LAS VEGAS — Republican John McCain on Saturday issued a scathing critique of Barack Obama's judgment and readiness to be commander in chief, telling a veterans' group his Democratic rival had tried to "legislate failure" in Iraq and placed his own ambition ahead of military success there.

Addressing the Disabled American Veterans convention here, McCain mocked what he called Obama's varying positions on the Bush administration's decision to send an additional 30,000 troops to Iraq last year. The GOP hopeful supported the so-called "surge" strategy, even as polls showed most voters opposed sending more troops into combat at the time.

Obama spoke out against the original invasion as an Illinois state senator and strongly opposed the subsequent troop increase in the U.S. Senate and on the campaign trail.

Since then, the surge has been credited with helping stabilize Iraq and reduce violence there. Obama has argued that it has not brought about the political reconciliation between rival Sunni and Shia factions needed to create lasting peace in the country.

But in a tacit acknowledgment that his original assessment of the troop increase may have proven incorrect, Obama's campaign removed criticisms of the strategy from its Web site last month.

Narrowly trailing Obama in national and many battleground state polls, McCain, a 71-year old decorated Navy veteran and member of the Senate Armed Services committee, has increasingly tried to portray the 47-year old Obama as lacking the experience and judgment to lead the country in a dangerous world.

Obama, in turn, has criticized McCain for supporting the original Iraq invasion which polls show many voters now consider a mistake. Recently, Obama, who has made Afghanistan a centerpiece of his anti-terrorism strategy, has said the protracted Iraq conflict has drawn needed resources away from Afghanistan where al-Qaida and Taliban forces have shown a resurgence.

"Senator McCain continues to be stubbornly committed to the Bush administration position of an indefinite military presence in Iraq, despite the fact that the Iraqi government is calling for a timeline, despite the fact that the Iraqis are sitting on tens of billions in oil surplus while our economy is struggling at home, despite the impact on our troops and despite the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan," Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan said.

Story continues below

In his speech, McCain said Obama had not only predicted the troop increase would not succeed but had taken steps to ensure its failure, saying Obama had tried to prevent needed funding for it.

"Not content to merely predict failure in Iraq, my opponent tried to legislate failure," McCain said.

Obama voted against one major military appropriations bill in May 2007, but otherwise has voted consistently for funding to support the war.

McCain also renewed his criticism of Obama's call for a timeline to remove troops from Iraq, even as the U.S. and Iraq are near an agreement to pull American combat troops from the country by October 2010.

McCain later told The Associated Press that he believed the agreement being negotiated was not a timeline, as advocated by Obama.

"It will be notional and aspirational dates, but it will be based on conditions, I know that," McCain said. "They will be times that we hope they can be out by. They will be based on conditions on the ground, not according to hard deadlines."

And that is simply because Obama has let him! You can never play nice in politics - Not when it's rotten to the core! The sooner Camp Obama realise this, the better it'll be for them.
We can all go on about CHANGE and doing things different in Washington... but you have to get in first and control Washington to CHANGE it! It's a dirty game. And if this keeps up, McCain will maintain the upper hand and will permanently DEFINE Obama, something the latter will find impossible to shake off!
Wake Up Team Obama!

A man who strolls through an open market with a vest, 20+ guards, and 2 helicopters to prove it is safe is clearly delusional. There is an awful truth the republicans are keeping from the American public and that is what they have turned Iraq into. The republicans are heavily invested in stupidity.

Obama couldn't "legislate failure."

Unlike McCain and Bush, Obama knows there is a Congress that does the legislating.

On the Iraq war McCain is on the wrong side of history. It was a mistake and the vast majority of voters want us out. McCain continues lob verbal spit wads at Obama. But Obama is going to do what the voters want AND the Iraqi government wants. End the occupation and bring our troops home.

what polls are you looking at? The ones I have seen show it as pretty close. I swear if someone who had no clue knew who these guys were looked at this website they'd think O was up 20 points. Fact of the matter is it's anyones ball game at this point.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:07 AM on 08/10/2008

You make a good point that the "it's anybodies ball game" mentality because people should realize that there is a lot of work needed to get Obama elected. Truthfully though, the polls do not poll cell phones. Most of my friends in the twenty year old mid card ranger support Obama but are never polled . That means they are missing a key segment of the population. If you add that and consider Obama has the youth vote 4 to 1 with most having, those polls certainly are not accurate nor can they take into account Democrats are outregistering Republicans at a 3 to 1 margin. That means getting out the vote will be all it takes to beat McCain. The polls certainly are not accurate.

