Obama

Things really have deteriorated between John McCain and the press: even the Wall Street Journal editorial board is turning on him. The famously conservative group publishes a column praising the economic policy of none other than Barack Obama:

The underreported economic news of the week is that Barack Obama favors a stronger dollar. Even better, he thinks a stronger greenback would help to reduce oil prices.

That at least is what the Democratic Presidential candidate told a town hall forum in Parma, Ohio, on Tuesday. "If we had a strengthening of the dollar, that would help" reduce fuel costs, he said, according to a Reuters dispatch ignored by most of the media. ... We don't know who is whispering in Mr. Obama's ear about the dollar, but he's on to a rich political vein.

Read the whole thing.

It is more than just refreshing to find a presidential candidate who is intelligent, candid, hard working, and compassionate. We need this guy, even if just to stop the slide into oblivion that the GOP has us on.

Another disastrous outcome of the collapse of the dollar is the drop in purchasing power of us retirees. The dollar has fallen more than 40% under the GOP, and retirees are forced to make hard choices, unless they are the retired CEO of Exxon. (The interest, on the interest, on the interest, of what he made in just 2005, is more than what most retirees make in annually.)

yep, i have noticed and i applaud o for talking about this. a strong dollar is tied to everything that is needed right now, economically....and somewhat politically (china).

You are so on target. I just don't understand why the MSM is not reporting this. They would rather spend a whole news cycle about John Edwards. We are getting stiffed by high prices on every front and the press is obsessed with the Edwards story. C'mon, people. Let's stick to the issues that are affecting our daily lives and vote accordingly.

Its a curious state of things when BHO was not upset that the price of gas was almost at $5. a gallon, instead he was unhappy that the price rise occurred so rapidly. Exactly what is in his portfolio that demonstrates he knows what to do with the economy? I've read that he wants to tax all home sales starting at 28% for everyone. He says he wants to tax the rich, but then claims he and Michelle are not rich and are "middle class" at their +500k a year income level. If you are able to read the secreted writings of Michele Obama that have been hidden by Princeton (but some freedom fighter released them on the web anyway), she is an avowed Marxist. BHO has campaigned for Marxist candidates with his father in Africa, and by all definitions BHO is politely said a socialist and not a capitalist. BTW, Mr. BHO, I do check my tires everytime I fill up and I'm still paying triple at the pump than what I did a year ago. The Fox Financial News Channel with the WSJ as its standard bearer is a ratings disaster. The WSJ lost all credibility with me when they went to bed with the charming devil named Rupert Murdoch. The better question is, exactly what does Rupert have in mind for BHO if he is elected to take the reigns of the most powerful economy on earth?

I think you ought to remember who's "watch" this has happened on: GWB's.
He and his clone John McCain, rely too heavily on handlers and advisors, because they lack real world experience. Just being a bully and getting your way does not mean you are a successful statesman. Like: When McCain said "I know how to win wars" just what war did he orchestrate or direct? McCain has Phil Gramm who has espoused lobbied for, and ultimately, horrific banking legislation was enacted - at least horrific if you dont make $200K a year or better. Or the over-inflated housing and mortgage markets. Or the Energy Companies crafting favorable legislation from secretive meetings held in the early GWB days. Enron ring any bells or has too much time passed for that to be remembered as a debacle of gargantuan proportion, which is still being paid for to this day. Basically, Republicans have done their best to rid us of any regulatory agency's power to hold anyone accountable for anything.
I see Obama as a better chance at thinking and trying to solve problems "for the greater good" rather than someone who is beholden to huge corporations.

Paying triple at the pump since a year ago? I don't think so. And when you check your tires at the pump every time you fill up, do you actually put air in them if needed? Or do you let it slide if it's 5 PSI under? Just wondering.

