precedent this sets. So now we bribe criminals into talking. In an earlier, more enlightened era, the detectives would have used a rubber hose on him. And he's have sung like a canary after a few whacks.

Only in America indeed. This animal already served time for rape. This bastard should be swinging from the gallows.

So all you have to do to sell ice cream to kids is to buy an ice cream truck? This nutbag was almost socializing with every kid in the neighborhood. http://mespace.wordpress.com
