Mikhail Saakashvili, the president of Georgia, gave an interview to CNN's Wolf Blitzer today from his country's capital of Tbilisi. President Saakashvili pleaded for the international community to get involved and halt the fighting. Blitzer asked him if he honestly thought Georgia's relatively modest military could compete with a superpower like Russia. The President responded, "Well, I would be crazy to believe that."

It is OBVIOUS that Vlad Putin is using this time of American Election and an idiot in our white house to take advantage and steal ground from Georgia. Russia is flush with cash and America is not.
We are weakened by TheBushRegime and Putin can smell the blood on the water.

He has stopped circling the chum in the water and is going in for the attack.

This is a shameful event and it could well be the start of WWIII. How do you think we will do with a weak Congress and an idiot at the helm? THAT is what we currently have.

I think congressmen should speak out against US involvement in brutal violence. Empire building should expire and inspire being a fair umpire.

The Georgian President should resign or be fired. His troops stupidly fired the first shot and have been playing cat and mouse games with Russia for years.

It seems he thought that because he was helping the U.S. in IRAQ, then that would insure assistance for the U.S. when he made this strategic mistake and began hostilities with Russia.

When will we learn that Diplomacy is superior to aggression.

Wow. Someone who doesn't fall into primal Red Scare mode and looks at the facts.

Careful now, Bush's Gestapo will round you up as a sympathizer - to something. Anything.

The more and more I hear about this conflict, the more I am convinced that the Georgian government must have received some kind of assurances on the part of certain NATO officials -that they would receive military assistance, or even strategic air support, in the event of a Russian intervention.
What other explanation could there be? Saakashvili sure doesn't look like an idiot-he obviously knew that Russia was massing armor and troops on the border with South Ossetia as his government was preparing the offensive.
Could this have started as a probing exercise by NATO, to test Russian resolve? If so, the Georgians were the guinea pigs, and the ferocity of the Russian response should indicate that NATO and the West will not be permitted to cross any more red lines.

This conflict must be understood for what it is: A deliberate military attack by Putin's re-Sovietized Russia on a former Soviet republic, punishing it for asserting its desire to be free of Russian influence. As for the Wolf Blitzer interview of Saakashvili, we're able to witness once again Blitzer's need to interrupt incessantly whoever he is interviewing to ask microscopic factual questions. For God's sake, this is the elected chief of state of a sovereign democratic nation which is being bombed by a former imperial occupier. He should have been allowed to complete a sentence...

I guess you misse the part where Georgia went in to Russia first.

They awoke the imperial beast, and expected nothing to come of it? Give me a break.

The US pushed for this to help in the elections, and they are leaving Georgia as a lamb to the slaughter.

If the US wants World War III, all they have to do is get involved. All of Asia will be at war soon if they do.

Maybe that's what Bush and Neo-con,, Inc. really want?

Georgia did not go "into Russia first." The Georgian government sent troops into a province of Georgia in which Russia has been encouraging and funding separatist forces. It was defending its own territory. The Russian invasion of Georgian territory was and is illegal under international law. Russian conduct in this case is indefensible.
