LAS VEGAS — Republican John McCain on Saturday issued a scathing critique of Barack Obama's judgment and readiness to be commander in chief, telling a veterans' group his Democratic rival had tried to "legislate failure" in Iraq and placed his own ambition ahead of military success there.

Addressing the Disabled American Veterans convention here, McCain mocked what he called Obama's varying positions on the Bush administration's decision to send an additional 30,000 troops to Iraq last year. The GOP hopeful supported the so-called "surge" strategy, even as polls showed most voters opposed sending more troops into combat at the time.

Obama spoke out against the original invasion as an Illinois state senator and strongly opposed the subsequent troop increase in the U.S. Senate and on the campaign trail.

Since then, the surge has been credited with helping stabilize Iraq and reduce violence there. Obama has argued that it has not brought about the political reconciliation between rival Sunni and Shia factions needed to create lasting peace in the country.

But in a tacit acknowledgment that his original assessment of the troop increase may have proven incorrect, Obama's campaign removed criticisms of the strategy from its Web site last month.

Narrowly trailing Obama in national and many battleground state polls, McCain, a 71-year old decorated Navy veteran and member of the Senate Armed Services committee, has increasingly tried to portray the 47-year old Obama as lacking the experience and judgment to lead the country in a dangerous world.

Obama, in turn, has criticized McCain for supporting the original Iraq invasion which polls show many voters now consider a mistake. Recently, Obama, who has made Afghanistan a centerpiece of his anti-terrorism strategy, has said the protracted Iraq conflict has drawn needed resources away from Afghanistan where al-Qaida and Taliban forces have shown a resurgence.

"Senator McCain continues to be stubbornly committed to the Bush administration position of an indefinite military presence in Iraq, despite the fact that the Iraqi government is calling for a timeline, despite the fact that the Iraqis are sitting on tens of billions in oil surplus while our economy is struggling at home, despite the impact on our troops and despite the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan," Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan said.

In his speech, McCain said Obama had not only predicted the troop increase would not succeed but had taken steps to ensure its failure, saying Obama had tried to prevent needed funding for it.

"Not content to merely predict failure in Iraq, my opponent tried to legislate failure," McCain said.

Obama voted against one major military appropriations bill in May 2007, but otherwise has voted consistently for funding to support the war.

McCain also renewed his criticism of Obama's call for a timeline to remove troops from Iraq, even as the U.S. and Iraq are near an agreement to pull American combat troops from the country by October 2010.

McCain later told The Associated Press that he believed the agreement being negotiated was not a timeline, as advocated by Obama.

"It will be notional and aspirational dates, but it will be based on conditions, I know that," McCain said. "They will be times that we hope they can be out by. They will be based on conditions on the ground, not according to hard deadlines."

it's a good thing that obama's grandpa, who fought in the battle of the bulge, didn't have the same attitude as harry reid, or barrack, for that matter and say that we can't win, or it's not worth it. barrrack would then have had his wish and we americans WOULD be speaking other languages!!! (german)

remember, germany never attacked US!

Are you arguing that we should have stayed out of WWII in Europe? Because that might just be one of the most inane arguments I've ever heard.

What history book did you get this out of? Hitler was real, the situation with WWII was completely different. Sadam Hussein had not attacked anyone, Bush and company (Cheney, McCain) told lies to the US public and then had Colin Powell tell lies at the UN. How can you compare what happened in WWII to the war in Iraq? With your logic (lack thereof) you are the perfect McCain supporter. However, you better be prepared for the next war. Ready for the draft to return?

And oh, let's not state the obvious IRAQ did not attack us either.

Will someone PLEASE explain what either winning or losing in Iraq means????

World War II was based on a real threat to America and the world, and the enemy was clearly identifiable, contrary to the war in Iraq which was based on lies and manipulation and in which the "enemy" is as obscure as the war itself. While our troops are fighting and dying in the manufactured war in Iraq, a war we can neither win nor lose, we're actually losing the real war in Afghanistan. If you believe that winning in Iraq simply means staying there, perhaps for another 100 years, then I understand why people like you and Senator McCain interpret a responsible withdrawal as losing, but this only suggests that neither you nor Senator McCain have a grip on the reality of this conflict.

one candidate is scary because he is a war monger and the other candidate is scary because he's a crazy radical from the south side of chicago. can we have an option "C"??