You're mistaken about Obama wanting to tax home sales. You're a victim of conservative talking points which as most people know by now are usually called lies.Obama has stated he wants to raise the capital gains tax from 15% to 28%(that's what it used to be) which has no effect on 401 plans or IRA's.If you live in the home you're selling there is no capital gains tax.If you are in business flipping homes then it's a business and you're liable. The worst thing about people regurgitating conservative talking points is they keep doing it even after they've been made aware of the truth. For those that are unaware "conservatives" would like to drop the capital gains tax to 0% so they can live on their investments tax free without working a day in their lives. The average working person will be paying their own taxes and have to make up for old moneybags windfall ,who incidentally will be laying on a man made beach in Dubai.

but what about those who will have to stop building houses because the market is so bad that raising the capital gains tax takes all the profit? i am for o; but, this does worry me. my dad builds houses for a living and i can see how this would really hurt him.

Please check your facts:
The first $250,000 of profit on the sale of the home you live in is free of capital gains. The 28% would apply only to the excess profit.
Michelle's thesis is available on the web somewhere - she's no marxist. She was one of a few non-whites in an extremely high-end, traditional school. She wrote about how out-of-place it made her feel (yeah, I know that's simplistic, but....). I'd feel the same if the positions were reversed.
Obama's father died 26 years ago, in 1982. How could he have campaigned with him?
I wonder what 'Marxist' points you object to. Pure Marxism actually has many good points, although considering human nature, it's not achievable!

The Wall Street Journal is just a Fox News rag. I believe stuff in the National Enquirer more. The only thing the WSJ is good for is using it to train your dog indoors.

A nation without a strong currency can not be a world leader.
Democrats from Wilson to the present have always been for a strong dollar.
It's the Repugs who like a weak dollar to bring down the standard of living of the middle class created in their infinite wisdom by F.D.R. and Harry Truman.

The good news is that he can surround himself with intelligent, experienced people and then he has the good sense to actually LISTEN... followed quickly by understanding, considering and incorporating. Then, wonderfully articulating. What a great combination, heh?

What a concept... We have forgotten what that it is like to have a President with any intelligence -after almost 8 years of shameless blathering. It will be a great thing to witness again.

I work in Europe a lot, so I've really been enjoying the salaries I receive in Euros. I had a contract to work in France for several days at 600 Euros per day, and i didn't give it much thought. But when the money arrived in my bank valued at $900 per day, I was thrilled. However, when I'm in Europe I rarely buy anything, because I always convert the Euro price of goods into dollars in my head to get an idea of what I'd be paying. And, gosh, when you look at it that way, it's expensive there!

So I'm not sure which is better for me--a high Euro relative to the dollar, or a more valuable dollar. Doesn't really matter though--I'm voting for Obama, because it's the right thing to do. This is not the time to vote selfish interests. The country and our liberty are in danger.

there is a bunch of idiotic posts on here obviously from lapel pin conservatives that have no clue how the strength of a currency works!!! It's amazing....anyhew on the whispering whisperer issue...he listens...he listens...George Bush cut of his ears....cheney put ear plugs in his and Mccain has chosen to stick really sharp needles all the way down his even before taking office....you have gotta listen as a president because you are not expert at anything....so you have got to listen to make your decisions....

Don't forget he can articulate as well. I don't know about anybody else. But I find it refreshing he talks to us like adults and you can actually follow his logic. A lost art since we let rednecks run the show the last 8 years.

Finally, a mouth piece of our nation-destroying capitalist class is expressing concern that things are begining to come undone, that events are beginning to overwhelm corrupt policies that mask the decay and decline of American capitalism. Its about time that American leaders show a little patriotism. Failed leadership has brought us to this deplorable disaster. Only courageous and wise leadership may bring us back to a sane economic and financial equilibrium and direction.

I read the WSJ editiorial and this summary is an accurate reflection, although it does whack McCain a bit. Having said that, if anyone is counting on the WSJ editiorial page to be objective about Obama, bueno suerte. The straight news of the WSJ is great, which is why I read it, but the editorial page is beyond hope unless you're Rupert Murdoch's evil twin, Skippy.

Whoever is "whispering" in Obama's ear regarding the economy, rest assured his is listening, something his a-hole opponent does not know how to do. And if he did know how to listen--like an active, concerned leader--he still wouldn't "ya little jerk,"

The really pathetic thing is that the relationship between the value of the $US and the price of oil has to be explained.
