LOS ANGELES — Batman was higher than Hollywood's newest pot heads.

"The Dark Knight" took in $26 million to finish as the No. 1 movie for the fourth straight weekend, beating the stoner comedy "Pineapple Express," which opened in second place with $22.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The weekend haul lifted the Warner Bros. Batman sequel to No. 3 on the all-time domestic box-office charts with $441.5 million, behind only "Titanic" ($600.8 million) and the original "Star Wars" ($461 million).

The last movie to remain No. 1 for four consecutive weekends was "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in late 2003 and 2004, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers. That movie did it during a much slower time of year, with nowhere near the competition "The Dark Knight" has faced during Hollywood's busy summer season.

"It's almost unheard of. Summer doesn't usually afford films that much of a wide-open playing field," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers.

"The Dark Knight" should surpass "Star Wars" to become No. 2 on the revenue chart by this coming weekend.

However, the numbers reflect today's higher admission prices, and "The Dark Knight" will not approach "Star Wars" or "Titanic" in terms of actual number of tickets sold. Taking inflation into account, "The Dark Knight" would need to pull in about $900 million to match the number of tickets sold for "Titanic" and about $1.2 billion to equal "Star Wars."

Even so, "The Dark Knight" has far outdone even its studio's expectations. Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., said he would have been happy if the movie simply exceeded the $205 million domestic total of its predecessor, "Batman Begins."

It should top out at $510 million to $520 million, Fellman said.

"It has taken on a life of its own, and in doing so got so much positive press and word of mouth that older audiences who normally don't rush out to see movies or maybe only see two, three movies a year are coming out in large numbers," Fellman said. "It's a question of `We've been reading about this for three, four weeks now. Let's go see what it's all about.'"

Since opening Wednesday, Sony's "Pineapple Express" had taken in $40.5 million. The action comedy stars Seth Rogen as a pot smoker on the run from crooks after he witnesses a murder, with his lovably clueless dealer (James Franco) in tow.

While "Pineapple Express" was unable to dislodge "The Dark Knight," Sony executives were happy with a strong No. 2 finish given the juggernaut the Batman flick has become.

"Quite frankly, it's nice to know that everything else is still kind of doing some business," said Rory Bruer, Sony head of distribution. "We're so very satisfied to be at $40 million-plus after five days. You couldn't ask for more."

The weekend's other wide release, the Warner Bros. sequel "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," opened at No. 4 with $10.8 million, raising its total to $19.7 million since debuting Wednesday.

The movie reunites gal pals America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel and Blake Lively as the foursome whose friendship is reinforced by the worn pair of pants they share.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Dark Knight," $26 million.

2. "Pineapple Express," $22.4 million.

3. "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," $16.1 million.

4. "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," $10.8 million.

5. "Step Brothers," $8.9 million.

6. "Mamma Mia!", $8.1 million.

7. "Journey to the Center of the Earth," $4.9 million.

8. "Hancock," $3.3 million.

9. "Swing Vote," $3.1 million.

10. "WALL-E," $3 million.

Dark Knight REALLY isn't going to stand up well as time goes on. The Adam West Batman movie from 1966 is better repeat watching than ANY of the "dark" Batman movies.

You need to learn the phrase, "Speaking for myself..." The Dark Knight is so much more than just a Batman movie, there are many of us who are going to be watching it, dissecting it, and continually appreciating it for years to come. Adam West's Batman only worked on one level. Apparently, so do you.

I finally saw "Dark Knight" yesterday, it was ok, but I really felt bad for the 4 year old in back of me.
He was quiet and all, but I don't think it was such a great choice to take a kid that age to it.

"Total garbage"? Whatever. With minds that closed, you can't possibly be convinced of any kind of merit. Enjoy life in the 20th Century.

Is it now a requirement that every comedy has a character that dances "the robot" at some point in the film?

All I know is that Death Race is gonna be the movie to knock Dark Knight out of the top spot.

It's all the things that a late summer movie is supposed to be.

It might not have a lot of legs, but should do at least half of the opening weekend that The Matrix Reloaded did.

I'd say Death Race opens with about 45-50 million.

I came back to note that I was very very wrong about this.

It just looked so much like it would draw in the same crowd that 300 did, plus it had cars and Ian McShane.

It looked like a winner, but I was wrong.

Sorry.

Death Race is everything that is wrong with movies these days. The only way it could be worse is if it were directed by Michael Bay

After seeing the previews for death I am left with a profound thought. I hadn't thought it possible for a worse version of death race 2000 to be produced.

This is kind of an empty win because if Pineapple Express would have opened on a Friday, it would be #1. It opened on Wed. and I'm sure it did better than Dark Knight on Wed. and Thurs. This article's omission of the Olympic opening scheduling changes is simply bad journalism. I guess Sony decided to make money rather than win the weekend box office. I recently heard someone suggest Dark Knight should withhold a DVD until it breaks the Box Office record. People should realize that DVD and PPV money has made box office comparisons to even 10 years ago almost completely useless. The market has changed. Studio execs realize this, and one day maybe the media will too.

Wouldn't the Olympics affect both Dark Knight and Pineapple equally? It all boils down to the fact that more people wanted to see Dark Knight, either again or for the first time.

I'd like to think that a good portion of the Dark Knight audience is people of my generation, the ones who grew up with Star Wars. Prior to Star Wars, the big blockbusters of the 70s were Jaws and the Godfather. IMHO, Dark Knight represents a synthesis of the best aspects of Star Wars and the Godfather, an exciting action movie that also has a meaty, character-driven plot.

I haven't even seen Dark Knight or Pineapple Express, so I can't speak about the integrity of the films. I'm just talking about business. Um, yeah it affects both, but certainly not equally. PE is opening and that's why PE's producers opened on Wed. They may have even been hedging their bets by not opening on Friday, and avoid being embarrassed by a straight up 2nd place showing. But Pineapple's 40 million in 4 days would have easily won the weekend box office if it had opened on Friday. I'm not taking anything away from Dark Knight. It is incredible it still won, But the article doesn't take Pineapple's mid-week success into account, which would have been box office victory if it had opened on Friday.

And now that Tropic Thunder is following the same tactic, we could see Dark Knight win again but that's definitely less likely. However, it will be closer than if Tropic were to open on Friday. Weekend Olympics seriously hurt box office and so producers are going with mid-week openings. Overall, I just wish the media could be a bit more nuanced and not simply parrot opening weekend box office figures and equate that with real business analysis.

The thing about inflation doesn't hold water. Star Wars didn't have to compete with DVD's and the home movie experience (At least the original 1977 release didn't).
Titanic didn't have to deal with the online download frenzy and the fact that Dark Knight was available online the day after it was released. For this film to do what it did is nothing beyond history making.

At least audiences are responding to a great, character driven, incredibly well written, directed and acted film...instead of crap like Transformers...

You listening Hollywood?

Way to go DARK KNIGHT

Yeah, but Star Wars open in all of, like, 30 theaters in 1977. Multiply that by over 100 for the number of theaters Dark Knight is playing in.

Except for Ledger's performance, The Dark Knight was a big "meh" to me. I acknowledge that I'm in the minority.

Um, Star Wars opened in 30 theaters, but it didn't play in only 30 theaters. The whole business has changed since then, with movies opening big. Nonetheless, it's still a big accomplishment that Dark Knight has captured the imagination of people like it has.

I'm not big on comic book movies or car chase movies, but "The Dark Knight" was a GREAT movie. The chase scenes were very exciting (and NOT CGI) and the acting was fabulous. I will see it again in the theater.