I grew up on the south side of Chicago, and never found it to be scary. I grew up in a middle-class community, among working class people who shared the values that are embraced by most Americans. The south side of Chicago is no different than any other part of any other city in our nation. Perhaps its only distinction from some communities in our nation is that it's predominately black. Is this what scares you? Should I have been scared of all of the white presidential candidates I've voted for who resided in predominately white communities? The particular community in which Senator Obama resides is one of the most diverse and progressive communities in the city. Does it alleviate your fear to know that he lives around and socializes with his white neighbors too? Perhaps your option "C" would be unburdening yourself of the racial (AKA: radical) stereotypes that you associate with Senator Obama simply because he chose to live among others who share his experience as blacks in America.

John McCain finds it impossible to believe that the Iraqis want us out of there. They used us to change that nation from a Sunni to a Shiite nation, and now they want us gone. We aren't going to have any more long term control of that oil than we did under Saddam. There won't be democracy. There will be another form of dictatorship. The civil war will resume after we leave until the Shiites are in full control.

Maybe it's simpler than that. I want to look at how many of the 134 lobbyists who are McCain staffers lobbied for companies with a direct financial stake in a continued US presence in Iraq.

While I am positive that we will win every battle I am equally positive that until the Iraqis overlook religious, tribal and regional differences (some thousands of years old) and join hands and demonstrate their want of freedom and democracy, then we have wasted lives, resources and compromised the war on terror. We cannot want it more than they want it for themselves.

Sunnis kill shiites over religious differences. Tribes of the same religion kill each other over land, money and petty arguments. Sunnis kill sunnis, shiites kill shiites. These people hold grudges for centuries. The only thing that all of them have in common is that if, while shooting at each other, an American convoy comes by they will both shoot at us for awhile. How can we expect to create any type of order (or freedom, or democracy, or gov't) when they still settle their differences (even petty ones) with violence? What a colossal waste of human life. Meanwhile, Al Quaida roams and grows in Afghanistan.

Will some one please tell this guy that the Iraqi Gov., the Iraqi people all want us OUT!!! not based on conditions, but on a set timetable... in addition, Shiite leader, Al-Sadr says he will disarm if U.S. leaves , so what the hell are we waiting for?

Seriously, McDontKnow is pushing an agenda against everythign that would enable stability in Iraq. I just don't get it.

Just today, courtesy of the Rocky Mountain News, we confirmed that Barack aka Barry Soetoro Obama was a citizen of Kenya since 1963. Barack has yet to stipulate when he renounced or relinquished that citizenship. That will be a distracting issue in the upcoming campaign. Americans don’t want to elect a Kenyan as President. It is that simple

Let me get this straight...

Old Man McSame, doing the same thing Bush did that failed and failed and failed who has voted
for the war in Iraq at every opportunity despite never seeing a mission statement, feels he
can criticize Barack Obama?

Why?

I think we've had it. We are rapidly deteriorating into a third world country, while the rest of the civilized world marches on, leaving us behind. Just look at the statistics on just about everything. What a bummer.

I really think we have gone past the tipping point and not even Obama can save us from what's coming. The best he can do is perhaps slow it down just a bit, if that, and McCain is just going to stay on the same course.

What I'm saying is that it doesn't much matter who becomes president. It's only going to get worse.

Good luck......

We have a choice MalloMel. We can stay on the same course and have more wars because McCain has said repeatedly, " there will be more wars " OR we can have someone who is going to get Italian on the world and say, " sit the F...! down and lets talk ". You choose.

"We have a choice MalloMel."

No, I don't believe that we do. This thing is bigger than any "we". It took a lot of power to sink this country as low as it is. I don't think that "we" have the power to counteract it, because if "we" did, we would have done it by now. What the hell have we been waiting for? Think about that.

Too many of us are too stupid (and I do mean stupid) to know the truth of why this is happening to us, and they are bringing the rest of us down with them. They are so wrapped up in their own narrow view of things, that the big picture is kicking them in the butt. They're hurting and they have no idea what is causing it, even though it is staring them right in the face. That's what I mean by "stupid".

Again, good luck......

McCain: "Obama Seeks To 'Legislate Failure' In Iraq"

And Bush, his mentor, didn't DECIDERATE the failures of the military in Iraq, in Afghanistan and in the USA?

Ahhh, nuts...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:48 AM on 08/10/2008

The Democrat, and Bama, plan is now, and has been, to legislate failure in Iraq.
There is no doubt.
It's on the record.
Failing that, the plan is to redefine success.
Failing that, the plan is to claim responsibility for success.

This man is just ludicrous. His only words are bomb, bomb, bomb, surges, surge, surge, drill, drill, drill! He does not know how to lead in the 21st century. He is still tied into the Cold War mindset. We can no longer not be a part of global peace.