McCain is fully committed to the Karl Rove, "take no prisoners" approach to campaigning. Sadly, this could easily be effective in pulling back some of the more sane among the Republicans to the politics of fear. The only good thing is that McCain has no coattails to drag Republicans back into control of Congress. He could find himself setting in the White House and unable to do anything except snarl and sound like the bitter, crazy old man he is because the Democrats own Congress.

Don't need coattails just need to keep pounding the Dems on energy within couple years the public vote repubs back in control of congress. Public wants oil Dems are fully committed to 7 dollar per gallon gasoline, and they are gonna get killed over it.

Exactly. O is playing chess, carefully planning his moves and staying steps ahead of his opponent.

Mc is making a HUGE mistake going negative early: not only will he be virtually out of things to attack O on, he'll be virtually out of money.

On the other end, O is building his war chest, and can take unlimited donations from the American people, which will help O in the long run. O beated the negative campaign machine that Hillary Clinton ran in the primaries, Mc should be no different, and Mc is running a much WORSE campaign than Hillary did.

You are right. You cannot say the surge was a success and then still want the troops in Iraq for 100 more years when everyone including the American people, the Iraqi people, the Iraqi government and even the Boosh administration want to set some kind of time frame whatever you call it for withdrawal.

McBush is the candidate that who is playing politics with the troops since he would rather keep the occupation in Iraq going to win an election rather than to save American lives by setting a timetable for withdrawal.

True and even the banner Bush had flown on the carrier said "Mission Accomplished" so tell me, is Bush a chronic liar or does he have a totally disconnected brain? Ummm, on second thought, that was probably a rhetorical question. Bush is a liar who is completely disconnected from truth. You know he lied about the mission, he allowed someone in his administration to out a clandestine officer of the CIA, and he continues to lie about his trumped up war, he lied about Mission Accomplished and now you and I are paying the bill for HIS deceit. and His and McCain are lying about this stupid war. Our best hope is to get out of there immediately. In Iraq, we are the despots perpetrasted by Bush and his cronies. Elect McCain if you chose, but get ready for 4 more years of economic terrorism, privacy issues and any logical, intelligent leadership of our country. Obama for President!!!!!!!

Great call coach. A great strategist finds out where the opponents weaknesses are before attacking. Even the media is starting to see that McBush's lines of attack are incoherent, do not make sense and are filled with lies.

Should we fight on, until we achieve Victory, and in the Battle for saving the U.S. Constitution, the Restoration of the American Dream, and Continued promotion .and or support of Democracy in AMERICA?

Or, should we cut and run, by electing Mc.Cain, and lose the battle for America?

Some would lose a war for political purposes.

personally i think the angrier he gets the more we see his real personality. did you see how goofy he looked at sturgis? he's either angry or goofy, he smiles after his most serious lines of attack, he's just a complete mess. and is it me or did the NVA shorten his arms? the man looks permanently hunched. i try to take him seriously and just can't for even a full minute. the debates will be fascinating, my only worry that McCainUnable will look so bad he'll get sympathy votes.

short, angry, old, and morally bankrupt vs. tall, calm, young, and honest. I really don't think this election will even be close.

it's funny that he continues the line of Obama's timeline being wrong when "facts on the ground" are overrunning McCain's argument and we'll have an agreement in fact that looks just like Obama's policy. Obama will look positively clairvoyant on Iraq. Which makes me think that BushLeague is in fact stalling the agreement on purpose.

Mc even agreed with the timetable idea, but now it seems, as usual, he has either flip flopped or plain out forgotten he ever supported the timetable... this guy changes his positions more than he and his GOP gangbangers are accusing O of doing.

Yes, the line of reasoning seems to be "the surge worked, so let's stay longer" or "let's declare victory and keep fighting".

Mission Accomplished way back while Bush was on the aircraft carrier. The war has been over for a long time. Now it's an occupation. I wish they would quit calling it a war. Iraq has fallen. Saddam is gone and dead. The war is over. Time to end the occupation.
