Angelina Jolie Endorsement Sought By Both Obama, McCain Campaigns

It may seem as if most entertainment industry figures are aligning with Barack Obama and just a few with John McCain, but there are still a handful of famous names who are still on the fence. And both campaigns are well aware of one star who stands out among the undecideds: Angelina Jolie.

Both campaigns have reached out to her, apparently to court her support. But in a statement to Variety provided by political adviser Trevor Neilson, Jolie says that she is waiting to make up her mind.

While Jolie's recent humanitarian efforts and her suggestion that the US stay behind to clean up the civil mess that we've made in Iraq are to be commended, it sounds to me like she's holding the politicians hostage 'til she gets what she wants. Jolie needs to realize that this is not a magazine that's donating funds to charity for pics of her kids - her endorsement could (sadly) affect the opinions of hundreds of voters (Yes, I meant to say hundreds).

It does seem strange to me that she would even consider McCain, given his mysoginistic & womanizing reputation. What does she think he'll possibly offer to the Iraqis?

Also, if she's so concerned about solving humanitarian crises, she could start focusing on things happening right here in our country. We can't help others in need when our own infrastructure is crumbling and Americans can't even afford to feed their families because of lack of empolyment.

Hmm....I don't mean to criticize someone who I would give my left testicle to have children with (not that I can spare any for the endeavor), but Angelina Jolie's statement that "call(s) on each of the presidential candidates and congressional leaders to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy" before coming off the fence seems, well, naive. If it wasn't for George Bush, John McCain and the Republicans, there wouldn't be a dire need for a 'comprehensive refugee plan' in the first place.

Judging from her own criteria I thought it was a slam dunk.I'm surprised she has to think about it.As far as what she saw as a need in Iraq I can't help but wonder why the Iraqi's aren't spending some of their 79 billion dollar surplus on basic needs.I'm sorry, I know we broke it, but get real,we are sinking in debt and every average household in the US has been sacrificing.Why are the Iraqi's sacrificing when they have the funds to get out of this hole.That last story about Iraq not having anyone that knows how to spend the money was a real laugh.Desperate people know how to spend money,you don't need a degree to address basic needs of the citizenry.I've always sensed Angelina wasn't on an ego trip and is genuinely concerned about the downtrodden,maybe this is her way of making peace with her Dad.

Well my opinion of her wouldn't drop no matter who she chooses as I really don't care what she thinks or who she votes for. My God, some of you people, get a life. She's a two bit celebrity, who really cares what they say or do. Sorry, I don't buy things celebrities say we should have or that they are "seen" having. Now that we are almost 300 posts into this... the answer is simple: GrandyK should be arriving shortly, she'll know who Jolie is voting for. Not only will she know who she is voting for, but she will know about the private meetings Obama and McCain had with Jolie; what gifts they brought for the children and which candidate has been assigned to be which child's "god-father" (only if elected).

My opinion of Jolie would drop like a rock if I believed she were truly undecided. But I don't believe it for a second. She's playing the media so that she gets some press when she finally endorses Obama. Remember that her father wrote an overwrought op-ed last week outlining the reasons that we should all fear Barack Obama. I think Angelina wants to very publicly take the opposing view.

Angelina has never been politically active and I doubt -- given her interest in advocacy on children's issues -- that she would cut of her nose to spite her face -- or more aptly throw out the baby with the bath water -- by endorsing one party, or one candidate, in any race over another.

There's a difference between charitable philanthropy and creating truly equal platforms for everyone to compete in the system. Republicans are big supporters of charity because it makes them feel good to give away a tiny portion of their vast wealth. Liberals believe in making the system fair for everyone to have a humane existence without losing their sense of self-worth. Angelina Jolie, Madonna and many more celebrities are of the former type. They can do much more good by endorsing a political system that creates equal opportunity to all and prevent the vast disparity of wealth that allows for their own indulgent lifestyles, but they choose to fool themselves and millions of others into thinking that they are compassionate by focusing on emotional fixes that are more about satisfying their own bloated egos, while appearing as caring philanthropists to millions of jaded fans.
